Can we count Ferals as mutants still?

Feral heroes and villain are some of the coolest around. They're like human animals literally. Now when Romulus was around, he revealed that most ferals weren't evolved from apes like humans, rather than wolves (I believe he term was Lupus sapiens). So my question is do we still count them as mutants or can we classify them as their own species?

Well, in the Marvel Universe a confirmed X-Gene is what allows someone to be identified as a mutant.  As long as the ferals have the X-Gene (and I believe they do), they're still in.
I thought the x-gene was found in everyone, the only difference is that its dormant through most people and that's why character like Mr. Sinister are always trying to turn normal people into mutants by activating it?

well they have to be a close genetic link because they can breed with homo sapians, & i'd say most of the ferals are part homo sapain, because i dout there 100% feral. so i'd say there still mutants

@Dakens son:
Well, they could be Splicers. Ya know, people that inject enhanced animal DNA into their system to become more like Ferals. I mean to me, ferals are kinda their own race, but just a specific race of mutants.

Ooh, good point. I think that's up to personal interpretation. Frankly, I don't care what they're called, but they're all super awesome!
