Favorite Green Lanterns

A list of some of my favorite GLs (ranked in approximate order).

List items

  • The Green Lantern when I first started collecting comics, Kyle is probably the most relatable of all the Lanterns. Also, I like that he has a lighthearted attitude, but gets serious when seriousness is needed (not unlike Spidey). Also, Kyle has the most imaginative constructs.

  • When I first started reading Green Lantern comics, John Stewart had a very minor role in most of those comics where his personality was not showcased very well. After watching the Justice League cartoon series and reading more recent comics though, I started to really enjoy his character. I love his marine-attitude that he brings to the GL Corps, and I also love the intricate constructs that he creates due to his background in architecture. I also love the tragic background that he has due to the mistakes he made previously as a Lantern (i.e. accidentally causing the destruction of a planet).

  • Mogo doesn't socialize much... but he's an awesome member of the Corps.

  • Kilowog is one of the most likeable drill sergeants in fiction. He clearly cares for his fellow poozers and will do anything to make sure they go into the field prepared, and will remain loyal to his fellow Lanterns no matter what.

  • Depending on how he's written, I sometimes really like Guy, and other times I just find him annoying. He's always a little bit of a jerk, that's just part of his character. But when he is written well, that's just one part of his character. He is also a loyal friend and teammate (that also happens to love practical jokes and bending the rules here and there).

  • Though not a part of the Green Lantern Corps, Alan was the Golden Age Green Lantern who protected Gotham City when he chanced upon a magic ring, the only weakness of which was wooden objects. I always liked him in the role of mentor to Kyle Rayner. The two made for an interesting and entertaining team.

  • I like Hal, but I just don't like him as much as a lot of other people seem to. When he's written well, he's an interesting character, but, in my opinion, he's just not as interesting as any of the other Lanterns from Earth (with the possible exception of Simon Baz, which I only say as I haven't had the chance to read anything that character has been in yet).

  • Though she was a GL for only a short period of time, her powers are very similar to that of GLs, and she is very much connected with the Green Lanterns, having served with Kyle Rayner on many occasions and her father being Alan Scott. I always liked her as both a partner (in the sense that GLs often work in pairs) and as a love interest for Kyle. Their personalities meshed well, and it created for some interesting stories, as well as some snappy dialogue (as penned by Judd Winick) as I recall.

  • I love villains like Magneto and Sinestro who do the evil that they do with the best of intentions. Sinestro was once known as the greatest Green Lantern and was friends with Abin Sur, and then became a mentor and friend to Hal Jordan. Then Sinestro went rogue... I love his relationship with Hal. That's definitely one of the most interesting aspects of current GL comics.

  • The Guardian, who also at one point appointed himself as the Green Lantern of Oa (during one the Blackest Night I think?). Ganthet has always been the most interesting of the Guardians.

  • My favorite of the new characters that came out of Geoff Johns' revamp of the franchise, Soranik Natu is a very interesting character in that she comes from the Sinestro's world, where Green Lantern is a bad name. She is fiercely independent and a highly skilled surgeon, who also happens to be one heck of a Lantern.

  • I've always liked her spunky and upbeat attitude. I also think she's a better love interest for Hal than Carol is.

  • He is the star of one my favorite Green Lantern stories, "The Blackest Night" by Alan Moore. It basically explains why Abin Sur was flying a spaceship instead of using his ring to fly when he crashed on Earth. That story also added some interesting elements to his character. Namely he became a bit of a paranoid investigator of prophecies told to him by alien prisoners. These prophecies later influenced much of Geoff Johns' GL run. Whenever he shows up in a story, it always makes it that much more interesting.

  • I like this GL simply because he only uses his ring as a last resort. Since he's basically a living rock, he can afford to do that.

  • Though never actually a GL, Appa Ali Apsa was the second most interesting Guardian to read about. In one of the storylines featuring Hal that I collected, he went mad and it was up to Hal, Guy, and John to stop him.

  • Being both a Daxamite and a GL, this guy is tough, not to mention pretty cool.

  • Salaak is a stickler for the rules. This makes him a great annoyance to many of the GL characters. But he is also loyal to the GLs to a fault, and he will stand up to the Guardians if he sees an absolute necessity to do so. He is a great foil for the Lanterns (especially the Earth Lanterns), but he is also a great ally to them.

  • A great choice for Mogo's partner.

  • I loved the relationship that developed between Kol and Sarn. It was great buddy-cop-type subplot in an already great Green Lantern Corps series.

  • Who doesn't love the idea of a talking squirrel wielding the most powerful weapon in the universe?

  • I used to love this character as a kid. Now, when I go back and read my old GL comics, I find him a little annoying. But I'm putting him here regardless since I did really liked his character as a kid.
