Chaotic Good

"Hoo-Boy! Now I've heard it all! And there was Genghis Khan. And Nero. Throughout history cheap punks have tried to make themselves leaders. But in spite of their titles, they were still cheap punks!"

-Green Arrow

A sort of "Heroic Rebel", these are characters who do believe in doing good and set out to do the right thing, but also believe that the law gets in the way of doing the right thing and as such deliberately operate outside of authority and are usually either contemptuous of or distrustful of authority. Chaotic Good characters will only work with authority figures if absolutely necessary and are much more comfortable working outside of it and fighting evil on their own terms. Basically they're more "screw the rules" as opposed to Neutral Good characters, who don't care if they happen to break the rules. It's also worth mentioning that Chaotic Good characters tend to be just a bit more prone to ruthless behavior than other Good characters.

List items

  • Source of the page quote and one of the absolute best examples of this around. Fitting given who he's based off of...

  • On that note we come to another text-book example of this. Robin Hood is the heroic outlaw who in most versions of his story continues to operate as an outlaw even after the rightful king returns precisely because Robin Hood believes that he does the most good when he's not being tied down by any kind of authority.

  • Another excellent example of this, being a man who almost never plays by anyone's rules and usually grumbles a lot whenever he does. Definitely a loose cannon, but one who nevertheless desires to do good.

  • Whenever the raging green monster is definitively good, he tends to default to this alignment. But then again, could you really picture this guy with a sheriff's badge?

  • Like his fellow archers Robin Hood and Green Arrow Hawkeye's got little to no respect for authority, even when serving on either SHIELD or the Avengers. He's a loudmouth who doesn't like taking orders from others, and frequently butts heads with his peers and challenges Captain America and Iron Man's leadership.

  • Cocky, immature, reckless, and hot-headed. Needless to say given all of those things it's no surprise that he also sometimes has authority issues. But despite all of that he is also still one of Marvel's most major heroes, so he fits this.

  • Well, it is kind of right there in the name.

  • Generally much more inclined than the mainstream X-Men to battle anti-mutant forces on their own terms, and definitely aren't ones for operating within the bounds of authority. Basically think an X-Men team more geared to the mentality of Cable and Wolverine who incidentally are among this team's many leaders.

  • Member of X-Force and from what little I've seen seems to be a sort of "Lovable Rogue" type character.

  • Well given that she's a member of X-Force AND Wolverine's clone, it's perhaps inevitable that she comes out being this alignment.

  • During her punk mohawk-wearing b***-on-wheels phase where she became a lot more resistant to authority but was nevertheless still technically a hero.

  • The merciless vampire hunter who is pretty much forced to operate outside of society just by virtue of being who he is. Besides that he does not take orders well and is difficult to work with in a team environment.

  • Like Blade he's a tireless crusader against supernatural forces and as such is pretty much forced to operate outside of society.

  • Just like his predecessor, though he at least might inch more towards Neutral Good at times.

  • Somewhere in-between this and Neutral Good I'd say. As the Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange deals with magical and supernautral threats to the planet, and due to the nature of both his powers and the foes he fights he is often forced to operate outside of society. In fact in the character's early years the general public didn't even know Doctor Strange existed!

  • A street-level hero who is particularly contemptuous of authority, especially with the more recent depictions of the character.

  • A pair of vigilantes who prefer to operate that way, also tending to be a good deal more brutal than many other superheroes such as Spider-Man, who has sometimes outright opposed them on the grounds that they go a little too far sometimes.

  • At her absolute most heroic (just like the character she's based off of). Best summed up by this line:

"You see a badge wedged anywhere in this cleavage!? You remember me reading Scorpia her Miranda rights? We don’t dress up like this so we can get judges to sign search warrants for us, Peter! We work *outside* the law!"

  • Either this or Neutral Good. She did refuse to cooperate with the Superhuman Registration Act after all, but then by the same token she later became part of Omega Flight, though I seem to remember that being a begrudging decision on her part...

  • The Spider-Woman version of the character seems to be either this or Neutral Good.

  • As the new Scarlet Spider where he's still a bit rough around the edges but is also now unambiguously heroic despite his best efforts to convince us all otherwise. He doesn't even kill anymore.

  • Has even less respect for authority than his predecessor sometimes does, also being a pseudo-freedom fighter against the corrupt mega-corporations and other authoritative powers of his dystopian future, in particular Alchemax. And speaking of his predecessor...

  • In the Andrew Garfield films, where he's particularly contemptuous of authority, particularly his line of "I think he's doing something that maybe the police CAN'T". I could also make an argument for his being this in the Spectacular Spider-Man show, at least in the earlier episodes. The version of him seen in Spider-Man Noir is also this.

