Tower Bridge is Over Done

No Caption Provided
As one of the holdovers of Flashpoint, I am enjoying the fact that Wonder Woman is still residing in London.  Thus far the connection to London itself though has been more or less arbitrary as the action has focused in large part on Olympus or Themyscira (or Sudan I guess.)  What has been shown of London is mostly all too generic, either Diana going to a punk bar (at least I think it was) after she found out about her real lineage.  Another generic thing though which caught my attention was that in the most recent issue when she battles Poseidon, she does so beneath the Tower Bridge.  In a sense I don't mind this, it is kind of famous and I am sure some comic book artists want a chance at drawing it, but on the other hand it displays a pretty poor imagination on the part of the creative team.  I have mentioned before that it would be nice to see some more exotic locales in comics.  Movies does this all the time as real world places stand in for fabricated sets, but this provides a real example of a missed chance.  Instead of Tower Bridge there are many just as famous bridges in London, or if a battle is desired there are numerous landmarks still close enough to the water to make it a plausible location.  This is really not the case with London either as most cities get either the generic atmospheric setting or the cliched locale for the action.  For the new 52 which is trying to shake things up a bit more, it would be good to see a breakthrough in this old staple of comics and to finally see some other parts of the cities in which the characters reside.

Lol I was about to say that, glad you got to be "that guy" before I did :)

Anyway the point still stands. In my opinion London in general is over done. I mean, in media outside the UK if it's not London then it's not Britain. I mean what's wrong with having Wonder Woman based out of Edinburgh? She could have cool fights in Edinburgh Castle:

Or if they needed a bridge they could have used the Forth Road:

To be honest, Tower Bridge is as iconic & 'exotic' as you're gonna get for a bridge in London. The Millennium Bridge has been destroyed in films already, but at least Tower Bridge is prettier.

Well what else could they use, Big Ben? The only building in the world more phallic than the Washington monument?

If you want people to know you're in London, you have to show either Big Ben or Tower Bridge.

@Jotham: Sure, but we already know she is in London, why not therefore use something like Waterloo station or Cleopatra's needle.  Those are both close to the water and would have a similar effect.  Plus the bridge wasnt really used here.

@RazzaTazz: Okay, I get what you're saying, but I'm sure they just wanted to further reinforce that she's in London. If they picked some other landmark, they might confuse their readers.

@InnerVenom123: London Bridge is in Arizona actually. Well the second one. They have replaced it in London, but it doesn't look like much.

@The Poet: This is true, but they could do a small amount of research to get past the most cliched stuff.

@spiderbat87: There are a lot of famous landmarks for Londoners, even ones close to the Thames of water based action is what they are after.

I think what's interesting about moving Wonder Woman to London is that one of the major criticisms I hear about Wonder Woman and DC in general is how tied they are to classic images of Americana (Wonder Woman being inspired by circus rodeo girls and wearing an American flag bathing suit.) I wonder if by keeping her in London, they're trying to distance her from that association?
