Hellboy, Spawn, & my reason for asking so many questions lately

Two characters from hell and have some kind of gun that they use as a weapon. I've been looking g into these characters & both of them seem really interesting. I have some questions about the two though. Some questions might be the same.

Hellboy

  1. How good are his comics?
  2. Are the spin-offs worth reading?
  3. What trade is a good place to start reading Hellboy?
  4. Is there any Hellboy ongoing series or are they just mini/limited series?

Spawn

  1. How good are his comics?
  2. Are the spin-offs worth reading?
  3. I noticed with Spawn, his earlier comics are being collected in Spawn Origins. Is it better to get the trades released back then or the Spawn Origins trades?

I know lately some of my previous blogs or most of them have just been me asking kind of dumb questions like is this series any good or what’s a good recommendations for this genre. I only ask because I want to expand my reading from Superman to Spider-Man. They're great heroes and are famous; it would be nice to read some other comics that feature a darker character like Spawn. These questions might get annoying but I figure I should ask them here and if anyone else has the same questions as I do, they can look here and see whoever comments my blog recommends.

Hey no problem... I can only speak for Hellboy but I can safely say that they are amazing and definitely worth reading. Hellboy isn't really an ongoing series, just a continuous bunch of awesome mini series. You could probably jump on at any one of the trades without too much trouble, but I recommend Seed of Destruction (the first one) mainly because that's where I started and chances are if you end up liking Hellboy you'll probably want to buy that one anyway.

I haven't read all of BPRD (which spins off from Hellboy after the Conqueror Worm trade) but I think if you pick up Hellboy and enjoy it, you'll probably love BPRD too. There are a pretty intimidating number of BPRD trades, but they're generally self contained and great reads.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with some more info, but good luck with your search and hopefully this information is helpful!

Yeah, Mignola (the creator of Hellboy and BPRD) is gold.
yup, all good stuff.
seed of destruction.
the trades are collected chronically so it shouldn't be that hard to start reading, you should also check out Plague of Frogs, the volumes collect about 3 trades each for a great price ($34.99)
Meh on Spawn.
meh.
the latter.

I have read only the volumes 1 and 2 of Hellboy and vol. 3-5 wait me with a bunch of other comics. I'm not so impressed. I have some problems with the way the story progresses mainly and how he makes some characters more important than Hellboy himself. I have heard that after the 3rd volume, every story is top.

1. Spawn comics where good at first (to about issue 65-75) then it went down a bit. Then it perked back up when the new Spawn came along.

2. I never actually read any but Gunslinger Spawn was supposed to be good.

3.I'd get what evers cheapest lol

You have to keep in mind this stuff was published over the course of years as a bunch of short stories, personally I think it's all great but it's definitely as the series progresses that the arcs get bigger, although pretty much everything is connected

I don't mean that. I mean, if you read only one limited, the story doesn't progresses well. For example, we have Seed of Destruction. It would be logical for Hellboy to be in the centre of the events, since it's his debut story. Yet, Liz is the catalyst. I didn't like that because I don't know the character, I can't sympathize with her (yet) etc.

Also, in the second limited, the story begins with a particular villain. Later we have a change and the villain changes. The truth is I prefer the 2nd villain. :P

I would have to agree. Once Mcfarlane comes back and does (i think its #200) it starts to pick up again. I havent been keeping up with it since Todd left. But maybe I'll start buying some more
