Oh my ears and whiskers! A closer look at the White Rabbit

This will hopefully be my last of such blogs breaking down the sexier approach of the new 52 at DC (that having been said like most such blogs this month there are spoilers ahead.). I thought overall this week was a lot better than the entire month at DC in its depiction of female characters, even with Voodoo being based in a strip club and seemingly every prostitute in 19th century Gotham being featured in the new Jonah Hex title. I was told by more than one that the White Rabbit in Batman: the Dark Knight was probably the worst portrayal of the week and so after finally reading it today I got to have a look. Overall I liked the issue as I felt the two new female characters were well intentioned introductions (though to be honest at this point it appears that they may be the same person). Anyway I thought I might break down the new character a little bit based on the one panel we saw and from what we know from the coming solicits.

No Caption Provided

Name -  I am kind baffled with its association to Alice in Wonderland. Either it is a campy character who does crimes in the name of Lewis Carroll, like one of the characters from the 1960s Batman television show, or it is a name completely lacking in imagination as it bears a strong resemblance to the character in the novel. A name with rabbit in it doesn't necessarily associate well with a female character seeing as there is an association with the word "bunny" which is a synonym (and I don't know of any serious characters with bunny in their name)

Concept - I really like the concept of the character. For someone like Batman having as his adversary someone who cannot be caught is a great challenge for him. I am interested to see where they take this aspect of the character (although this doesn't really differ that much from other characters like Catwoman in terms of not being able to be caught.)

Costume - I can agree that the costume is kind of a weird one. With a character that cannot be caught, I would have hoped they be something like a super espionage agent and have something really practical. Instead the character has a plush bunny tail, Playboy bunny ears and high heels. The high heels alone in her outfit would make her quite easily catchable, and the rest of the costume itself is not really designed for speed. In terms of the costume itself, it does appear somewhat liberal in its lack of real protection, but contextually as far as comic book character costume go there is inherently nothing really wrong with it. She is about as dressed as Emma Frost was in her early days, and more so than Wonder Woman has been for the majority of her publication history.

Pose - Granted the character is supposed to be one that is running away and can't be caught, but it seemed like a convenient excuse here to put her is a kind of exploitative position

Crazy... We still don't know what she want ? Talk about lack of characterization.

I actually agree with all of this, Razz - to include the text I didn't cite above. Her outfit as is isn't functional at all - and you don't have to sacrifice sex appeal for more clothing. Look at Selena - all we really get most of the time is added cleavage. And to be honest, most of us as men being visually stimulated are going to stare at women in burlap sacks. So put the Rabbit in a white leather suit and flak jacket - give her a little cotton swab on her backside and a pair of radio antennae to act as symbolic ears....hopefully I've painted a decent picture.

I too hope they find a way to tie this lady to Hatter - even if they wind up as situational enemies with her as an amoral foil a la Red Hood. Could be interesting to investigate even more rogue character development insofar as how they act/compete with one another. Good blog ma'am, as always.

I'm going to assume that she was originally a new design for Catwoman. But they figured, that especially with the movie, it wouldnt work so they switched out the cat tail/ears with a bunny & FAP, a brand new villianess. But yeah, hopefully she ends up with the Mad Hatter.

lol i would like to see a new catwoman like that at least for one shot.

Can't stand her. Only way she would work for me is if she worked for Mad Hatter and even then I wouldn't really care about her.

I'm going to be totally honest here... I love this character. I hope she goes on to become DC's Squirrel Girl.

I'm starting to think it's all in Batman's head. Granted, I only saw issue 2 and not issue 1 yet, but is he the only one confirmed to see her? Is this like sixth sense where you can go back and look and nobody directly interacts with her? In Batman The Dark Knight #2, just because she is standing near someone or sitting on someone, they are not necessarily talking to her or looking at her or acknowledging she is there.. I think it's all in his head, it's a mental thing. I do like the ears and the costume colors. :D

good blog man.

Though the concept is cool, the her design really lacks imagination. The fact that I think "playboy bunny"/stripper first proves this design is a failure.

I'm going to put this out there. I don't think she's a villain. I also think I've already guessed her alter ego. White Rabbit, seemed to be more of a hindrance which means Batman dismissed her. He wasn't concerned that she was "escaping" so .. maybe she wasn't escaping. Maybe she wasn't meant to be there? Since Batman is no longer going to largely feature in Catwoman's life, I think White Rabbit is his new amoral love interest. Everything about this character screams selfish and confidence, which was Catwoman's MO in the beginning.

Her costume may seem a little overtly sexual but I don't mind it. I also don't mind that she's Lewis Carroll inspired. If I'm right in who she is normally, Batman's going to be quite interesting.

...oh that and it both has bunny and baseline anthropomorphic appeal so I'm of course all about this without being asked and regardless of it's delivery. (:

I feel an odd though unintentional imagery of a cross between Marvel Comics White Rabbit, Emma Frost and Screwball from the look.

I hope they go the logical route and attach this character to Mad Hatter. I could see her being a Harley to his Joker. This character has

some potential in the franchise market, like video games, toys, statues, ect. I might add.

Not going to go into any sexual conversations at this point due to the Vine being overwhelmed with that at this moment in time,

and I already laid out the extent of my feelings on the subject in prior threads of the same matter...

I wasn't a fan of this issue. I guess woman dressed as bunnies always have to be sexy? It may be Playboy law.

Well, the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland didn't wear any pants either. Neither does Marvel's White Rabbit.
