Data Dump: Comic Vine May - Popular People Edition

You guys add alot of new comics to the wiki in one month

It was way back in January that I last made a post about data and what the community is editing or reading or commenting on. First let me say, you guys have done a stellar job on the wiki this year. At the start of the year we created a new style guide and pretty quickly all the major character pages were cleaned up and converted to our new article style. Our pages are way easier to read now, plus it's much easier to start new pages now that we have a guideline for what kind of information we want in an article. So thanks everyone for helping make this the largest and best comic wiki on the planet.

Anyway, let's get back in the swing of things and talk about the month of May. If you look at the graphs below you'll see that THOR, Green Lantern and X-Men get quite a bit of attention around these parts. And you'll see that RazzaTazz wrote over 200 reviews in one month? Can that be right? Let me just say, you guys are all crazy, and I mean that in a good way. Check out these charts:

And I'll leave you with the popularity contest winners. Here's the top 25 most viewed user blog posts. Now in general people read a blog post in our forums, you guys know what I mean right? But I suspect you're pretty popular if people are taking the time to go to your profile to read your blog. So congrats to all the popular people who are better than the rest of us, I guess you think you're something special :)

are you sure we only added that many new comics this month? because CBDB claims to have an average of over 100 new issues added every day and yet we surpassed them in total issues and seem to be widening the gap...I would have thought we added something like 30-35K issues but maybe I'm overestimating

either way, I like these posts, I wouldn't be against them appearing on a monthly basis

(and I wouldn't mind a Top 10 Contributors graph since that's the only area of the site I'll ever have a chance of ranking)

I'll check on the new issue comic books added data. 30K new comics added a month on CBDB?

Ya I think those CBDB stats are a little inflated, they don't nearly have the editor base that CV does. Here are their stats today:

@pikahyper: @aztek the lost: Someone might be able to cross check my data by using this link to guestimate how many new issues per month we add to our db http://www.comicvine.com/issues/

to do that the pagination would have to show up at the bottom of the page :P

Edited to give further explanation:
Most of the time when you browse issues the pagination does not display, occasionally it does.

400 forum posts? I'm pretty sure I had more than that this month.

Posted by pikahyper

Well I'll be doing my part to beat CBDB, I should be adding around 100 volumes with 300 or so issues by the end of the weekend.

@pikahyper: oh yah, that's right pagination was removed from that page. well that sucks.

yeah, I've suspected there stats were a load of crap for a while, plus since there issues don't require covers and their cover count includes variants whereas all our issues require covers and variants don't count as additional #'s in the stats...we're probably WAAAAY ahead of them

If you look close at the listings you'll actually notice that every variant counts as a separate issue, that is why their totals are so bloated, so instead of Civil War #1 being one issue it counts as six because each variant gets its own issue listing and that would bloat their per day totals too since there are so many variants these days. We are totally kicking their asses.

If that's the case, then I don't see how they're accurate. At least the post count one. I do a minimum of 100 posts per day.

Holy crap, wow, I've totally been overestimating them then...I just checked and that Civil War volume is 34 issues (when on this site is would qualify as 9 issues and not all be bunched in the same volume)

Bingo. I go there from time to time to get covers so I have spent some time there and I have noticed over time that even with those stats they really don't have the selection CV does if you think about it, for example they are almost completely limited to American comics while CV has the best international catalog around, they do have a lot of UK comics though.
Moderator

@aztek the lost: oh comics.org (GCD) does have almost three times as many comics as CV does but about half of them don't have covers, their international section is the best online though, I'm hoping to change that some day :D

edited to add:
GCD international stats
Moderator

@pikahyper: yeah, back when I got 2000 AD up-to-date during the reign of 1.0, I used a lot of covers from there but otherwise, but over time I stopped using it that much, wasn't as useful anymore

but GCD is what our database was built off of so if a cover was uploaded from Red LAMP, it's actually from GCD

but we easily have them beat in Japanese, they only have 2 covers! go us!...we're probably pretty close with Italian too I'd suspect as they have under 6000 and our Topolino and Skorpio indexes already equal 4671 covers...throw in the 1500+ covers from resident Italian contributor Marcovaldo and we win!

@Red L.A.M.P.: the pagination is working for the browse issues right now and apparently we have added 34,046 issues between May 12, 2011 - June 11, 2011 (today)

however, for the month of May we only have approximately 30,000 added (Page 12 to Page 42)...I just realized now that the stat in your chart is in the thousands and not tens of thousands so it's VERY inaccurate (and DH's comment about her posts suggests that one is inaccurate too)

@Red L.A.M.P.: oh, I just realized I've been thinking one thing and typing another...the stat is off but for some reason my brain was saying 100 comics a day = 30,000 a month...really it's just 3000...I added a decimal point, sorry...30,000 a month would be ridiculous, by the end of the year we'd almost have run out of comics
