Marvel and DC Street-Level Characters

Following my previous list of Marvel and DC bricks, I am now doing a list on "Street-Level" characters. The term typically pertains to heroes who stick to the streets due to being a bit out of their weight class when dealing with anything more dangerous or powerful. These characters almost never use anything other than martial arts, hand-to-hand fighting skills, and various weapons and gadgets (including guns) to get the job done. Once again, this list is in no particular order.

List items

  • The quintessential Street-Level hero, and also more or less the first one.

  • I could actually make an argument that Spidey's just a bit above street-level, but he still fits to a degree.

  • Like Spider-Man there's an argument to be made for Cap being higher than Street-Level, but I already have Spider-Man here, so...

  • Marvel's top Street-Level hero not counting Spider-Man.

  • Daredevil's lover-turned enemy. A very good hand-to-hand fighter, ESPECIALLY post-resurrection.

  • Another questionable example, seeing as how people on Comicvine talk about Iron Fist like he's more or less G-d.

  • Marvel's Bruce Lee. Usually played up as one of their absolute best hand-to-hand fighters. He's also trained Spider-Man.

  • A tough-as-nails killer vigilante who has tangled with the likes of Daredevil, Moon Knight, and even Spider-Man.

  • Probably a bit above Street-Level, but not by a lot. I think he fits.

  • Considering who he's similar to, this isn't surprising.

  • Just like his mentor.

  • The Fallen Son and Black Sheep of the Batman Family. Also more or less the Frank Castle of the DCU.

  • Well, pre-New 52 Tim anyway. Can't say anything about the DCnU Tim.

  • The (illegitimate) son of the Bat and current Robin. It shouldn't be too hard to guess why he's here.

  • As Batgirl.

  • Daughter of Lady Shiva and David Cain. With that kind of gene pool her being a hand-to-hand monster shouldn't be surprising. Many even put her above Batman himself!

  • Mostly as Batgirl. She was more of a "shoot and scoot" type as Spoiler and as Robin, well...let's not go there.

  • Well, she HAS had military training after all.

  • Though she has a sonic scream known as the Canary Cry, she never uses it except against superhuman opponents due to its killing power. Thus, Canary typically relies almost solely on her amazing hand-to-hand skills.

  • Post-Crisis Pre-Flashpoint Huntress. Member of both the Batman Family and Birds of Prey.

  • The Pre-Crisis and current Huntress

  • Possibly. I confess to not being sure about this one.

  • While not quite A-List, she's still got some skills, including training in boxing courtesy of...

  • Taught boxing to, among others Black Canary, Batman, and Catwoman.

  • The original Question

  • The second Question

  • Has hanged out with Daredevil, among others.

  • The evil Black Widow.

  • Less so as Captain America but definitely fits as Winter Soldier.

  • The B-Captain America, though I confess I've always had a soft spot for him.

  • And now we have our first of many street level villains. A regular Captain America villain, the Red Skull fanboy known as Crossbones is a pretty nasty piece of work.

  • I'm kind of kicking myself for having forgotten to include him when I first did this list of mine. But here is now, so it all worked out. This is someone who as far as DC Martial artists go is second only to Cassandra Cain in my opinion.

  • Without question one of THE BEST hand-to-hand fighters in both Marvel and DC.

  • Another one of the greats as far as H2H fighters go, barring that one time CATMAN was able to stalemate him.

  • Not as good as his daughter and Shiva, but still top-tier.

  • Like Batman and Spider-Man, he's pushing the line. Definitely way better than the average Street-Level character.

  • Another "street-level" character whose power levels make her one of the most lethal in this category. Pyrokinesis and all that.

  • Daredevil's most hated enemy. Considering that he murdered two of his greatest loves, its not hard to see why this is.

  • Considering that he's thrown Daredevil around a couple of times, that's a yes.

  • The man who broke the Bat, only to be broken himself by...

  • Actually better than people give him credit for. I also always had a soft spot for him.

  • The newer Azrael, who I personally don't like as much as the original, though the lightsab--er, I mean, swords are cool.

  • The lovely miss Hardy and Catwoman's Marvel counterpart.

  • While better with a sword, her hand-to-hand skills were such that Ras al Ghul himself was impressed.

  • Has apparently tangled with Captain America, which I find hard to believe. But whatever. He still fits.

  • What is it with Spider-Man and sexy morally ambiguous femme fatales with white hair and skin-tight suits?

  • An old flame of Shang Chi. Kind of reminds me of Wei Lin from James Bond.

  • The Bizarro to Iron Fist's Superman...or something like that. Personally I think he looks kind of cool when wearing his second costume.

