Clones of John Constantine

There is only one John Constantine: Others have tried to make their own.

No Caption Provided
Comicvine had a video that reminded me that there are way to many clones in comics.  Here is a list of a few that John Constantine Clones.  These guys are not DCU copies running around, they are just comic characters some way or another was "inspired" by John Constantine.

List items

  • He is the Original "occult" Detective in a trenchcoat. Even in Vertigo there are direct clones: Such as the American Constan"TEEN" in the movie verison. Lord Constantine in Books of Magick: Life During Wartime. As well as OGN and mini-series versions: like Pandemonium, Dark Entries and City of Demons.

  • Grant Morrison was not allowed to use Constantine in Doom Patrol so he made Willoughby Kipling instead.

  • Steve Niles has admitted to it. John Constantine heavily influenced this character.

  • Gravel was created after Warren Ellis left Hellblazer prematurely. Many of Gravel's stories are seen as "elseworld" John Constantine stories, since they are loosely what Ellis would of done with John. Such as the "Body Garden" which was referenced both as a comment in Hellblazer and an actual arc in Gravel.

  • Another infamous Warren Ellis John Constantine clone. Used in Ellis' Planetary as a symbolic burial to his premature departure on Hellblazer.

  • The female Clone of John Constantine made by Warren Ellis.

  • Another Warren Ellis creation which bares similarities to John Constantine. In this clone the only physical similarity seems to be smoking. The true clone would be in Pete Wisdom's shadowy connections and how he controls them.

  • Trench coat and tie. Good looking and does bad things with magic. Sounds like John to me.

  • No really magical, but is another of Ellis' characters to take the Hellblazer tone of a darker world.

Note the blond hair and Trench Coat.

  • He is called an "occult" detective. He has a trench coat. His creator used to read comics and there is good chances he read Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing is the series John Constantine came from.

@Silkcuts: just because he us heavily inspired by Thompson doesn't mean he also can't have a lot if influence from old Johnny. I just remember reading somewhere where Ellis said something along the lines of Constantine should be more like Jerusalem or something or other. they do have much in common you must admit. smokers, "anti-hero", morally questionable, both have a 'buck' the system mentality I could go on but I wont. but you're the expert.

didn't one of the Doctor Fate's briefly turn into a poor man's Constantine for a few weeks ore something? don't remember where I read that so it may be very off.

as for Light he started as a normal but board teen. after discovering the Death Note he decided to 'cleanse' the world of sin and crime and declared himself God of this new world, something I don't think John would have any interest in doing. he started punishing criminals than to anyone who got in his way, even his own father. it was one of the more interesting parts of the show to see a once genuine and good character slip further and further into madness. kind of like the Punisher. he only wore the trench coat and tie as part of a dress uniform when working with the detectives chasing 'Kira' (Kira of corse was Light) so it was more him playing his part and waring 'work clothes' than a fashion statement like John.

@Mr.Q:  Thanks for those pointers. I need to look into them.
Spider is making more sense once you pointed out a few things.
Same with Doctor Fate.

I have to disagree with Light's inclusion on the list
Jack Carter was used as a homage for the Planetary story, In the beginning he was the Anti-Thatcherite era ideals that John Constantine was supposed to represent and at the end he becomes  Spider Jerusalem. It could also be seen as "Vertigo :Then and Now"

This is Jared Stevens, silly ankh face tattoo and all

Mordru promptly kills him in JSA, no loss here. I thought he had a gold eyepatch too, but I think that was a version of Psycho Pirate that appeared in his book

the one thing I find interesting here is Constance Johanssen as she appeared before Ellis ever wrote Hellblazer...though I don't know enough about the character to discuss her similarities

What about Pete Wisdom? He's not a magician in a traditional sense, but he often acts as a go between for the Government and the mystic realm of Avalon. He's also British, well-dressed, smokes, and was written by Warren Ellis.

Thanks. You've got a great list here. I think you'd have to argue that Constantine is one of the best characters created in the Modern Age simply based on the fact he's inspired so many clones. People want to write him.

Do you know why Morrison wasn't allowed to use John in Doom Patrol? I never knew that was why he had to create Kipling. That seems to be a running theme like when he had to create Zauriel because they wouldn't let him use Hawkman in the JLA.

THANKS!!! GLAD YOU LIKE THE LIST!
I don't have to argue, I know.  If you can't tell by now, John is my favorite character.

When Morrison was writing Doom Patrol the ripples with what would be Vertigo was still finding its way.  Constantine was being developed to appear as a "real" character.  I believe it was Berger's desire to limit John's use so he wouldn't be over exposed like his Superhero counterparts are.  John has always had a mystique of him from his Swamp Thing days, with Morrison's experimental approach to comics, I think it was a lack of trust to maintain the spirit of what would be Constantine.

Sense a large portion of these 'clones' are own by DC it be interesting point to see them form a group or for someone evil run into one another with Constantine mentioning how much they remind him of parts of his life and carrier

Ellis would have to write it since he seemed to create the most clones.

Perhaps the character Trypp from Asylum Press may eventually find his way onto this list?

OH and do you have any more info on the character from Supernatural? An episode or something? You are not speaking of the angel Cassiel I hope who does appear out of nowhere, wears a trenchcoat has issues with the Authorities on High, and uses Hermetic magic to combat various demons, etc.?

Good find with Trypp, you add him to the wiki then he can make the list.

The Supernatural character seems removed from comicvine's wiki... weird.

You know what they say about photocopies and how they are never as good as the original. That is why Psylock (not Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock) will never be as beautiful as you, since you came first.

I am comicvine's magick man remember that. The gods give me an insider view of things and trust me your beauty is equalled internally as it is externally. You just need to find it in yourself, because it is there, you can trust me on that.

I know a lot because of those insiders. And the sparks are in you to grow a fire blazing hot and lovely to keep warm those who are caught in cold. You will find it if you search for it. I am not saying that because I would make you my wifey if I lived near you, what I know and what the gods tell me, the above is true. You can be a bright light if you want to.

I'd object to Dresden's inclusion. The only similarities are the snark, habit of standing up to massively powerful entities and the trenchcoat. Two out of those three are fairly standard for heroes of all kinds. Both use magic, of course, but in different ways. Dresden is the more powerful mage. Constantine can pull off some remarkable things, but that's not where his talents really lie.

His real skill is his manipulation of others, something which Dresden can do (and gets progressively better at), but it's something that he really doesn't like, particularly when his friends get involved.Constantine, however, awesome as he is, is famed for neither altruism, nor nobility. He will lie, cheat and manipulate to get what he wants and do it without blinking. He'll do the right thing, eventually, but he won't be particularly nice about it.

Dresden's famed for both altruism and nobility (it gets him into trouble, frequently), and will unhesitatingly do the right thing, no matter what it costs him. That doesn't mean he can't be ruthless, or that he can't and won't go to some nasty places for help/information, but he doesn't do it as casually as Constantine does.

Really, Dresden, with his brand of snark and the way he uses it to put enemies off balance, his lack of luck at life and romance, mistrust from ordinary people and belief in power equalling responsibility owes much more to Spider-Man than he does to Constantine.

Light Yagami's Personality is not even similar to Constantine.
