How about this then? What say we apply the same things that prove that Santa Claus, Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy don't exist to the idea of a god? Santa doesn't exist because we know we are the ones who purchase and then lace the presents under the tree -- hide the chocolate eggs in the garden --- and replace the tooth with money. Sooooo --- why don't we stop giving money to our churches, stop going to our doctors when ill? No more blood donations, or silly things like that. We'll just leave it be and let a god take over and do the job we don't need to do for him since you know --- he/she/it can do it themselves without our assistance like we do do Santa Claus and his ilk.
The comparison is fair. I appreciate some don't like it -- but I don't apologize for the offence they might feel as that is on them and not me. Maybe the next time I hear someone tell me that it was "god's will" that a young child died horrifically and needlessly, I can apply the same reasoning and comfort myself that at least Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy might have given that same child some pleasure during the short life that "god" deemed to end.
Oh -- and that offence is on me though. Should I get upset everytime says to me "put your trust in god" because he doesn't exist? Should people apologize to me or avoid making comments along those lines because I feel similar as they do in that I feel its considered foolish to believe in things that do not exist? The argument that everyone knows that my Great Trio does not exist isn't true by the way. Some children believe they do. Only --- some grow up and realize it was just some characters thought up to provide comfort and joy. You know --- like some other things in life that require leaps of faith.
You realize that the idea of Santa Claus is based primarily on someone who did in fact exist at one point. And that while that person may not have had elves.. the basics as in giving gifts, was true. St. Nic handed them to the poor and most famously gave dowries to three daughters of a prostitute. So just saying... the whole God is just as real as Santa Claus is pretty lousy argument. =) **pokes wolf with stick** rawr.
(please note that the following comment is strictly intended forLykopis and has underlying meaning =) ) And not for anything, your little comparison for a horrific death? You know what, things happen. People can say it was God's Will or whatever they want, the truth of the matter is we DON'T KNOW WHY. It just freaking happened. And yea, you SHOULD apply that logic. Because you should CELEBRATE that they had joys in their life and stop getting hung up in grief. And that's coming from me Lyko.
Your sarcasm is MUCH appreciated m'dear =)
