Are Mutant Powers Sexist and/or Racist?

With the potentially hopeful outcome of AvX, I am excited to see new mutants emerging all over the world again, and having power unique to themselves.

But before then i would like to point out some things i have noticed as a woman of colour and fan of the X-books.

Like why are most telepaths female. And why is psychic power usually viewed as more feminine. And when male characters are psychic they have telekinesis or are more powerful in their portrayal. There is also the trend to give women defensive powers like force fields, flexibility or intanibility.

Then on the other end why are super-strong characters usually male. And big and covered with muscles. But the few girls with the same power have slight and slender bodies. Or why most physical mutations are given to the male characters to preserve the beauty of women.

I also think there are also several characters with powers that are racially/ethnically inspired. Especially when compared to the diversity and distribution of white characters' powers. It can be a little unsettling. Take for example Frenzy whose name and power implies agressive black woman. Or Collective Man, from China, whose powers come from merging 5 individual brothers into one single man and eliminating their separate identities. Or Dust or Bling!

The X-books already suffer from a lack of representation, and to have these few characters only magnifies the problem that certain people will take issue with. Certain stereotypes or misconception are just perpetuated if there is not enough diversity to counteract bad impressions. I really want by next to see a whole array of new mutant character with unique powers and backgrounds. And statistically a lot of them should come from the Southern Hemisphere.

Anyone else have opinions on this?

My Repowered Mutant Wishlist.

With the return of the Scarlet Witch and the possibility of mutants being repowered after the AvsX event. I am going to be optimistic about the outcome of the Scarlet Witch and her story of redemption. I would love her to join the X-men and begin to undo the wrongs she committed when she depowered the mutants. Unfortunately, most of the big names have already been repowered but there are still a select few characters waiting to return to their former glory.

So here is my list.

1. Dani Moonstar - She is has made the best of her depowered status, like Storm did back in the day, but she deserve her powers back and to be a proud mutant again. Maybe she can get her empathic power back but become more telepathic so she could enter people's dreams and nightmares. (Like in the movie, The Cell.)

2. Wind Dancer -She was such a bright and lovely new character with so much potential until she was depowered and kicked out of the school. I want to see her air manipulating powers return but slight boosted to control oxygen and other gases.

3. Prodigy -He has continued to be a part of the X-men thanks to the help of the Cuckoos restoring his memories. But I want to see him repowered into a more telepathic powerhouse, able to download people's thoughts and memories as well as skills and knowledge.

4. Specter- A student who was a part of the Emma's Hellion Squad. I think his repowering would bring back a cool shadowmelder and possible darkforce weilder.

5. Naiad - Another obscure student who was in Rogue's Squad and lost her power to breath underwater. I would like to see her repowered into a hydrokinetic.

If I could change and rearrange the X-books...

I am currently loving the Regenesis that is going on and the way each book is structured and who is in each of them but I feel like there could be some minor improvements.

The West Coast X-men would be the Gold Team

Uncanny X-men- Premier X-book formed by the most powerful X-men and mutants. (Cyclops, Storm, Magneto, Emma, Namor, Psylocke, Colossus, Magik, Sunspot, Magma, Cypher, Warlock, Omega Sentinel)

New Mutants-Assigned to recruit new mutants and also serve as search and rescue (Mirage, X-man, Threnody, Caiban, Tarot, Catseye, Jetstream, Beef, Bevatron, Windancer, Wither)

Generation Hope: The book about the young x-men recruits and their trainers (Hope, Surge, Transonic, Prodigy, Velocity, Zero, No-Girl, Primal, Loa, Crosta, Stepford Cuckoos and guest starring Emma Frost, Magneto, Storm and Cyclops)

Astonishing X-men: A rotating cast of X-men working around the world to gain good public relations and building support networks Storm, Magneto, Psylocke, Pete Wisdom, Dazzler, Longshot, Domino, Jubilee, Blink, Avalanche, Lifegaurd, Neal Shaara, Meggan, Captain Brittain

Blue Team./East Coast X-men

Wolverine and the New X-men. Supporting book to Legacy with focus on the the headmasters Logan and Kitty and their young x-men students. Roster: (Wolverine, Kitty, Armor, Oya, Kid Omega, Hellion, Blindfold, Match, Anole, Pixie, Mercury, Rockslide, Trance, Indra, Bling, Kiden, Catiana, Bobby Soul, Lil Bro, Kid Gladiator, Broo, Genesis, Klara Plast, Leech, Artie, M Twins, Franklin Richards)

X-men: Legacy. The flagship book on Wolverine's side with the focus being the X-men that staff the school. Roster: Wolverine, Kitty, Iceman, Rachel, Beast, Rogue, Northstar, Aurora, Sunfire, Husk, Dr. Reyes, Archangel

X-men: Generations. Renamed from the adjective-less book to reflect a diverse team of old and new X-men that work alongside the other Marvel teams that are also stationed in New York like the FF or Avengers. (Iceman, Multiple Man, Butterfly, Cannonball, Karma, Warpath, Banshee, M, Chamber, X-23)

X-Factor. Continue operations as is but as branch of the X-men in charge of cleaning up loose ends instead of X-Force and traveling the world: (Havok, Stacy X, Skids, Stronguy, Frenzy, Unuscione, Random, Shatterstar, Rictor, Wolfsbane, Forge, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch)

X-Calibur. Muir Island team lead by Professor X. Mutants gathered by Xavier from around the world who are trained and sent on missions sanctioned by the UN. Mutants Without Borders (Professor X, Legion, Sage, Mimic, Darwin, Sabra, Micromax, Darkstar, Lightbright, Neophyte, Nocturne, Gateway)

I think that's about every mutant accounted for and given a team. I like diversity and allowing every character a bit of spotlight.

New Year X-pectations

These are some of the wondrous and exciting things I am looking forward in the New Year.

Storm in the Avengers and the X-men and beyond, maybe even her own ongoing.

Psylocke expanding her omega potential and working both sides on Cyclops and Wolverine's teams.

Rachel Grey coming into her own at the Jean Grey School.

Dani Moonstar leading the New Mutants on their own blazing trail.

Magik redeeming herself and becoming the X-men's supreme sorceress.

Karma taking up residence in New York and developing her telepathy.

The return of the Phoenix and the Scarlet Witch joining the X-men, hopefully.
