Would you take makeup advice from a comic book character?

No Caption Provided

In my extensive enough exposure to the world of comic books I have noticed something about makeup.  Generally superheroines don’t really wear any, except for a liberal use of mascara and eyeliner.   If they do wear some for an event or something in real life, they usually wear one uniform colour as eyeshadow which just looks like someone wiped a single brush across their face and didn't think of any blending.  There are also some which might wear lipstick, but the way comics are coloured it can be hard to tell.

So when I saw that MAC was coming out with a Wonder Woman line of cosmetics I was a little confused.   MAC for me has two associations.   First of all there makeup artists are capable of some absolutely amazing looks.   Secondly though, their makeup implies being worn in a way which is over the top (past spokespeople have included Lady Gaga, Cyndi Lauper, Christina Aguilera and Boy George – none of them known for their restraint when it comes to makeup.)    In my mind Wonder Woman is the perfect beauty and therefore doesn’t have to wear anything, so the two combined together is an odd pairing.  I don’t therefore agree in this sense with the association

What I sort of do agree with is that Wonder Woman is usually written as a positive role model for girls and women and this might increase exposure.  It is kind of a strange concept though, that in a place where makeup is taught to be key, that the extreme example of no need for makeup is being used.

After all, if you asked Wonder Woman for makeup advice, I think she would just say not to use any.

Indeed, would you buy Protein Powder endorsed by the Hulk? We know he didn't lift any weights, buy the same surf wax Silver Surfer uses? I am not sure you can bottle the Power Cosmic. Self tanning lotion with Storm on the advert? Erm.

I think Zatanna would have been a great choice! (well, I mean, we both already know why Wonder Woman was chosen) but still.

Here's what I think -- I think it's more of an advertisement to use the colours and makeup as an enhancement rather than like Lady GaGa or Boy George. We all know Wonder Woman doesn't wear much makeup (if any, you know you and I have slightly differing views on the WW makeup debate), so maybe it's just like, 'use this makeup and you could be as sexy as WW!'

Besides, the packaging is so pretty! Makeup rarely comes in such neat little containers emblazoned with fancy logos.

This is pretty much the point of this makeup line.

As much as I love the Mike Allred art on the MAC packaging, the 'make-up' they actually used on Wonder Woman is not to be reproduced.  It looked cheap & nasty!  ;)

I wouldn't take fashion or make-up tips from comic book colouring.  However, I do remember achieving the 'Scully look' of smoky eyes when the X-Files was still new.  Something that I've noticed has come back into fashion for TV shows...

haha because Zatanna is the only comic book girl that knows how to put makeup on?  I would argue with the way Harley's full face of costume makeup is done that she has superior skills overall =/ I mean we all know that she does the Joker's too....xP

I wanted to buy some cheap just to have the packaging, but it is all so expensive (I am not a sell out or falling for obvious marketing techniques) ....and the eye liner marker was even to chunky for me to want to use....coming from a girl with cat eyes everyday....>.>

I'd take advice from one, but I wouldn't necessarily go for any product endorsements.

@thehummingbird:  In the subtle way, most people would probably wish to put make up on yes, lol, plus Zee is sorta dressed as much for a night out on the town, than most characters, plus she doesn't have super durability either. I would agree about your argument re Harley. Except for girls like her and Galacta, and Spiral, their skills with an eyeliner pen, are secondary to the niche audience that would appeal to. That must have to be an unfortunate factor.

I think as soon as you said, but, it became apparent to all, that you are not the dark, crazy, twisted person you claim to be, but a sell out and surveyor of mainstream beauty products! I bet you refer to good mascara as hot, and bad mascara as eww. lol ^_^ Man, now for some reason your making me think about how i would apply make up. -_- If I was a girl, I'd probably just either go completely natural, or go for the Emilie Autumn look. You know, either extreme. If you going to do something, might as well do crazily. Wait, wait, what? You steal the eyes of cats? 0_o *reaches for SPCA/PETA phone number*

I can see your point, but Harley is quite amazing...O3O OH and Zatanna's makeup smudges sometimes and it is amazing...I love it when they include that in comics.....-fangirl-  hmmm...and how so are their eyeliner skills lacking? lol

Dark and twisted with a hint of hipster, and el woods from legally blonde? xP that would summarize me? I call could mascara uber actually and bad mascara turdy....;D Haha SC I can really see you doing it just as you said if you were a girl...I think you would be more extreme when attending more normal things just to see the looks you would get XD Sorry It is a bad habit I really need to stop stealing cats eyes...^.^'

@thehummingbird: I know, I agree! Have you seen her 7 Soldiers covers?!?! One is amazing! Oh... do you like the art of Victoria Francés by chance? I like it when they do that as well. Whose lacking? Oh, with Spiral I mean, all her arms, makes her make up look crazy. Plus sadly, women would not want to buy make up, if a girl with six arms was the one on the advert. Galacta is too big, and her eyes glow purple. So on. Not lacking in skills, but there aren't so many girls as tall as buildings looking to buy make up. Only Giganta and Stature. (oh... maybe they would have to buy in bulk though...)

I am fairly low key actually. I would hate being a girl. Or just dress down. Or fly a dragon to the moon to live with the V Andriods. Girls get to do all the cool things!

Yes I am looking for those everywhere! I want them so bad, they have my favorite comic book art of all time!!  Yes for the most part I either love her work or not so much, but most of the time I fall into the love category =) Haha understandable.....>_> though I might be more inclined to buy makeup from a girl with six arms just because it would be s o cool. Awww...really? I might have to ame you be super funky if you ever turn into a girl for a day....>_> that can be added to your list after driving off a cliff and turing back into a boy when they are examining your dead body XD Now are you jealous..? ;)

Would you take personal reality based financial advice, from Bruce Wayne?
