Anti-Villains Part I

Having done lists for all five kinds of Anti-Heroes, I will now be doing a list for all five kinds of Anti-Villains, a term that pertains to villains who for whatever reason are not pure evil. The first kind is what TV Tropes calls a "Punch Clock Villain". For these villains, they only do bad things for money or to get by, and it's nothing personal. Please note that villains who do truly evil things (like genocide and torture) for money are NOT this, nor is "Just following orders" a valid excuse or justification for fitting this when the "orders" are again, extremely evil things. It needs to be more "I work for the bad guys, but only so I can put food on the table, not because I'm evil".

List items

  • Beginning the DC examples with Captain Cold, who will only kill if you get in his way and besides that shows many moral standards (no killing women or children for example). Really all he wants is some money. He doesn't really want to hurt anybody...usually.

  • When a villain, as the worst thing she ever does is steal from people richer than her. Pretty benign compared to the rest of Batman's Rogues Gallery.

  • The DCAU version

  • Fairly self-centered, but notably also possess a streak of altruism, as shown in both of his appearances.

  • As they are led by Captain Cold, this makes sense.

  • She doesn't want to hurt innocent people. Only make some money. She'll still kill you if you're in her way though.

  • As a whole. The individual members on the other hand...

  • The DCAU version

  • Beginning the Marvel examples we have minor Spider-Man villain Beetle

  • One of the nicer members of the Serpent Society, even if that's not saying much.

  • Some of them, including their most well-known one.

  • During World War Hulk he was one of the more reluctant members of the Warbound and even acknowledged that what they were doing was wrong, but nevertheless felt compelled to obey his king.

  • Many of their rank-and-file goons.

  • He sometimes has shades of this.

  • Like Hiroim, he was one of the more reluctant members of the Warbound during World War Hulk.

  • Sort of. He wants to kill Spider-Man, but beyond that he tends to not have any kind of malevolent agenda. My version happens to be quite affable outside of his hunt for Spider-Man.

  • In the Spectacular Spider-Man show

  • Especially in the Spectacular Spider-Man show.

  • Especially in my Marvel Universe.

  • When a Herald of Galactus

  • As he puts it, "I do this for the cash, and not thrills". My version in particular thinks there's something seriously wrong with people who do what he does for fun.

  • In the Spectacular Spider-Man show.

  • Some of them anyway

  • Beginning the Star Wars examples with Vader's right hand man in Empire Strikes Back. Honestly he never seemed like THAT bad a guy.

  • The iconic bounty hunter. He's merciless and cruel, but not completely without standards and not one to indulge in random cruelty.

  • Even more of this than Boba Fett is, at least after getting "healed".

  • Some of their members are this.

  • Shades of it when serving as Vader's Apprentice.

  • Just like his son, even though he can be pretty callous sometimes.

  • It's occasionally implied that some of them are this.

  • "It was just a job..."

  • Beginning the misc. examples we have Abstergo Industries. Though the organization as a whole is not this, some individual members are, such as Doctor Sung.

  • When with the Foot Clan

  • Though he wants immortality and can be fairly amoral in his pursuit of it, outside of that goal he's really not THAT bad a guy.

  • Sometimes

  • In the 2003 TMNT show, at least initially.

  • Not really all that evil or malevolent, but working for Azula.

  • When with Organization XIII. He's not a bad guy, he's just working for bad people whose true nature he isn't even fully aware of.

  • Sometimes

  • Not a bad girl, but still one of Azula's chief "allies".
