DC are idiots. Thats the only reasoning I can come up with.
I mean in universe the name makes sense. I re-read those back up stories in Justice League recently and I realized something... They didn't make Billy Shazam's champion like he normally is, they full on said he IS Shazam now, not just getting powers through him but IS the Wizard now. He's got ALL of the Wizard's power now, not just the powers of the gods. Which is why he's able to actually use magic now, as in use iit for spells, by focusing that power.
I mean really what gets me is not so much the name change, since if they had gone with the usual alternate name of Captain Thunder I'd have been fine. Mostly because Captain Thunder is what he was originally going to be called, but a short lived jungle themed hero with that name(Who fell into obscurity leaving the Captain Thunder name in the Public Domain) from another company stopped that.
What gets me is the IDIOTIC REASONING behind it!
"Oh well everyone thinks his name is Shazam, so he's Shazam now."
Okay.... There's a problem with this. In Justice League Unlimited? He showed up for an episode and was called Captain Marvel. In Batman: The Brave and The Bold he showed up as both a recurring character and had TWO full episodes dedicated to him! One showcasing him as well as Dr. Sivanna, his 2 evil kids, and Black Adam! The second one about the Marvel Family as well as having Mr. Mind and the Monster Society of Evil as the villains!
Then he showed up fairly regularly in Young Justice, again called Captain Marvel, and was even a MAJOR PART of 2 full episodes! One where he's helping the Team, the other where he's a crucial part in stopping Klarion the Witchboy. The point is? By that point people who may have been confused could go
"OH! He SAYS Shazam to turn into Captain Marvel!"
And now this just opens up NEW confusion since it's
"Wait his name is Shazam? I thought he was Captain Marvel."
If they went with Captain Thunder but kept everything about this new take in place? People would be fine with it! They see the similar costume, colors, and Captain in the name and go for it!
