DC turned down Morrison - Frank Quietly's AC1000 story because it conflicted with Johns' Watchmen sequel aka Doomsday Clock?! If this is true, then I don't think I'll ever forgive Geoff Johns and DC.

If this is true then I am extremely dissapointed.....Morrison and Quitely are 2 creators who had all the reason to be included in the book.

I think that is Bleeding Cool bullshit.

First of all, DC never added Morrison and Quitely in the AC 1000 line up, IGN did! I would be surpirced if it was an IGN mistake that took off.

Second of all, Kyle Pinion an editor at ComicsBeat "supposedly heard", that the Morrison story ACTUALLY ties to a major plot point in Doomsday Clock. So considering DC's delays due to Gary Frank, I completely understand why DC COMICS wouldn't want to SPOIL their biggest book in the stands.

Finally, IF that story actually exists, and again, unlikely, we will probably see it in the future, DC wouldn't let a Morrison/Quitely story go to waste. If we are lucky we will see it in the Action Comics 1000 deluxe edition.

Matt Fraction was apparently in line to write a new "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" title, but plans fell through

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2018/04/20/matt-fraction-not-jimmy-olsen-dc/

I wouldn't be surprised if this rumor was a red herring to see who leaks stuff to Bleeding Cool. Because it really sounds out there, that Matt Fraction would come to DC for the first time, to do Jimmy Olsen....

If it is actually true, shame, a Jimmy title would be a treat, Nick Spencer's One-shot from years back is the last good spotlight on the character.

Son of Superman because it was a strong opening salvo and Superman 45, because feels. Bizarroverse was close, but the bizarro-speak made it a chore at times.

@squalleon: Great to see you posting again Squall, been a while! I'm mostly in line with what you're saying but regarding Bendis, I don't think the flack he's getting is unjustified. His Action 1K story was unfocused, sloppy and relied too heavily on the last page shocker where all the other stories celebrated Superman for who he is. Plus the villain brings nothing new to the table even amongst variations on other Superman villains. That said, I'm going to do an overview post for Superman Rebirth in the vein of your one since it was so good.

Hey man :D

But WAS Bendis behind the idea to have his story be a teaser? And is it completely unjustified? I mean what better way to get a valuable boost in the Superman titles, than having a teaser in the comic that sold 500.000 copies :P

That being said, Rogol Zarr doesn't seem like anything interesting (yet), but Bendis talked about his Action Comics villain in Google talks who seems amazingly fitting for Superman. Think him/her like Luthor's "Clark Kent", If Lex is bombastic like Superman, then this villain is all about going under the radar, getting the job done and being incognito, I think at least AC will be good stuff.

I am eagerly waiting for your post man :D What was your favorite from AC 1000?

@squalleon: That's an excellent review of the rebirth Superman titles. Regarding Jurgens, DC should make him the editor of the super titles in my opinion. If Jurgens is made the editor, the fans like me who are upset over Bendis' taking over of the franchise would not be as worried as they are now. Someone needs to be there to control Bendis and I can't think of anyone better suited for the job than Jurgens. Jurgens loves the character and has tons of experience writing Superman, he sure won't let Bendis do anything crappy.

Also, you should catch up with Super Sons as soon as possible my friend, it is pure gold.

Yeah, I would be interested to see Jurgens in an editorial position.

I don't think Bendis' needs controlling. I think he gets too much flack for his recent marvel work but his recent Marvel work suffers from the same effects every marvel work suffers from, rushed stories, last minute changes, quick unorganic diversity stunts, corporate synergy. The problem comes from Marvel's management, not Bendis. And since both DC and Marvel have writers sign non-disclosure agreements so they can't badmouth the company, Bendis can't defend himself or any writer for that matter.

I would parallel Bendis with Peter Jackson, they are definitely capable from greatness, but the enviroment has to be healthy, or your lord of the rings can turn into a Hobbit :P

I think Bendis leaving marvel shows even he couldn't handle the toxic Disney management.

