Sex in a moving car … what does it mean?

I don’t usually discuss sex here, not because I am opposed to the idea of discussing (though I do believe in a certain amount of discretion) but rather because I feel like sex and comics don’t generally have a lot to do with one another.  This ties back into the concept of comics originally being aimed primarily at a children’s audience.  This of course has changed over the years and the portrayal of sex has creeped into comics every now and then.  I can’t remember the issue or even the decade but I remember seeing once one of the earliest supposed sexual encounters, between Daredevil and Black Widow, where the two just went into the bedroom together, shared some conversation and then turned off the lights.  More recently I have been reading and run across some near sex scenes in both an issue of between Hank Pym and Tigra, and in the For Tomorrow story arc in Superman where Clark and Lois are shown post-coitus.  So the depiction of one of our strongest desires as humans has been creeping into comics gradually as they have become more adult based.  One thing though which kind of caught me off guard though was a sort of sex related incident in the pages of the Stark Resilient story arc where Sasha Hammer goes as close as possible to straddling Tony while he is driving a car.

In my opinion there are two things which are pretty prevalent in North American culture, that of free and instant access to sex (in essentially any form of media) and a dependence on a culture surrounding automobiles.  So when I saw the two here together it sort of hit me as a strange concept of something to portray.  After all even though children are not the sole readers of comics anymore they still are readers of comics.  This is not really my issue with the action though.   It is more so that we live in a culture where we mock or laugh at the “Double Rainbow – What Does it Mean?” guy but where we idolize such empty and shallow actions like gratuitous sex or driving a car (or both at the same time) but where a man having what for him was a religious experience, is belittled.

Hm, thats interesting. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the X-Force Sex & Violence story as well. There is a little too much sex going on. I think the world as a whole has become much more (for the lack of trying to find a better term) perverted. They want to know what people look like while they are having sex. They want to see it and they enjoy it. To me it's a little much. There shouldn't be all these ads that are trying to get you with beautiful women. There really is too much sex going on. It's making kids at the age of 12 start thinking about it.

Actually, the world has become much less perverted then what it used to be. Think of ancient Rome for example. Images/footage of the act has become much more accessible. And kids of 12 have always thought about it since that's when the hormones kick in, of course it has something to do with the things they see on tv and read, but I think it's good for them if it's shown in a respectable manner.

There's nothing wrong with the act of sex as long as its consensual and is practiced safely. That's what they should show more instead of just the act of it.

I think its to do with what traits people consider desirable governed also by the idea of what they want and how they will be viewed once they get what they want and the perception sometimes being view more as a goal/reward than the goal/reward. Cue emphasis on people wanting to be perceived a certain way to imply certain social, financial intellectual and sexual status. So possibly again, this comes down to wish fulfillment fantasies as well. Something pretty common in comics. Its funny too, because in recent times, Iron Man and well, Tony Stark more specifically, at least to me, has become a bigger character than he was, possibly due to people/writers fans, warming to his unapologetic playboy type attitudes and behavior? That means, embracing the fancy watches, fancy suits, fast cars, cool apps, the glitz and glamour and the women and the money etc where in books I read of him in the past, it seemed like that was something that was attached to him, but maybe didn't define him so much. I mean, they even made him a teenager one time possibly to make him more relatable? Except that failed. Maybe he works better as more of a wish fulfillment character with some minor characteristics that can be relatable, but yeah. Rich, handsome, powerful, guy with cool car and hot girl... pretty standard fantasy. Over enthusiastic, easily amused man that can be labeled as crazy, old, high, spaced out, maybe not so much. Unless he was really skinny and really young? Then he might be a hipster... So I think its a perception/desire thing. How those things relate, can be sold, exploited, and how they appear to others as well. How they are built up and fostered to be the ideals and desires of more than one person, so it can be sold to more people though various forms of entertainment and cultural expectancy.

Sex and money are two of the primary driving motivations for most people, so of course it's going to be shown a lot.

I remember an old EC horror comic story in which a couple climb into the back of a cab & repeatedly demanded it drive faster while they made out on the back seat until the car crashed & the driver died :p

I don't think comics should be treated any differently than novels, games, movies, or TV shows - and we all know sex is featured in those mediums.

Didn't mean to seem anti-sex in media, my issue if I can recall is that sex is treated as something which is idolized when other deeper things are ridiculed.

I see it as a sign of the times. Comics try to be darker to appeal to more people. "Love" just doesn't cut it with the hip kids these days, but sex is apparently sexy... After all, even Scott "I LOVE JEAN!" Summers became a darker & more appealing character to more people when he had a telepathic sexual affair with Emma Frost. Love & Marriage apparently doesn't sell, which is a shame & shows a lack of imagination on the whole industry.

But my point is, why should comics be held to a higher standard? They are no more for children than movies are. Cartoons are also becoming more adult.

To me, the issue isn't as much as idolization of sex as much as materialism and how women are often depicted as material quantities to be possessed by their male counterparts in media. They are an extension to the average male materialistic dream that Tony Stark epitomizes. (On the flip side of this, I suppose you can say that the girls of Sex & The City epitomize the average female materialistic dream...And I'm speaking broadly here. Not all males want to be Tony Stark and not all females want to be Miranda.) But I don't mind sex when it's treated realistically, with relevance to the story, and has a purpose behind it's appearance beyond cheap tantalization. And I wholly agree that it's a shame that in this world where the realm of experience is virtually boundless, so much attention is focused solely upon sex when life and people are about so much more.

Some of the earliest surviving samples of Babylonian art depict sex acts. This is nothing new.

That's actually, quite simply, accurate... That's EXACTLY how it is... Right or wrong that is how it is. It has been that way for a very long time....

Danger, risk and logistical problems (if one of the participants is the driver).

but honestly i think the opposite is true. i dont think sex should be taken out of things especially comics. its a very real part of life. it would be like taking eating out. i also dont think 12 year olds should be guilted or afraid of sex. while they shouldnt have it because they will end up on mtv as teen mom no. 2374 i dont think comics need to censor their storys. many kids in america have very religious parents that inform their children it is a sin to be aroused by a member of the opposite sex and this applies to boys and girls. i think media kids enjoy whether it be a disney movie where the prince and princess kiss, mass effect, a book where one kid has a crush on another, or some comic book where a hero in all his might and bravery is still just like jonny or jane in that, that hero or heroine is attracted to the opposite sex. such things even for kids can provide a shelter from oppressive ideas pushed on them from people they trust.

The opposite is true?

You wrote a lot about kids, sex and media and referenced religion and comics, but what does any of that have to do with sex while driving (which is the topic of this thread)?

You said the opposite of what I posted is true. Does that mean that there is no danger, risk or logistical problems regarding sex while driving?

Seems like you got a bit off topic, dude.
