Spot on. I don't see why everyone is so hung up about costumes in comics serving a practical purpose. What does it matter if the costume serves a practical purpose? It's fiction, and I don't see why everything in a comic book has to translate directly into the real world. The idea of these straps having a purpose never even crossed my mind and the fact that this is a topic of debate, frankly, baffles me." They have the same reason as Cyclops wore a belt with pockets... "
From a design point of view I think that what some have said about them being used to give Diana a more Greko/Roman look is probably right. My first though on seeing the straps was "That looks better. Much more Amazonian Warrior" and that, I presume, is what they were after. It even gives the jacket a sense of purpose (which may sound like a contradiction to my earlier statement but the difference here is that I found purpose through the comic itself (that I wasn't looking for), not that i was looking for a purpose for it) as it hides the straps from view when shes wandering around on a street level. It's more like civvies that costume at that level.
The trousers I really like (and those little metal heal clips which) and I've said it a hundred times already but they are a huge improvement over the old costume where she was just wandering around in here underwear. I also like the new golden bracelets (although I'm not sure about the "W"s on them) and the straps are very cool looking. The thing I don't like about the new costume is the top..... There is just something about it that I don't like. Maybe its because it's such a toned down version of the old one and doesn't look all that super. Maybe not. It also doesn't seem to have helped WW keep her dignity(?). In fact as her boobs looked like they were flying all over the place in issue 602 and there was a lot of cleavage on show.
So, in summary, I like the straps and the trousers. Why the costume needs a purpose I don't know and I like that the feel of the costume can go from Warrior Princess to a more subtle Street look.
Now lets see what the story is like when it gets rolling.
