While 1 (Jessica) doesn't sound like a guaranteed asset intellectually (she probably dropped out of high school because of the aforementioned pregnancy, not because she was doing too poorly) and her vegetarianism could be a setback initially, I believe that for the good of her child she'd eat whatever she had to in order to survive, and though I really hate to list this as her biggest asset, she's young and fertile.
While I almost didn't pick 2 because of his hatred for immigrants, I figured it's an acceptable risk. We don't know that any of the members of the group ARE immigrants, and though he'd likely butt heads with 3, 2's skills as a carpenter should prove useful when it comes to constructing shelters and other such things.
3 (Omar) was picked solely because of his being a medical student. Militancy would almost definitely cause some issues with the group, but between him and 4 (who was the other person I was not sure about) I figure he has far more to offer.
As mentioned before, 4 was excluded for the horrible reason that he is a homosexual. If we're focusing on repopulating, he serves no purpose, and I don't think his skills as an architect make him necessary.
As I mentioned, 5 (Vivian) was a bit iffy. While it could be argued she could culturally be an asset the immediate concern is the continuation of the human race, all else is secondary. The big deal-breaker is the cocaine addiction- withdrawal is sometimes fatal, and there would be little to no tools available to deal with it. Even if she could withstand said withdrawal, she'd be horribly weakened and a liability to the group as a whole.
6 was a tough choice, and was almost ruled out because of ovarian cancer. While putting her in this group almost certainly dooms her to a horrible, painful death, and while she will be (if she isn't already) infertile at some point in the near future, and while any children she has will have a likelihood of also having cancer, she has so many things in her favor that I ended up picking her. Having a bio-chemist is an unquestionably valuable asset and would round out the knowledge base of the group very nicely. She might be very useful in terms of determining which places would be safe to settle once the outside world becomes survivable again, and this is an experimental facility, with her and 2 the chances of being able to utilize any equipment therein are at their highest.
While 7 sounds like he would be a delightful addition, he was left out in favor of 6.
8 was picked on the basis that he (?) is a healthy, strong, most likely young individual. He (or she?) brings nothing else to the table, but strength alone is enough.
9 (Janice) was selected because of the unfortunate reason that the group needs another female. I really, really hate that there's no better reason for including her.
There was no question about excluding 10. The gun makes her an utter liability, and while her discipline and training as a police officer could come in handy, her gun would make her the only real power in the group, even if she didn't have very many bullets. If provoked, Leslie could potentially kill every other member of the group without so much as breaking a sweat, and I don't think that's an acceptable risk.
As a side note, this thread made me think of a Kurt Vonnegut novel, Galapagos.
