My Eyes Are Up Here

Interestingly enough this same phrase showed up twice this month in comics.  I don’t have much to say about the application of the phrase itself.  In the one case Charlotte Rivers is saying it to a man she is trying to seduce which makes little sense.  In the other case Cassandra is saying it to Tim when he quite clearly wasn’t looking at her breasts (in which case if it were me I would be prone to apologize.)  What I really think is worth saying about this though is that it has more or less achieved the status of a cliché.  A few months ago when the female fans of comics were trying to make it known that there should be more females among the creative teams at DC and for comics in general, this is a case of what they were talking about (or at least this is what I was talking about.)  Having only male writers means that women are often written without any real personality, rather just exemplifying clichéd stereotypes.  I think they can do better.

All this comment does is bring more attention to the female comic characters breasts. It is just another way of putting fan-service in comics and the writers/artists saying, "look at all the great fan-service in this issue..lets make sure everyone notices?" and adds this line so even readers who would not normally be prone to noticing such reading the issue and taking note of the overly exaggerated figures are forced to.

I love the exchange from MUA between Deadpool and Black Widow that starts out following that pattern, and then it turns out he was talking about her teeth.

Honestly it didn't bring my attention to Cassie's breasts at all. It did bring my attention to those arms though they are ripped and I thought it was a nice change of pace from the normal physically strong females that look like twigs that can break if they got hit to hard.

I found it actually really weird when Cassie said it. I almost felt like she was saying to embarrass Tim or something, but it didn't really come across. As a character it makes her seem like she's had problems with guys before and expects the worst from them. But like the OP said, it would be a normal reaction for her to apologize for her assumptions. This makes her seem like less of a strong female and more of a presumptuous one is utterly sexist in her own right. It's like it was written just to jazz up some sense of romantic tension between the two. In any case it's a weak line overall and I'd like to see less of it in all mediums. It's cliche and never serves to create a real character.

Yes and no. Look at Wonder Girl's art. You can't even really see the items in question and she's drawn with very strong looking arms. I like the art there.

I think the line is cliche, and you're probably onto something generally, but in her case I think it was acceptable.

Edit: Then again, that might have been the artist's choice and not the writer's choice. One artist makes Lobdell look good, the other really, really bad.

As for the OP, these are both cases of pretty weak writing. Now while I don't know the exact context of the two particular scenes displayed I can guess there isn't much to draw from either of them. I'm not opposed to sexy female characters and verbal depictions of those sexy female characters, just like I'm not opposed to sexy male characters and the verbal depiction of their sexiness. But I can't stand it when sex does not contribute to the story or characters as a whole and only serves to be detrimental to our collective appreciation of comics. The writers have to be able to distinguish between sex for sex's sake and sex for art's sake.

I don't know for me I think sex for sex sake is can be ok with certain people.

I don't always need love and I certainly never done it for art reasons. :p

If women wear tight shirts and/or cleavage, a man is going to look. Call me sexist if you like, it's the simple truth for most men.

Just like most women will watch when there's a hot guy walking by with tight jeans. It's human nature.

Now, there is a difference between staring and giving a look. I'll give you that. But i don't see anything wrong with the sentence, it's being used in all kinds of media. Is it cliché? Sure. But cliché can be fun, just like an action movie where there a hundreds of guns being fired and the hero never gets hit. Don't take it so seriously.

It's the same as the phrase, 'is there a ..... in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?'. I'm a guy, i don't feel objectified by that remark.

I agree the writers could come up with some wittier ways of doing it, but they are just drawing attention... Cassandra does disturb me though.. how old is she meant to be now? lol

@RazzaTazz: I agree completely, it makes me cringe when i read that line. It seems to be written by guys that assume that is how women react to being looked at, when in reality I think as long as it's just an appreciative glance and not some guy standing their staring with his tounge hanging out, the women might be a bit flattered or just indifferent to the attention. I have never once heard a women say that line in real life, only in films, tv, comics, etc.

I would say in terms of the entire panel, that her statement afterwards is worse, that a 17 or 18 year old would have to tell that her breasts are real, but I guess it is a sad fact of the world we live in.

Women who expose their breats shouldn't complain when men look. Wear a sweatshirt and a sports bra and *poof* problem solved. If I was walking around exposing my scrotum (not the whole thing just the very bottom of it) I think people would look.

Lets be honest though, as many times as we do look it is a surprise that we do not hear this more in real life, but yeah it is the artists lame attempt at Levity....and they both had the clever idea the same month...
