Babs should be Batwoman with Stephanie Brown as her protege Batgirl.  But I look forward to seeing Babs and Dinah in action together as Batgirl and Black Canary.

@JonesDeini: You're absolutely right of course.  The extent to which Magneto would go was far more than what Malcolm would have done.  I think the comparison though is more philosophical in the sense that Magneto, at least from a violent point of view, tried to inspire pride in his own kind, just as Brother Malcolm did for African-Americans.  Of course Malcolm didn't advocate violence whereas Magneto did.  I guess its just all too easy for people to try and then liken the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to the Nation of Islam and that's where the comparisons come.

The comparision is still wrong.  Malcolm X desired to (1) force America to give equal rights to black Americans, and (2) prompt Americans into negotiating with MLK or face a more serious threat in Malcolm X and his people.

Magneto does not seek to bolster Professor X in anyway, nor is he seeking any type of equal rights.  He seeks to create, by force, an entirely new mutant nation.  The degrees of magnitude are so extreme to invalidate the comparison. Magneto agreed to teach at Xavier's during a time he questioned his own path.  He didn't do a good job of it, and it didn't last.  Malcolm X's moral journey actually had a direction, and never strayed from his ultimate goal of freedom and rights for his people.

Cyclops.  He had a difficult class to teach (Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird), and did a superior job.

Professor X had an easier time with the first class.  They were young, and not as willful.
Quite frankly, I don't recall Storm really functioning as a teacher; despite being a leader.
Emma is an awful teacher, and has gotten many of her students killed.  Personally, she is a character i've never accepted as an X-Man; her evil was swept under the rug too easily.
Wolverine is my runner-up, despite his reluctant exterior.

As far as the team name, in Spanish mixed gender groups get the male pronoun and noun.  X-Men sounds less ridiculous than X-Men and Women or X-People.  However, with new teams like X-Factor, it shows they could have chosen a non-gendered name.   As far as women going crazy - you have great examples, but it would have more punch if you did a comparison to whether the guys had as much tendency to go crazy

Good point.  Most of the X-Men guys have turned crazy or bad at one point, too.  Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Angel, Wolverine, Colossus, Mimic, Gambit....

There is just an allure to a hero failing, even if briefly.  Which makes the heroes that avoid it even more heroic by comparison.

It would be nice to see DC update and streamline thier universe.  But we've seen it before.  I'll be cautiously optimistic.

Yes because god knows The X-Men never battled the Hellfire Club...had Havok, Banshee and others as it's members. Founded By Prof. X and pretty much a load of other things.

Wow these movies have nothing to do with the X-Men, who would of thought.

Ahh yes and Thor was so respectful to the Original story they made a joke of the Donald Blake identity.  This post is silly

The X-Men movie uses little more than surface details in it.  Or can you show me the comic, where Havok (Cyclop's older brother), Banshee, Beast, Mystique, and Emma Frost were all active as heroes in the 60's?  Or the comic where Magneto and Xavier recruited and trained a team together? Or the one where the Hellfire Club includes Riptide?  The entire point of many of these recent character reviews for the X-Men: First Class movie is how different from the originals they are...or did I mis-read the article?

Thor is much more respectful to the original story by comparision.  The original Thor story is that Thor is stripped of his powers for being arrogant, and sent to Earth to learn humility.  If you ignore the Stone Men from Saturn and the mortal Executioner, Loki was Thor's first villain.  Loki has always sought to destroy Thor and claim power in Asgard.  The Destroyer armor was always a tool for Odin or Loki or whoever else obtained control.  The Warrior's Three and Sif always appear as Thor's main allies from Asgard.  Jane Foster was always the love interest in early Thor stories.  The Odin-Sleep was a constant issue in Thor.  Yes, they made a in-joke of Don Blake since they couldn't fit it in otherwise.

Except for astrophysicist Jane Foster and clearly extraterrestrial (rather than divine or otherdimensional) asgardians.  Every adaptation makes changes.

First Class, unfortunately, carries the heritage of Singer's continuity.  While it was an interesting take on the mythology, I'm eager for them to reboot (hopefully through / or in conjunction with the Marvel studio).  Although, if Marvel / Disney get's back control of the franchise, they have no incentive to crank out movies every three to five years to keep the rights.  While most of the non-Marvel Studios stuff is crap, I appreciate it keeping the comics in the wider consciousness.

This is why I said respects.  Jane's role in Thor has always been love interest.  She was also always a very intelligent woman; shifting from nurse to astro-physicist is fairly minor.  The Asgardians were extra-dimensional; Earth was clearly described as being inaccessable without a dimensional portal, like Bifrost, several times.

But all of the characters relations were intact, their powers were as expected.  There were no major changes.  Singer's X-Men continuity scrambles ages, relationships, status, histories, and more.
If you are happy watching the film with all of these changes, then you will enjoy it.  I'll probably wait for it to play on HBO.

Each X-Men movie is shifted farther from any resemblence to canon.  This movie will be good if you want to watch characters with nothing in common to the originals except names and powers.

If you want to see a movie that respects the original stories and characters....go see Thor.

Cyclops has unquestionably lost his heart.  He is totally ruthless in team decisions.  He cheated on his wife with Emma Frost (who dispite a noble attempt to whitewash her past actions is someone who had less morals than anyone in the MU except maybe the Red Skull).

He is no longer worthy of being the guardian of Xavier's dream.
