My Thoughts on the Changed Lineup for the New Guardians

DC is using its 0 month next month to reboot the New Guardians somewhat.  In terms of the story heading throughout the various Lantern titles (worth mentioning that I dropped Green Lantern Corps) there is some kind of trouble brewing on the horizon as the Guardians of the Universe seek to implement the Third Army and replace the Green Lantern Corps altogether and to remove the need for all of the Corps.  The three series that I am reading seem to be progressing slowly towards this.  Anyway here are my thoughts, colour by colour as to the changes or non-changes.

Green
Kyle Rayner is staying in as the Green Lantern representative.  Although there are other Green Lanterns that I am missing since the new 52 relaunch, I see absolutely no problem with this.  Kyle is my favourite human Green Lantern, and really for his publication history, he deserves a place in mainstream DC continuity.

Violet
There is no character that I am more excited to see in this series now than Carol Ferris.  I really likes having Fatality in the first twelve issues, but Carol is such a well developed character that leaving her on the sidelines as only Hal's girlfriend wasted  enormous potential for her.   Plus the costume redesign where it is actually now a costume looks pretty good as well.

Red
In the early days of the new 52, Red Lanterns was among my favourite series as instead of just taking a look at a different Corps in a cosmic setting it examined a lot of interesting concepts like the morality of vengeance.  Atrocitus was the star of this and he remains so even as the series devolved into just another cosmic title.  Bleez did a decent job for the Corps in the New Guardians, but I think having Atrocitus here will make things a lot more interesting

Yellow
I think Arkillo has worked really well thus far as a member of the group.  The Sinestro Corps is the hardest group to handle in a logical way a they are truly villains as opposed to the members of the other Corps.  Keeping Arkillo makes sense as they have done the most to establish him as a character with some morality, even when he appeared so evil during some of the crossovers like Sinestro Corps War.

Orange
This is sort of the same concept as the Red Lanterns.  Glomulus was a surprisingly endearing character for never really talking and for just being a construct of Larfleeze.  Larfleeze on the other hand has proven time and again to be a very entertaining character due to his ridiculous level of greed (for instance being greedy of Santa Claus on one occasion.)  Like Red this is an upgrade though I will be sorry to see the old character go.

Indigo
I am not sure at the moment why the Indigo Tribe is not being represented.  Likely it has something to  do with the Secrets of the Indigo Tribe story arc that took place in Green Lantern.  That having been said I think Munk has said less than 50 words in the series thus far, 75% of which were probably Nok.  I am sure either that the Indigo can be better used as a plot device or a more personable character.

Blue
This is the one that I am least sure about.  I realize that they have developed his friendship with Arkillo to a certain degree, but what I did like about the original group was that there was a decent male to female ratio (5 to 2 is pretty good by comic book team standards).  I think really it would bot be a huge loss to not see Saint Walker and instead to see an original female character from the Blue Lanterns.

@lykopis: I think zero issues are being used as a relaunch for some series and other not.  I think this title is getting a relaunch though in general term as it is losing 4 members and gaining three.  Green Lantern has been putting out some pretty interesting stories.  Red Lanterns started off really well and then went downhill, and New Guardians has been consistently fun but not much else.  Carol is pretty fun, because she was an unwilling villain for so long.

I have every issue of the new 52 but have not read anything outside of Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey (which has been cancelled). So - still the noob in all things DC, is this zero idea a relaunch of some sort? You mention you've dropped Green Lanterns Corps - so which exactly do I keep my eye on? I love your breakdown of each colour and can see myself really getting into Carol's character.

When was it announced that BoP was cancelled?

Oh gosh, that was one of the worst series. -_-

Seriously, offing Gavril, and grievously injuring all the other interesting members of the team (Fire, Ice, Vixen), what were they thinking? And what the heck did they do to Booster Gold?

@Icarusflies: I did like the original lineup for JLI because it was half female though (or nearly half, it might have been 5 to 4)

gah --- no no, not cancelling BoP, I meant Voodoo.

O_O

Oh thank goodness.

Well, I mean, that sucks for Voodoo, but that title was doomed when they switch creators and the new creators were like "nah, we're gonna take that character you've fallen in love with and make her the villain. Here's a totally different version of that character for you to root for!"

@lykopis@fodigg: Yes I will miss Voodoo, I read the last issue on the same day the WW/SM romance was announced.  A dark day for me in the history of DC.

@fodigg: Anyway the other version of Voodoo took a bit of getting used to, but she got pretty endearing by the end.

@fodigg: Agreed. It started out great, but it was difficult to want to support it after they lobotomised her character.

They did seem to try for some sort of reconciliation where the two were "sisters" at the end, but come on. How do you walk back having your hero protagonist slaughter her supporting cast in cold blood? It just...didn't work for me.

@fodigg: I like the female secret agent aspect though, outside of Danger Girl where else do you get that (Sharon Carter?).  Also the sci fi aspect was starting to ramp up, and I like the sci fi.

It seemed more super-commando to me than secret agent. The black razors were pretty much your typical space marines, in space, fighting aliens.

@fodigg: Well that is what the Danger Girls do as well, except for the outer space parts, and their aliens are usually more like Nazis.

I actually have some issue with this new lineup. It has too many corps leaders on it: Carol, Atrocitus and Larfleeze (Arkillo is the only Yellow Lantern, and Saint Walker isn't officially the leader of the Blues, plus these two were there already anyways). How is Kyle supposed to lead a team of people who in turn lead the other corps? Does he indirectly control all the lanterns then?

Also, species representation is now uneven, in favour of humans. One of the things that drew me to this title was that it had seven different lanterns from their respective parts of the spectrum, and also from different parts of space. It seems like this book is now going back to DC's traditional Earth-centrism.

@Prodigy P: I would say it is a bit more Earth centric, but Carol is a pretty compelling character.  The leaders are all there too, but a big event is coming so maybe they will need to be.  Also who say Kyle is leading them?  He never really led them yet.

True, true. I agree that could be a good reason. Darn, and you're kinda about Kyle. When I think about it the team hasn't really had anything of a leader so far.

I really don't know much about Carol. I saw her in Brightest Day, and in New Guardians #0. She better be worth the extra human-ness on the team.

I liked Fatality too bad she's gone, never much cared for Carol. This book should have another female character...

The Sinestro Corps is the hardest group to handle in a logical way a they are truly villains as opposed to the members of the other Corps.

I think/hope Yellow Lanterns get a remake, which could explain the whole destruction of the corps. When they were created, I don't think the concept of several corps was in mind, so they were created with the concept of Yellow = bad, green = good. If you notice, every corps but maybe blue (especially, as of late, "green") have been shown to have aspects of questionable morality either in current or past dealings

But at the beginning of DCnU DC also showed a yellow lantern using his powers on those who caused fear on others before he lost his ring and got killed. They also showed that the "rogue" yellow lanterns seemed to go against Sinestro's wishes in their continued terrorization of his planet. I think DC is trying to "gray" the line between good/evil among the corps (even their newest human green lantern makes me consider this) to erase the concept of "good corps" and "bad corps".

Sinestro has always tried to portray his actions as being for the greater good (like getting the guardians to revise their "no killing rule" to make criminals fear the Green Lanterns again.

Akrillo is part of this new transformation and I'm hoping Sinestro is too. A corps that punishes criminals by feeding on their victims fears and using that power to bring forth the criminal's fears would have a certain poetic justice, and be on the same concept of the red lanterns. Besides with 7 corps (technically 9) it does not make as much sense to promote the Green vs yellow concept as much as it did in the past.
