The Harlan Ellison Comics Bibliography

This is a bibliography of all of the comics work of Harlan Ellison. Though comparatively his work in comics seems slight, he had a lot of influence over some of the best writers, artists and editors in the comics industry. A lifelong collector, Ellison's comic book collection spanned many generations, though in later years much of it was sold off to pay for medical and legal expenses. He was a huge supporter of independent comic book creators, and numbered as his friends such comics luminaries as: Neil Gaiman, Neil Adams, Julie Schwartz, Len Wein, Jim Steranko, Jim Valentino, Paul Chadwick, Ken Steacy, Don and Maggie Thompson, Roy Thomas... the list goes on.

List items

  • Adventure Comics #479, DC Comics, March 1981

Dial H For Hero was a really cool concept where you could write in an idea for a superhero and they'd publish it for you in a comic. Harlan Ellison created the character of Silver Fog used in this issue.

  • Alter Ego #31, TwoMorrows Publishing, December 2003

Contains Harlan Ellison's original story synopses for the Avengers/Incredible Hulk crossover story from Avengers #88 and Incredible Hulk #140.

  • Amazing Heroes #119, Fantagraphics, June 1987

    Harlan Ellison letter printed.

  • Amazing Heroes #44, Fantagraphics, April 1984

  • Anything Goes #3, Fantagraphics, March 1987

Harlan Ellison makes a brief appearance in Dave Sim's Cerebus story.

  • Art of Al Williamson, Blue Dolphin Enterprises, 1983

    Harlan Ellison blurb.

  • The Avengers #88, Marvel Comics, May 1971

Contains "The Summons of Psyklop" Adapted by Roy Thomas from a story treatment by Harlan Ellison. This issue is the first half of a two part story that concludes with The Incredible Hulk #140. The original Harlan Ellison plot treatment was actually first published in Marvel's in house fanzine Marvelmania #4. Be warned, this issue suffers from early 70s Marvel cheesiness, and Roy Thomas stretches the boundaries of intelligible scripting by working buckets of Ellison story titles and veiled Lovecraft references into his dialogue. The upshot is Ellison's core story is solid and Thomas adapts it well. The artwork is also on-point with pencils by the great Sal Buscema.

  • The Avengers #101, Marvel Comics, July 1972

Contains "Five Dooms To Save Tomorrow" adapted by Roy Thomas from a story treatment written by Harlan Ellison originally as a Hawkman story for DC Comics. Editor Julius Schwartz rejected it as, "too adult for the average comic book reader." It was published with the names of the main characters changed in the seventh issue of Don and Maggie Thompson's fanzine Comic Art. Roy Thomas read it, got ahold of Harlan Ellison who gave his blessing and Thomas re-worked it into an Avengers story.

  • Avengers #27, Marvel Comics, April 2000

Contains a reprint of Avengers #101, "Five Dooms To Save Tomorrow" by Harlan Ellison and Roy Thomas.

  • Batman #237, DC Comics, December 1971

The main story is based on ideas suggested to the writer Denny O'Neil by Harlan Ellison and Bernie Wrightson.

  • Batman '66: The Lost Episode GN, DC Comics, January 2015

Adapted by Len Wein, this story is based on Harlan Ellison's unproduced script for the 1960s Batman television series. The script would have introduced Two-Face to the show's rogues gallery.

  • Batman: Black and White GN, DC Comics, January 2003

Contains a reprint of the Harlan Ellison story "Funny Money", from Batman: Gotham Knights #13.

  • Batman: The Dark Knight #4, DC Comics, September 1986

Harlan Ellison makes a brief off camera appearance and has one of the best lines in the series.

I had no idea he'd written so many letters and blurbs for comics, much less the stories and interviews. The only thing I was aware of was him creating The Silver Fog for Dial H For Hero. :)

@cbishop: Yeah, I did the original list about four years ago and it had like maybe 50 things on it. Then a few weeks ago someone asked on the Harlan Ellison fan Facebook Page if he had ever done any comic book work and someone else replied with a link to my list. I was going to just let it go but then Maggie Thompson gently suggested that I fix some factual inaccuracies and expand it into something useful. So, now I have this Brobdingnagian monstrosity to contend with. I still don't think the thing is complete, and it's killing me that I can't re-order the entries so that they're alphabetical, but I am pretty pleased with it.

Yeah, unfortunately, it forces the change from "ordered list" to "unordered list" after 100 items. So the only thing you can do if you want it ordered is to make multiple lists. And you can do that- just use the text space to put "Previous/Next" links in (you'd have to do that manually with the "Link" button in the tool bar).

Forgive me if you already know that- I choose to err on the side of overexplanation sometimes.

@cbishop: Lol, thanks again for the idea and don't worry. There's a four year gap in my wiki skillz so over explanation is a good thing.
