The first story arc that I ever read. It is absolutely amazing, and to this day holds a resonance after reading it....a kind of foreboding sadness. The first death of Jean Grey. The first of many, but this did it first.
Yes, Greg Land is on art - although this is some of his best work, mostly devoid of the controversy that plagues his later work. Still, you have to admit, it looks good. The story too, by Greg Pak, is solid and thoroughly enjoyable, further building on the mythology of the Phoenix Force and it's connection to Jean. A favourite, simply because it's soooo good.
A refreshing, new take on the Avengers. Amazing art by Bryan Hitch. A dark story, that makes the reader feel genuine terror for the characters involved. Here, anything can happen.
Joss Whedon (one of my all time comic heroes) managed to revitalize the X-men, after 60 odd years of storytelling. That's no mean feat. And to do it so well.... makes you immediately fall in love with these characters. And who doesn't love the Emma Frost/ Kitty Pryde conversations? "Oh my god....You teach Ethics!?!"