  • The movie version, who makes it abundantly clear many times than he has absolutely no respect for authority and goes out of his way to operate outside of it as much as he possibly can. Kind of ironic given how his 616 counterpart tends to act.

  • Actually not as often as people think, but he has still been Chaotic Good from time to time, particularly in Batman: Year One and the Elseworlds story "The Dark Knight Returns".

  • At his most heroic, which isn't often, but still.

  • When a hero

  • The band of heroic rebels fighting against the fascist One-Earth Government as seen in Injustice Gods Among Us. It helps that a lot of the characters on the team tend to be Chaotic Good anyway.

  • As their name kind of suggests

  • Sometimes, especially when Gail Simone writes them

  • Same, but as she's the leader of the BoP, this makes sense.

  • Ditto, though she does become more Lawful whenever she's with the Justice League.

  • Huntress on the other hand, is ALWAYS this.

  • Maybe not QUITE as much as Bertenelli, but she does still seem to be most comfortable operating outside of authority.

  • As the second Question

  • The original Question and extreme conspiracy buff. Definitely one of the last people you'd see respecting authority given how much he distrusts it and suspects it of wrongdoing.

  • Yes, believe it or not the big blue boyscout has sometimes been this, more specifically during the early Golden Age and in the relaunched Action Comics by Grant Morrison.

  • Following his transformation into an anti-hero. He may work with Hal and Kilowog, but I think it's generous to say he respects any kind of authority. He definitely seems to prefer doing things his own way.

  • They don't feel remotely obligated to bend knee to the Guardian's humorless restrictions and pursue their goal of spreading love to the rest of the universe on their own terms.

  • Modern depictions of the character tend to have him as being somewhere in-between this and Neutral Good as a rather rebellious space-cop who frequently disobeys his superior's orders when he feels they get in the way.

  • As the GL whose been reprimanded more times than pretty much any other and being even more rebellious than Hal at his worst, Guy fits this alignment to a T.

  • Just like his mentor

  • The Young Justice version

  • By far the most rebellious member of the Gaang with a regularly voiced contempt for authority. She's also much more prone to rouge-like behavior, such as scamming people.

  • As a hero

  • In stark contrast to most other Avatars Korra is VERY Chaotic Good. "I'm the Avatar! You gotta DEAL with it!"

  • At least the second person to bear that name anyway...

  • In the movie at least he's somewhere in-between this and Chaotic Neutral. He's still plenty ruthless and does some ethically sketchy things, but he's also more of a clear-cut freedom fighter than the morally gray anarchist he was in the comics. Again, kind of in-between this and Chaotic Neutral to me.

  • The dashing swashbuckler who nevertheless operates as a Western-era vigilante. That he was also an inspiration for Batman is probably not a coincidence...

  • In the 2012 cartoon after becoming good, though unfortunately for her it's also around then that she gets mutated into a snake monster.

  • At his absolute most heroic, but that in itself is not a common sight. More often Godzilla is Chaotic Neutral or at his worst, Chaotic Evil.

  • The Guardian of the Universe and more specifically the Earth. However his status as protector does not necessarily extend to humanity, and he has no real loyal to any formal authority or institutions, instead being most concerned with preserving the existence of the Earth and keeping it safe from all kinds of threats.

  • Pretty goofy and mercurial in temperament, but also a fairly benevolent individual. As such I kind of see Mikey as being this alignment.

  • By far the darkest of the turtles and one who does not take orders well, frequently butting heads with the others and in particular challenging Leonardo's leadership.

  • The crazy hockey-mask wearing vigilante, who also happens to be good friends with another Chaotic Good character, Raphael.

  • The MCU version after going through Character Development, considering that he still wants to break the law after being given a clean slate and becoming a hero. He only doesn't because he's prevented from doing so.

  • Post Character Development when he starts to embrace his role in the Rebellion more and becomes a text-book heroic rebel instead of a selfish scoundrel.

  • Heroic rebels after all. Not to mention the fact that they're also technically terrorists, but still heroes in spite of it.

  • Personally I see him as more True Neutral but a case could be made for his being Chaotic Good, or at the very least becoming Chaotic Good after going through some character development.

  • Another heroic scoundrel from Star Wars

  • Tends to be quite the rebel who isn't interested in following anyone's orders but her own.

  • As Anakin he tended to be this prior to his fall to the Dark Side, being well-meaning but also incredibly rebellious and resistant to authority, even his own masters.

  • At his most heroic, as even when he's being heroic he tends to be cynical and not at all willing to follow the Jedi's rules, or for that matter the Empires.

