I think you're mistaken in assuming that they're trying to get comic fans to go and see these movies in the first place. The studios know that fans of the book are going to go and see the movie, if only to find things to complain about. In the end, they want as wide an audience as possible, so you're not going to find comic book logic (if it can be avoided), Adam-West-y sound effects, or a lack of origin stories in most comic movies, because that's going to turn off a lot of movie-goers.

Avengers, hands down.

I think you're misinterpreting the Avengers' motivation in this series. I don't think it's so much a "You should have consulted us because we're the Avengers and we're always right". I think it has more to do with the fact that Cyclops may have forgotten, since naming himself Grand High Poobah of All Things Mutant, that his actions regarding the Phoenix Force will have consequences for the rest of the world. He's suffering from severe tunnel vision, and his lack of perspective could easily wreak untold destruction upon the universe.

So, while I do understand the X-men's POV, I have to side with the Avengers on this one.

Gwen Stacy is hardly his greatest love. The only reason she's held in such high regard is because she died before she had a chance to find her way off the pedestal he'd placed her on. Had she survived, their relationship would have gotten past the honeymoon stage, and Peter would have found something about her that annoyed him. Maybe she'd fart in her sleep, or she would chew really loudly (and while it wouldn't bother him at first, it wound start to grate after a while), or something equally petty. Perhaps their relationship would have imploded spectacularly before long, anyway, because they wanted different things, or she was screwing Flash, Harry, and Jonah.

Either way, her abrupt death has rendered her sacrosanct.

"By the time we had any idea Earth-2 existed besides a single Flash comic, Wolfman was already destroying it"

If I'm not mistaken, there were a number of occasions where Earth-Two was mentioned by name, and I know for a fact that it's referenced in Scott's first appearance in GL Volume 2. While I will not claim that the idea was totally fleshed out prior to Crisis, I will respectfully suggest that maybe one should avoid being quite so reductionist in the future, even if the statement was nothing more than hyperbole intended to illustrate how little there actually was to the concept.
