Shortly after Rodger regained consciousness, names were exchanged and all agreed to the mission. They were now a team, a motley crew, dedicated to the single cause of finding these mysterious rings whatever the cost. Already Rodger was feeling excited about the mission, partly for the thrill of the adventure, and partly because he got to work with certified members of the Lantern corp. It was a big step up for him, far above the simple adventures he normally went on, plus this one mission might be the big one making the name ‘Skullken’ a household name. As for working with Shaeyra, it was more of a family reunion, rekindling forgotten dreams, now brought back to life. So with a hardy hi-ho Rodger proclaimed “Then let’s go find those rings!” as he tried to rally the team.
But before they could take flight, a monstrous beast over four hundred feet tall with an ominous yellow glow around it, raised up from the ocean depths. With one mighty roar it let out a yell that crossed the seas with a sound that struck fear in the hearts of mortal men. Immediately, it noticed the three individuals flying around him, that to him were no more than insects, but then it noticed the ring on Skullken’s finger and attacked. With one swing of it’s enormous left hand, he struck outwards trying to knock the heroes out of the sky, but being that Connor and Shaeyra were train fighters, and never showed fear, they immediately jumped into action.
Like fireworks the sky lit up with white and green lights as the Lanterns split up, flying through the air to avoid the strike, while at the same time relocating themselves for their counter attack. As for Rodger, his mind seemed to be elsewhere. At the same moment the sea monster noticed the ring on his finger, he too became obsessed with the energy fueling the monster. Because of this, he left himself wide open for the monsters attack, but just seconds before the deadly collision, Connor saved him at the last second. Before Rodger knew it he was safely surrounded by a green bubble, that quickly removed him from the monsters path. Then once safely out of harms way, Connor released him from the construct so that they could both fight against the sea beast unrestricted.
But the monster was not finished with it’s assault. It still wished to kill it’s intruders and as such it released it’s most deadly attack. From the core of it’s very being it built up a fiery yellow energy that it released from it’s mouth outwards over the battlefield with both a devastating size and range. Unchecked this attack could easily burn a city to ashes in minutes and now it was aimed at the heroes. In quick response Shaeyra placed herself in harms way to protect the team, and met the sea monsters yellow fire with a white beam of energy from her ring. It was like plugging a damn with a cork, but Shaeyra’s life focus was strong enough to hold back the flames long enough to give Connor his chance to attack. Fueled by will alone he created a giant fist just as big as the monster’s face and with one sucker punch hit it hard enough that his and Shaeyra attacks momentarily stopped the beast.
Suddenly a cold chill filled the battlefield as a new player joined the scene. Dressed head to toe in black, it was Oblivion, the feared ‘Black Lantern’, and sworn enemy to Solar Hawk and Avatar. Immediately Shaeyra’s ring screamed “A BLACK LANTERN! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!” as Connor thought to himself “What the f*ck is a Black Lantern doing on Earth? Especially him?!”but neither mattered to him. Filled with his own superiority Oblivion ignored the other lanterns and proceeded to attack the sea monster single handed. By his own creation he summoned forth four dark chains with razor sharp hooks at each end. He then commanded the rings to hook deep into the beast jaw, ripping through it’s flesh and drag it back down to the hell it came from.
However, the beast was not so easily beaten and with one snap of it’s neck, jolted it’s head to the side, swinging the black chains through the air, like a fish snapping a fisherman’s fishing rod. After all this, the only effect the Lanterns had on it was to make it madder. Because of this, the sea beast was now the center of attention, and the Lanterns ceased attacking each other. For now John, Shaeyra and Connor were all contemplating their next move. Whether it be another frontal assault against the beast or just a stall for time. Connor however, was concerned with finding the beast’s energy source, which he now knew was an actual Lantern ring, but unfortunately he was unable to find one. Or at least one in a recognizable area.
But a midst all the chaos going on around him, Rodger remained motionless. Instead of joining the fight with his friends, he and Violet were talking to each other mentally. For some unknown reason he and Violet were aware of the source of the sea beast power and that it came from a ring like ‘V’. In fact in some strange way the beast’s ring was calling to him, just as his ring was calling to its. Because of this link, Rodger was aware that the yellow ring was lodged deep in the beast’s left lung, right next to it’s heart. Against V’s best warnings, Rodger was determined to retrieve the ring at all cost and swooped down towards the beast’s chest. With a quick head’s up to his teammates he shouted “There’s one of those rings inside this thing and I’m going to get it.” Then with a quick altering of his physical form to intangible he passed through the beasts flesh and onwards to the lung. Within seconds he exited through the back, but now with the yellow ring firmly grasped in his left hand.
Suddenly the monster’s form began regressing back to it’s original state. In mere minutes, the once four hundred foot tall creature reverted to a five inch flounder that now floated dead on the top of the ocean’s wave. It was no longer a threat to any one, it was now a snack for the next fish to come along. But as Rodger flew back up to join his comrades, there was something off about him. He still looked the same, with a purple glow around him, but there was still something wrong. Inside he felt a strong connection to his new found ring, so much it was effecting his personality. Upon touching it he immediately shut down parts of Violet, to avoid her from constantly warning him about the negative effects of the ring. But as he rejoined his friends, now concerned with the threat of a Black Lantern, the effect of the yellow ring shined through as he said twelve words the life loving Rodger would never have said before. In reference to the stranger in the air, Rodger raised his left hand still holding the yellow ring tightly, and shouted “I don’t know who he is, but I say we KILL him!”