Superman didn't need saving; a rebuttal by IGN to the recent NYT article.

http://m.ign.com/articles/2018/04/20/superman-didnt-need-saving-before-bendis-came-to-dc-ive-got-issues

Yeah, that was a tasteless title, but one DC inadvertently created, that is what happens when you constantly put down your characters to promote other characters or titles.

Since the rebirth era is at an end and since I haven't been in here for a while, I thought of giving my thoughts on it in a single swoop.

There is definitely stuff to like in the last couple of years and personally as a fan, I want to talk more about Superman, since Gleason and Tomasi delieved very good character driven stories.

Superman was consistently the best title of the family, a true tentpole. The first twelve issues were one of the most entertaining moments in modern Superman history, with the introduction of Jon as Superboy, the creation of Super-sons and true heartfelt moments. While I don't think anything innovative happened here, or anything risky (as risky as a main in-continuity title can be), the title has much to offer. Thanks to them, Superboy, a blank state character, has a clear personality and is absolutely lovable, the family dynamic was clear, interesting and a nice change of pace, considering the retreading of the New 52, the cast grew exponentially (and I will go to strike if DC doesn't give us a Young Justice title featuring the Gleason created kid characters), and villians returned with revised origins, modern looks and better than ever. Although you can see the team struggled with the twice monthly schedule, especially with the inconsistent art, fill-in arcs and sometimes anticlimactic endings but there wasn't even one story from the main team, I didn't enjoy, even Multiversity and Imperius Lex, which were definitely cut short were very entertaining, there was always stuff to love.

The title was never afraid to go really dark when needed or incredibly light. But the greatest thing in those two years, was the return of high-concept sci-fi, trips to other dimensions, dying planets, alien towns without every losing heart, truly the best of the Silver Age in modern context. Every decision mattered, everything was tied to evolve the characters and coming full circle.

I think this run is great if you want to get a good sense of how to write in-continuity Superman stories.

Action Comics was good too, but you can tell it stalled until Reborn and while it gained traction after that it never achieved greatness. The title was mostly plagued by editorial interference, Jurgens' had to close plot threads from previous writers most of the time and return Superman to the status quo. He really was handed the small end of the stick....again.

I think it is time for him to pass the torch, he really has given a lot to the character, and that is undeniable, thanks to him and the 90s crew, the Superman rogues gallery and the Superman supporting cast has been richer than ever. A big salute to this LEGEND of Superman history but it is time to say goodbye!

New Superman and Super-sons were also great. But I am not completely up to date with either of them. Yang is certainly a good writer, who unfortunately got involved writing Superman in the wrong era. He could do wonders with a classic Superman. And I am excited for his DC Zoom Superman smashes the Klan.

@squalleon: Welcome back, good to see you again. :)

Hey man :D

My Action Comics #1000 thoughts:

The general impression is positive but there were some problems. Some stories really didn't deserve to be there. The Curt Swan story for example wasn't good, re-editing the art doesn't make a story, if the wanted to pay tribute to Swan a classic Pin-up would be better or even an essay. The Levitz/Adams story (which was featured in the digital version) was boring with nothing to add. Pretty much a story to explain the iconic pose that Adams created in the cover of SUPERMAN # 233, (not even action comics). The Simonson/Ordway story was just okay, at least Ordway is a treat to the eye (again a pin-up would do).

Too many nostalgic stories, since Jurgens and Tomasi were both writing nostalgia trips in full length, we didn't need another by Dini.

King's, Johns' and Snyder's stories were phenomenal. Johns' really showed a very interesting introspection here, I wonder if Watchmen 2 forced him to look inside as a writer. Meltzer's was a good thriller, with amazing art.

I didn't have a problem with Bendis' story being a teaser, easpecially after all these nostalgia trips. And Bendis' voice for Superman was good really. Especially the moment Superman tries to stop himself from hitting the shoppers.

My favorites were:

  • King
  • Tomasi
  • johns
  • Meltzer
  • Snyder

All in all a good anthology. One that I will read again and again in the future.

Damn a 1000 issues. What a landmark, nothing will ever feel so important for a while. The next landmark that will trully mater will be the 100 years of Superman :D

PS. Been a while, Heeeeeelo everyone!
