The Reverse Panty Raid or the Britney/Christina CD Effect

No Caption Provided

Seeing as I am a bit of an eccentric, I sometimes will go out of my way to do eccentric things.  One of these things is to review or make blogs about events when they occur.  So on Christmas for instance I reviewed an issue of Christmas with the Super Heroes from DC, and on Saturday on the 100 anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic (well she went down on the 15, but hit the iceberg on the 14) I sought out an appearance by the Titanic in comics to review (let’s just say I was probably in the perfect age bracket to really love the movie when it first came out, and have seen it twice already in 3D).  The problem is that the Titanic has shown up only about 5 times in comics, and only once recently.  So I tracked down this issue, in Grimm Fairy Tales.  I had seen this series around but never given it much thought.  My impression of the series was based solely on the covers in which I assumed that the series was essentially a sexualized versions of fairy tales.  After reading the Titanic issue I was a little surprised as it was nothing like what I expected.  In fact, it was a pretty decent issue.  After conferring with some people about the title I decided to check it out, and discovered really that the series is very much aimed at a more mature audience, and even puts a sort of feminine spin on things (though I wouldn’t go so far as feminist.)

This reminded me of the old adage about the CDs of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera that they were bought by young girls (once again I was in the right age bracket) or older guys that liked the picture on the cover and little else.  After looking at the very first issue of the series as well as the main character (Little Red Riding Hood) clearly has her underwear showing.  This reminded me of the social phenomenon of the panty raid, which I had never given much thought to seeing as I have never been a member of a sorority nor have I had many dealings with fraternities.  Still the concept here is kind of different, almost as though the women themselves organized the panty raid so that they could sit the men down and talk to them about some serious topics like date rape, conformity and abortion.  To be fair I am only 6 issues into the monthly title at the moment, but it seems like very much a bait and switch for some.