  • While I feel I could easily argue his being the other two good alignments also when Light Side, he does seem to slip into this one a lot, particularly during the Mandalorian Wars.

  • The "Paragade" version

  • In the first Mass Effect game only. Post ME 1 Ashley is Lawful Neutral and extremely annoying to boot.

  • BIG TIME in Mass Effect 2 given that he now despises the, as he puts it "bureaucratic crap on the Citadel", operates as a righteous vigilante, and is also far more brutal than many of Shepard's other squadmates.

  • Like Garrus she becomes a serious case of this in Mass Effect 2.

  • Post character development, where he sets himself up as leader of his people and fights tooth and nail to preserve them, but is also suspicious and distrustful of most outsiders and isn't all that interested in the authority of the Council or the races that comprise it.

  • Most people would say he's Lawful Good, but the fact is, Jacob is VERY cynical regarding authority and has just as little faith in the Alliance and the Council as Garrus does. Ergo, he's Chaotic Good.

  • As a heroic and charming thief, she's somewhere in-between this and Chaotic Neutral. I personally see her as being more the latter, but an argument can be made in favor of her being this. Largely having to do with her being frankly one of the nicest and LEAST brutal of all your different party members.

  • An independent kunoichi (female ninja) who operates completely outside of authority and working from the shadows. Also of note is that she rejects the power of Soul Calibur just as much as she does Soul Edge, even though the former represents "order".

  • A very quirky and eccentric Samurai who seems to have a very Robin Hood-esque methodology, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, which he also does in his SCIII ending. His mercurial and free-spirited nature also goes a long way towards showing him to be Chaotic, and he is also benevolent and fighting against the forces of evil, so...

  • Admittedly I don't know that much about the character, as my knowledge of Street Fighter is practically nil, but what little I do know suggests she is a fairly good character, and she doesn't seem terribly Lawful, so she's either this or Neutral Good.

  • Again, I confess to not know as much here as I would like, but once again his described personality seems to fit this alignment relatively well, so...

  • A serious showboat, but nevertheless one who is consistently on the side of good.

  • A freedom fighter with a rebellious streak as well as an addiction to action and stimulation. He does not like being cooped up.

  • A member of Sonic's freedom fighters, and also an aggressive "berserker" type hero, which suggests this alignment to me.

  • As a member of Sonic the Hedgehog's freedom fighters (IE: Heroic rebels) I'd assume him to be this.

  • As more or less a heroic mercenary I figured he'd be either this or Neutral Good.

  • As a whole, though at their worst and most ruthless they tend to inch more into Chaotic Neutral territory. That said they're still usually this due to being anarchists who operate outside of authority but also being well-meaning crusaders against evil.

  • Major Assassin from Medieval times

  • Major Assassin from Renaissance times

  • The Assassins Creed version

  • After embracing his Assassin roots

  • Before becoming corrupted

  • The Disney version

  • Also the Disney version

  • The ultimate Slayer whose had a rebellious streak and resistance to following orders from the very beginning.

  • Rebelled against her people's laws that forbade her to fight so she could stand alongside the rest of the Rohirrim in their aiding of Minas Tirith.

  • The quintessential heroic fantasy Dwarf and along with Eowyn above is also one of the VERY few Chaotic Good characters in Tolkein's mythos.

  • I know he's supposed to be seen as Neutral, but at his most benevolent I would argue he shifts to either this or Neutral Good. And considering how awful most other people in that world are, he tends to come off as one of the better people in Westeros just by virtue of comparison.

  • In contrast to his two best buds, who are Neutral Good. Ron I feel fits this more due to the fact that he is the most rebellious of the three and also the most naturally resistant to authority and following orders. He also tends to instantly assume the worst of most authority figures so...

  • In at least one High Fantasy setting but probably more, they are listed as being of Chaotic Good alignment. Me personally I always figured Elves could be any good alignment and might even prefer order and thus be Lawful, but...

You have Moon Knight (who's cool don't get me wrong), yet you don't have the Punisher?

@jadenyuki: Punisher's a bit too brutal to constitute good in my mind. Wolverine may be a killer, but he tries to rein it in at least a bit, and most of his kills are either heat-of-the-moment affairs or else against really awful people, whereas Punisher's killings are both more indiscriminate and pre-meditated.

As for Moon Knight, he's brutal too, but he never seemed to be as brutal as the Punisher. Of course, in fairness, I haven't read all of his appearances. If he's ever been a habitual and indiscriminate killer like Punisher, than I'd probably judge him to be Chaotic Neutral same as the Punisher.
