Bucky Barnes as Captain America
Bucky Barnes as Captain America

Change is a necessary part of the medium. Stories get tired, characters get stale. Sometimes, it's good to have such a change. I was personally quite horrified when Marvel killed off Captain America a while back yet I have to admit that Bucky Barnes struggling to fit himself into the role was a much more interesting book.

Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Sometimes I hate the direction that the book is taking, but usually things revert back. Like when Spider-Man changed his outfit in the Secret Wars to all black. I think a lot of people were taken aback at the shucking of the red and blue suit, but the black suit or the design lasted quite a while and has even made some resurgences here and there.

That being said, I have noticed that Marvel tends to be open to experimenting than DC which seems to be a bit more traditional. Of course, when DC changes things--they really change things like their recent revision of their entire line of comics. I'm not that big a fan of some of those changes--some of the new costumes look kinda stupid in my opinion.

@Brazen_Intellect:That's the thing, for some reason, the old Red 'n Gold Armor that he spent something like 200 or so issues in often got upgrades or things of that nature. Yet somehow his armor seem to be now incapable of that unless he builds a new one.

I also question Marvel's numbering system for his Armors. From what I've seen, they simply number each armor by it's appearance chronologically in the comics. It doesn't matter if this is a specialized suit like his Space Armor, Stealth Armor, or Deep Submergence Armor--it goes in the list.

This idea has recently just occurred to me after looking at several pictures of what they say is going to be Tony Stark's newest Iron Man suit. I have to say that it is a dramatic change with the black and gold coloration, but has Marvel taken to changing the Iron Man Armors too much?

I mean, Tony has always been changing armors on a fairly regular basis; but it seems to me that Marvel has really started pumping out more and more alterations to his armors in the past few years. Before, it used to be a major event when Tony adopted a new armor--and they lasted for quite a while--now it's starting to be like he changes it in for a new year's model after only a few issues. Or is it just me?

Don't get me wrong, I have liked a lot of the armors--particularly the Extremis design looked so realistic and mechanically neat, but I'm starting to get a bit jaded at how Marvel keeps changing Iron Man's look on me.

Considering the recent string of resurrections, I think that the comic companies should simply take the whole revolving door of death easy for crying out loud! Death used to be a fairly serious matter but now it's like done for the temporary boost of comic book sales.

I mean even the old Bucky and Jason Todd's deaths--characters whom I believed that Marvel and DC would NEVER bring back, ultimately lacked permanence and they're back in the saddle and it's annoying me.

Before too long you realize, they're going to have to do stuff like ...

Bring Back Uncle Ben!
Bring Back Uncle Ben!

Or something else to totally invalidate some of these comic book characters. What made Captain America great was the fact that he never forgot Bucky, he mourned him for years. Same thing with Batman. He lost Jason Todd. He lost Robin. Those were some major and pivotal moments in their history. They were real characters who had lost someone important to them. But they didn't quit, they didn't hang up their shield or cowl, but soldiered on. Now it's like ... what's the point?

They should stop these resurrections and let these characters stay dead and buried.

People just seem to like the Marvel characters more. And they're advertised alot more than DC's.

I have to say that I disagree. I think that DC has the advantage of image recognition. I mean, everybody knows who Superman is. Everybody knows who Batman and Wonder Woman. Their superheroes are practically iconic.

Marvel's most recognizable icon is Spider-Man, but I think the rest of the Marvel-verse characters just don't have that sort of immediate recognition that they do. I mean, sure more people probably know who Iron Man and the Hulk are now, but they're not the kind of instant-everybody knows 'em-kind of knowledge.

I will say that I do think that Marvel's characters are more likeable because they're a lot more humanized which may be why they're more successful in films.

Lockheed

I think Lockheed worked because he was sorta cute and really weird. The X-Men need something that cute and weird to serve as a pet/mascot/whatever. A five inch elephant would be cute, but frankly it doesn't quite fit the definition of weird like a miniature dragon.

Aren't there some mutant animals out there that might fit? I think I read that the New Mutants recently returned to the island where Bird-Brain and the Ani-Mates hang out. Maybe something akin to a failed experiment?

Krakoa might be more like a mascot than a pet... perhaps a landscape?
