Doric, Ionic and Corinthian

I am in a bit of a departure away from deeper well thought out posts after getting more busy with studying.  After reviewing the Wonder Woman back issues this weekend and checking out some other artwork of Paradise Island, I kind of got interested in the architecture of the place.  I know that this is highly subjective because there is no edict saying "Paradise Island must be drawn this way" and really I am not sure if there has ever been even a comprehensive map of the island drawn by any comic book artists.  What I did notice is that the columns are usually depicted in a relatively uniform way, with an elaborate frieze (the highest part) and a mostly bare base (the bottom part).  This would seem to be a mix of Ionic/Corinthian (Corinthian is just a more elaborate version of Ionic) at the top with Doric at the bottom.  I guess it is completely reasonable to assume that in their history that the Amazons have developed their own style, but I think this is more a case of comic book artists drawing what they think looks the coolest without doing their homework first.

lol This thread makes me happy! Classical Studies, and Art History I was very fond of and they treated me well.  
 
I actually look forward to the day I can redesign some columns with a few unorthodox modifications to suit what superhumans should be able to accomplish...

I  was actually wondering if those were historically correct , as I read the new  Wonder Woman. You saved me some research time. ;D I often also wonder about the general accurateness of the god wonder woman interacts with...>.> (I am pretty sure most accounts with the gods they are inaccurately portrayed, but I will not know for sure until I confirm it...)

@RazzaTazz:  Columns and their representation in the medium of comics is troubling subject for me, on one hand, in one sense, these columns are about the aesthetic, and they can be quite detailed and fine, yet in comics, details are often loss for the sake of practicalities. You know what my theory is? Artists are lazy. We concentrate too much on characters heads, and details at the top. Its where the eye line is drawn. These columns have faces and they are the capitals. The bases however are well, are our feet, and if you have ever read a Rob Liefeld comic, you know, feet sometimes don't even need to be drawn! In this medium of comics. Feet and foot ware are stylized or important enough, unless they are attached to characters who are prone to kicking high. How high? Head level high. 
 
*Pulls out a chair for RazzaTazz* I know how distressing this might mean for you, I mean, if you don't draw the feet, then how can we see the characters shoes? We can't, if the characters feet are on panel, its extremely difficult for the artist to incorporate shoes on to the page, unless the character is wearing the footwear around their necks, or on their ears like Galactus.  
 
In any case, I suppose artists just don't feel they need to have a detailed base on a column, especially if they have already detailed and given value and beauty to the top of the column. The bottom of the panel, is a ugly hole of depravity, well, that is unless, your enthusiastic about shoes, or worse/better yet feet! Yet as many of your threads detailing the misogynistic nature of all men, especially the males, we know that they won't, the male artist, care for the subject for shoes and their places in comics. So its not just the bases of the columns that are neglected, but I suspect you already know this.

@thehummingbird:  We are not depicted well at all. In real life we are much stronger and polite. We are not as snobby or pretentious either. Comics tend to generalize us, its unfair, but hey, we deal.

No, us overly intellectuals...We were quite tormented by the modern media. Have you ever heard or seen kids programming? They are our greatest enemy, constantly putting us down. I believe a show called brace face constantly made attacks on my kind....It had a short run though because of thematics...

Aside from thehummingbird being potentially stereotyped and generalized? You seek to offer me a challenge I see? I feel I am up for it. This famous Haile Selassie quote sums it up, pretty well; "Misguided artists sometimes depict misguided pillars. Some of my ancestors were columns. How can I colomize myself? This idolized Rastafari figure was very found of columns you see, I have no doubt he would support my stance as detailed above *points up*

The combination of capitals and bases isn't so bothersome as is the fact that artists leave them WHITE.  They should covered in more colorful paint than an Elizabethan 'actress.'

Normally, this is the sort of thing that would wind me up.  But it's like you said, no-one has ever laid down the stylistic ground rules for this fictional place.

I think there is a mix of styles as you stated in the article. 
 
Although on WW's left (our right) the temple looks Corinthian, I think the one right behind her is of Doric order. An easy way to tell if its Doric is that it has no base (which we can't actually see) but also that the frieze (that bar thing above the pillars) is not continuous. Notice that it looks more like square windows.
