The Advent of Bio-Man

I was just searching out an unrelated image in Google Images and came across an interesting article based on a possibility for the next generation of body armour, in this case inspired by the shell of a mollusc. The basic principle works off of the microstructure of the shell, nearly at the atomic level, whereby cracks are allowed to create on a microscale to avoid crack on a large scale.

While the concept might be used for real life, it is strange that in the world of comic characters that there are effectively none (at least none mainstream that I can think of) that use biological inspired devices in their crime fighting careers. I suppose that once upon a time there were characters that used fanciful devices like Bushmaster to replicate the abilities of certain creatures, but on the scale of a more hard science inventor it is mostly lacking. Certainly Iron Man/Tony Stark has experimented with putting his armour inside his own body, though this is more of a case of making the machine fit the man, as opposed to a case of making the man fit the machine. Equally so, the supposed powers of animals are sort of evident on the macros scale but understanding what makes them work is harder and in terms of an application of hard science to science fiction, that biology likely poses the most difficulty for the writer that dreams more than researches.

Perhaps there will be a time in the near future, especially with what is generally a harder science approach to fiction that such a character might be possible, though for now I suppose the concept is waiting for the right author to write it.
