You know, I heard about how bad this movie was long before I saw it, but even then, the FF are four of my favorite marvel characters of all time (complete with my favorite villain of all time Doctor Doom!) so when the bad press came out, I just had to see it for myself.
What makes me sad is this movie definitely had potential. The first 30 minutes offered some pretty interesting takes on the characters. Even dark and drastic changes such as Ben Grimm's iconic "It's Clobbering Time!" actually being his abusive older brother's catch phrase intrigued me. I was willing to go along for the ride so long as there was a pay off to it later on in the film, buuuut unfortunately there wasn't. Which is what kills me the most! The entire first act of this movie is actually pretty decent, offering a new, grounded take on these characters and setting up a lot of interesting ideas and character dynamics. And the moment they get their powers? Holy crap, that was probably the scariest scene I've ever seen in a comic book movie as you experience the horrors Reed is seeing. For a split second I had a glimmer of hope that this movie was actually going to be somewhat decent and that the bad reviews were just people being too harsh on Fox for their dramatic changes to the canon. Theeeeeeeeeen Act 2 began...
What's ironic is the second their get their powers is the second it stops feeling like a Fantastic Four movie. What is clearly at work here (much like the reviewer said above) is that there were just way too many cooks in that kitchen! What we get is 2 different movies; the initial one Josh Trank wanted to give us (which encompasses all of Act 1) aaaaaaand the one several different producers and studio heads wanted to give us (which unfortunately is the jumbled up mess that is Acts 2 and 3). Someday we'll get the Fantastic Four movie we've always deserved, but this one is unfortunately the furthest thing from that movie.
