As an enormous Superman fan, I had to reply to this post. I'm glad someone out there feels the same way I do about the Silver Age stories. There seemed to be a greater emphasis on philosophical ideas during that era, instead of long, drawn out arcs that never seem to go anywhere (which all comics have now adopted), and just feature loads of mindless action. There was a recent post on the Superman boards about the difficulty of writing for the character, but I can't remember the last time a modern writer took a situation based approach with the character, rather than simply coming up with more powerful/interesting villains. Superman is supposed to be powerful...what makes the character interesting, is what he does with it.

Also, there can never be enough said about Curt Swan's art.

Ok, I've been a faithful DC reader my entire life (Superman, Batman, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol), so I feel I'm entitled to my throw my two cents in.

Does anyone else feel that endless (and needless) revamp/reboots betray us as fans and dillute the characters? Take Superman, for example..how many freakin' origin retoolings does he require? Why not just have Grant Morrison take over Action Comics for a year to do what he wishes within the existing continuity? Why does everything have to be altered with new #1s? What ever happened to respecting a character's well established history?

DC should display Action Comics #900 as a badge of honor...it's an accomplishment no other comic company can claim, and only demonstrates the iconic status of their flagship hero. NO REVAMPING REQUIRED!!!!

I feel like DC is attempting an enormous money grab, which I understand, being a business man myself. However, I would feel much better if they simple started an Ultimate line, like Marvel did, if they insist on tweaking character backgrounds.

I was just re-reading crisis and followed it up with the post crisis Legends mini series. How does Wally West have any knowledge of the events of crisis when the universe was supposedly rebooted? He mentions fighting the anti-monitor, but that doesn't make any sense. Does anybody have an explanation?

This production is already in trouble, and I put no hope in the delivery of a great Superman movie. The fundamental problem is that Warner Brothers (and Hollywood for that matter) is too afraid to make a Superman movie that's true to the character's essence. Superman's ideals, and what he stands for, are viewed as outdated by filmakers, which subsequently muddles any development efforts for new movies. They can't seem to make up their mind on how to approach the character, and what you're going to be left with is a confused and unfocused final product (just like "Superman Returns"). From what I've read so far, I'm not optimistic they're on the right track....

What a new  Superman movie requires is a director with conviction and guts, that will deliver a movie with the iconic Superman, and that isn't afraid to portray a character with ideals (however outdated they may appear). You also need a director that can work with actors to develop a human story, and not just MTV-esque action sequences. This is the second time in a decade Warner Brothers has picked the wrong director for a Superman project.

All of the artists are great, but I'm really glad someone mentioned Curt Swan:

This is interesting news. I though they were aiming for a complete re-boot of the franchise, but it actually sounds like this movie will be even closer to the Christopher Reeve films than "Superman Returns."  The way Nolan spoke about it, I envisioned a Golden Age-esque Superman movie, with a more grounded feel, like the original background of the character (in the 30's).

The powers that be at Warner Brothers must be too afraid to deviate from the vision of the original films, since they nailed it so well (particularly Donner's).

We'll have to wait and see. They should entertain the idea of another villain though. You'll never beat Terrance Stamp-unless he's coming back to play Zod?

Agreed.  They never quite cultivated that perspective on that Supergirl's character. I myself love the pre-crisis/post-crisis battle element of the story, and how Superman has demonstrated real limitations in his powers and mental stability....

The story concluded in Superman #22. It's the best (and most dramatic) part, being the final act. It's one of my all time favorite Superman tales, Post-Crisis or Pre-Crisis.

I like the Grant Morrison explanation. It's not the Metropolis Clark that's real, and it's not Superman. It's the Clark Kent from Smallville that's the true individual. That's the person who preceded both identities...

This is more along the lines of what I was thinking of. I should have clarified that I didn't quite mean the Silver Age plot devices (Krypto, Kandor, weird one-time powers) as I did Superman's power level. The immensely powerful Superman is the one the I first started reading about (though I love John Byrne's take as well), so that's still my favorite version. In fact, the first story I read when I was a kid was a two part tale where Superman fights the Planeteer....a great Curt Swan piece with cool Gil Kane covers.

As for the other Kryptonians, I'm kind of torn; on the one hand, having Phantom Zoners and the like dillutes Superman's uniqueness. On the other hand, I really love General Zod and crew.
