The Harlan Ellison Comics Bibliography

. To Save a World!Adventure Comics #479, DC Comics, March 1981 Dial H For Hero was a really cool concept where you could write in an idea for a superhero and they'd publish it for you in a comic. Harlan Ellison created the character of Silver Fog used in this issue.

. The Summons of PsyklopThe Avengers #88, Marvel Comics, May 1971 Contains "The Summons of Psyklop" Adapted by Roy Thomas from a story treatment by Harlan Ellison. This issue is the first half of a two part story that concludes with The Incredible Hulk #140. The original Harlan Ellison plot treatment was actually first published in Marvel's in house fanzine Marvelmania #4. Be warned, this issue suffers from early 70s Marvel cheesiness, and Roy Thomas stretches the boundaries of intelligible scripting by working buckets of Ellison story titles and veiled Lovecraft references into his dialogue. The upshot is Ellison's core story is solid and Thomas adapts it well. The artwork is also on-point with pencils by the great Sal Buscema.
. Five Dooms To Save TomorrowThe Avengers #101, Marvel Comics, July 1972 Contains "Five Dooms To Save Tomorrow" adapted by Roy Thomas from a story treatment written by Harlan Ellison originally as a Hawkman story for DC Comics. Editor Julius Schwartz rejected it as, "too adult for the average comic book reader." It was published with the names of the main characters changed in the seventh issue of Don and Maggie Thompson's fanzine Comic Art. Roy Thomas read it, got ahold of Harlan Ellison who gave his blessing and Thomas re-worked it into an Avengers story.

One of the pastiche stories "N is for Nemotropin" is based on a painting by the superb Underground Comix artist and Vaughn Bode protege, Larry Todd. . Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor #1Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor #1, Dark Horse, March 1995 This criminally short lived series was Harlan's dream project and much more than any Ellison fan could ever want. A rotating who's who of the best creators in comics adapted many of Ellison's best stories to comics form. As an added bonus, each issue contained a brand new Ellison short story. *Ellison was so upset with John Byrne's loose adaptation of his classic story, "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream", that he had Dark Horse run installments of his original text alongside Byrne's adaptation for comparison. The story is also unsurprisingly missing from the graphic novel collection.

. "Heroes For Hope"Heroes For Hope Starring the X-Men #1, Marvel Comics, December 1985 Harlan Ellison contributed a 3 page story starring Wolverine. There's a story Ellison tells that he was so in love with Miller's artwork for his story that he had high quality stat copies made to hang in his office. Somewhere along the way Marvel lost the art for the story prior to publication, so they bought Ellison's copies. Years later, the artwork resurfaced, and Marvel sent it to Ellison as a thank you. So, not only does he own the original art, but Marvel actually paid him for the privilege. What Frank Miller has to say about that is not currently on record.

The publication date of this issue is April 1st and as a parnk of sorts, Roy Thomas worked pretty much the entire contents pages of two of Ellison's short story collections into the dialogue and caption copy of this issue. Chris Day, the master archivist of all things Sequential Ellison threw down a bit of a challenge to see how many a sharp eyed reader could spot. For anyone who's interested check out my blog post about it here on Comic Vine. I'd do it here but there's this whole limited space thing.
. HeroIncredible Hulk #286, Marvel Comics, August 1983 Bill Mantlo, Sal Buscema and Kim DeMulder did a straight up adaptation of Harlan Ellison's Outer Limits teleplay "Soldier" which they re-titled "Hero." There was only one little hitch with this issue, and that was that not only was Ellison never contacted about the adaptation, but he wasn't even credited in the issue. Ellison contacted Marvel's vice president after the issue's publication, and an amicable settlement was reached. Legend has it that Ellison was paid the same amount as the writer for this issue and a copy of everything Marvel published for the rest of his life. Jim Shooter maintained that Ellison's credit was dropped because the book was changing editors at the time, though what that had to do with anything is anybody's guess.

The Ellison Title Challenge. Incredible Hulk #140

Classic Herb Trimpe cover Incredible Hulk #140
Classic Herb Trimpe cover Incredible Hulk #140

So, here's the deal. In the letters page for the Harlan Ellison story "The Brute That Shouted Love At The Heart Of The Atom" Incredible Hulk #140, the editor lets it spill that adaptation writer Roy Thomas gave the readers a little bonus for April Fools Day. The publication date of the book was April 1st. According to the paragraph, Roy Thomas worked in the titles to "over twenty Harlan Ellison stories (namely, the entire contents page of Paingod and Other Delusions and The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World)" as dialogue and narration script.

