The love of Scott's life they liked each other from the first moment they met at the Institute. They eventually began dating and eventually became engaged. Scott was heartbroken when Jean apparently died. Jean returned from the dead but was seduced by the Hellfire club and became the Dark Phoenix. She killed herself after destroying a planet of sentient beings. Jean then came back again and it was discovered the Jean that was the Dark Phoenix was not Jean at all but a cosmic entity posing as Jean. Scott left his wife Madelyne for the newly resurrected Jean and they were married. But Scott's psychic affair with Emma Frost drove them apart as well as Jean's emotional affair with Wolverine. Jean was killed by the mutant Xorn.

Scott's first wife.He fell in love with her due in large part to her resemblance to Jean. They had a son Nathan together. Scott left Madelyne and Nathan when he learned that Jean had returned from the dead. Madelyne later discovered that she was Jean's clone. She became consumed by jealousy and tried to Kill Jean by psychically tying Jean to her when she killed herself. She returned as a psychic construct and formed the Sisterhood of Mutants in an attempt to resurrect Jean's body and make it her own. During this time she used her telepathy to disguise herself as Emma Frost and sleep with Scott. She "died" when she was unable to possess Jean's body.