  • Definitely fits, even though he's more of an archer than a hand-to-hand fighter.

  • Another one of DC's top dogs where hand-to-hand fighting is concerned.

  • Green Arrow's original protege, who fights similarly in most respects.

  • The second Speedy.

  • Especially as Ronin.

  • Again, especially as Ronin.

  • Can't say anything about the original White Tiger, but the newer one seems to fit.

  • They should use him more often.

  • Especially now that he's the current Scarlet Spider.

  • The original Scarlet Spider and second Spider-Man.

  • Something of an anti-Batman. Relies on that fancy helmet of his a little too much, but he's cool regardless.

  • The Crime Syndicate's Batman.

  • A heroic Owlman who resides on New Earth (or at least he used to anyway).

  • At least when part of the Secret Six anyway. Before that, well...he kind of sucked.

  • The sadistic and evil assassin for hire and living proof that Roy's taste in women is terrible.

  • Now I'm cheating. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are not Marvel or DC, but I love them too much to leave them off a list of street-level martial artists.

  • The sai-wielding hot-head with a red headband. He and Elektra should get together some time.

  • The deceptively deadly slacker and party-turtle.

  • The brains of the Turtles.

  • The Turtle's Sensei.

  • The Turtle's arch-enemy. The 4Kids version in particular is a beast in hand-to-hand fighting.

  • The Shredder's "daughter" and a worthy opponent to the Turtles, especially in the 4Kids show.

You could have added Grifter and Midnighter too. Midnighter may not really be a street leveler but a lot of people on this list aren't street levllers either.

I think a huge thing that also defines street hero is someone whose primary job and duty is on the street fighting crime... Obviously, the most powerful heroes aren't spending most if any of their time on the street but some still do both. With that said Luke Cage, Blade, Ghost Rider, Prowler, Jessica Jones, Judge Dredd and Misty Knight would be a start... I'm also part of that one man band remove Captain America since the dude doesn't really fight crime that much lol. Characters that I wouldn't recommend but could be considered street lvl are also Deadpool, Spawn, V, and Hellboy.

@m9ke: I believe I gave a definition at the top of this list. Cage would not be out of his weight class dealing with something more substantial than martial artists or common criminals, whereas most everyone on this list would be. True, Spider-Man and Captain America are superhuman and have faced superhuman threats, but even so, against most people who are above street-level (Cage included), they'd get creamed because their superhuman abilities just don't measure up in comparison to so many others.

I might just remove Cap, Spidey, DS, and Wolverine outright and put them in a separate category, titled "Street Kings", to illustrate how "in the middle" they are, but that's probably a project for another day.

@shroudofsorrow: Can you please run down your classifications with definitions?

To me Luke Cage is street, like you said, you can be superhuman and still be street.

@m9ke: Because his superhuman power level is such that he's more of a "Brick" in my mind. Thus, he's on my Brick list.

@djohn12: True.

@m9ke:The debate of whether or not Cap is superhuman is an ongoing one. The handbook listing him as "Peak Human" is not definitive proof, because those handbooks sometimes get things wrong. Fact is, Cap has numerous displays of superhuman physicality, and his level of strength is superhuman (over half a ton). Besides, a character can be superhuman and still be street-level. Fair point about Wolverine though.

Why was Luke Cage left off your list?

@shroudofsorrow: I think this is a solid list, but my point is that there are a lot of marvel characters who are arguably street level characters who are being left off this list. I honestly think this is a great list. Furthermore, if spiderman and captain america are listed on here so can many of the characters listed below.

Pretty solid listing, pretty solid.

Put me in the camp that would remove Spidey from the list.

Agree that Cap is borderline, however, he is officially "peak" human (sub-meta) in the official handbook. US Agent on the other hand is Superhuman in stamina, agility, durability, reflexes and strength (class 10), so he should be off the list.

I'm not a DC expert, but Deathstroke apparently is Superhuman as well.

Also, if you include Spider-man, than I would definitely include Wolverine.

Good list. If you're open to suggestions, I'd love to see you add Dr. Mid-Nite, Judomaster (Sonia Sato), Mr. Terrific, and Richard Dragon (to join his peers Lady Shiva and Bronze Tiger, of course;)!

Good list but Captain America should be here, especially considering you included Deathstroke and Spider-man who far outclass him.

@mattferrar: I never said who would beat whom. This list does not list the characters in order of best to worst. As for Spidey not being street-level, I myself acknowledged that he may not fit.

spiderman would destroy batman frist off and spider man isnt a street level hero if he was he would be at the top of this list but hes better then that he saves the world all the time and fights super villains he only stops petty crimes to help out and the supeior spiderman dosent even do that