Chris Day, the master archivist of all things Sequential Ellison, (yes he's the web master at the Sequential Ellison website.) threw down a bit of a challenge to any sharp eyed reader that wanted to tackle it, to find all the titles in question. Since he's never tried it, and my ultimate goal is that his web site be the most complete repository of Ellison related comics knowledge on the planet, except for Comic Vine, I thought I'd give it a whirl.

A quick dig through my book archive revealed that I do in fact have copies of both Paingod and Other Delusions and The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World in editions printed prior to 1971, which would have been the editions that Roy Thomas was working from, thus negating the need to reference the vile Wikipedia or the inestimable Ellison Webderland.

If anyone else has the urge to dig through a silver age comic for Ellison related trivia, let me know. I'd be interested in the results. Harlan Ellison fans are legion, but I'm not sure a lot of us read comics to the extent we should. A fact that would have made Uncle Harlan sad on a good day, and angry on any other day.

The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World

The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World
The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World

1. The cover copy is an obvious play on the title.

2. Introduction: The Waves In Rio- page 8 panel 2

3. The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World- While it doesn't appear verbatim, it is used as the story title with a little bit of tweaking.

4. Along The Scenic Route- page 11 panel 6

5. Phoenix- page 7 panel 4

6. Asleep With Still Hands- page 15 panel 1

7. Santa Clause vs. S.P.I.D.E.R.- page 14 panel 3 (sort of, the title was adjusted to read Spider-Man, but close enough.)

8. Try A Dull Knife- page 14 panel 1

9. The Pitll Pawob Division- page 12 panel 1 (Kudos for working that one in.)

10. The Place With No Name- page 6 panel 4

11. White on White- page 18 panel 6

12. Run For the Stars- page 15 panel 3

13. Are You Listening?- page 7 panel 3

14. S.R.O.- page 15 panel 1 (This one makes no sense in the Narration, but it's there, nice try anyway.)

15. Worlds To Kill- page 11 panel 7

16. Shattered Like A Glass Goblin- page 13 panel 1 (Believe it, it's there verbatim.)

17. A Boy and His Dog- page 7 panel 5

Paingod and Other Delusions

No Caption Provided

1. Introduction: Spiro Meloriai: From The Vicinity of Alienation- (Definitely not used.)

2. Paingod- page 7 panel 3

3. Repent Harlequin Said the Tick Tock Man- page 13 panel 1 (He stretches for it, but it's there.)

4. The Crackpots- page 16 panel 3

5. Bright Eyes- page 8 panel 6

6. The Discarded- page 15 panel 5

7. Wanted In Surgery- page 14 panel 6 (Not bad considering this story takes place in a fantasy setting.)

8. Deeper Than The Darkness- page 6 panel 4

Well there you have it, all but three titles from the indica of both books. It makes for some cornball dialogue and really odd narration, but strangely enough, Thomas made it work. Special mention on page one, the recap is described as a "Dangerous Vision" which is a nod to Ellison's groundbreaking and multiple award winning speculative fiction anthology from 1967. And on page 8 in panel 1 and 5, the strange noise that the crowd makes, "mrmee, mrmee, mrmee, is actually the last thing that The Tick Tock Man says when it's pointed out to him that The Harlequin has made him late. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking up the dove audio version of Repent Harlequin Said The Tick Tock Man. It's read by Harlan, and when he gets to that last part... chilling.

When good Wiki goes bad!

OMFG I am so chapped right now. Somebody gutted the massively detailed Alan Moore creator page I spent days researching and compiling, and because of all the Wiki points I accrued my name is stuck to this horrific thing for all to see. I assure you all I had nothing to do with the current mess that's posted under the Alan Moore entry.

The Chaste Monk 4

Okay, I hate just wasting blog posts without telling you anything interesting so let's do some fun facts and whatnot. Did you know that Matt Fraction started out as one of the more vocal people on Warren Ellis' Delphi board. After a long running discussion on comics activism Matt, along with two other guys formed SAVANT, which was an online magazine dedicated to spreading the good word that comics are cool. SAVANT eventually fell apart, but in its time it held some of the best comics related online journalism ever put into digital bits.
