Shouldn’t the X-Men students do more post Schism?

No Caption Provided

Last year in 2011, X-Men Schism happened and it caused a great divide among the X-Men which was split up between Cyclops’ team, the blue team, which consists of “Uncanny X-Men,” “Generation Hope (now canceled),” “New Mutants” and “X-Men” and Wolverine’s team, the gold team, which consists of “X-Men Legacy,” “Wolverine and the X-Men,” “X-Factor,” and “Uncanny X-Force.”   Not only are the main X-Men split up, but the students are also split up and some of the students have stayed on Utopia with Cyclops while the other half of the students decided to go with Wolverine at the new school.   So the big question here is, shouldn’t the students be more involved in the decisions being made after Schism?

No Caption Provided

When I mentioned the young X-Men or the X-Men students, I mean the cast from the “New X-Men” which includes Surge, Dust, X-23, Hellion, Rockslide, The Stepford Cuckoos, Armor, Anole and many others.   When the split between the X-Men started up, it was over whether or not children should be soldiers or not and Cyclops wanted the children to fight for the safety of mutant kind while Wolverine wanted the children to have a normal childhood.   So, the students who wanted a normal childhood left to stay at Wolverine’s school while the students who wanted to help Cyclops fight for mutant kind stayed on Utopia.   Even though the students chose the sides they wanted to be with and they made their choices very clear, it seems like they just easily accepted the situation at hand without talking about whether or not there would be consequences in splitting up the team.   Some of the more peaceful students probably would not want the split to happen and would have alerted the older X-Men about this situation and how it is not a good idea to split up the team in the first place.   Also, this has been pointed out before, but many friendships were broken when this event happened and it is unknown at this point whether or not the X-Men or the students in this case will ever come back together again.

No Caption Provided

In the recent event, “Avengers vs. X-Men,” the Phoenix Force is meant to take on Hope Summers as its next host.   Cyclops wanted to use the powers of the Phoenix Force to harness it and use it to save mutant kind.   However, the other X-Men are a bit skeptical about this and they said that the Phoenix Force is difficult to control and that Hope Summers should make the decision about what to do with the Phoenix Force.   This situation may not be directly related to Schism, but it does involve how the younger X-Men do not have much involvement in the decisions that the adults are making lately.   Hope Summers is obviously upset at not being able to have a say in the matter (while also being upset that Cyclops is not telling her much about the Phoenix Force) and we must wonder if Cyclops could at least allow Hope a choice in the matter instead of assuming that he cannot tell everything that Hope needs to know about the Phoenix Force so she could find a way to control it.

In my personal opinion, I think that the students should be more involved in the decisions that the adults are making since this involves their future too.   The New X-Men have been in enough tough situations (the bus incident is one that they will never forget) and they have been trained for situations where they have to defend themselves against any threat, which is what they are in the middle of.   Sure, they are young and they might not be ready to handle such extreme situations, but since they have been trained enough to deal with these situations, they should be able to voice their concerns about the current structure of the X-Men team and how they could try to work as a team to fix the situation they are in.   Also, if Schism was about dealing with whether or not the students should be soldiers or be regular children, then the students should be the ones who decide the outcome of Schism since it is their future that is being affected here.   If the students disagree with the idea about the X-Men splitting up, then they should have the freedom to create their own teams that can take care of any business regarding the current state of the mutant population.

So what do you think?   Do you think that the X-Men students should have a say in the matter or do you think they were wise to stay with the older X-Men?

@Rabbitearsblog:

They did. That's why some of them are on Utopia and some are not. It's the reason that X-23 is at Avengers Academy and Jubilee is on Utopia even though she's buddies with Wolverine. The only two who seemingly had no say were Kid Omega and Idie.

@Rabbitearsblog: What's worse is there was never a third option for the children. I know Scott said you could go solo and do your own thing, but that really wasn't an option for the kids.

@Nudeviking: She was already hanging with the AA before Schism, and she's a clone of Wolverine. That's why. She got special treatment.

I agree. Sure the students did make the decisions to go where they wanted, but it just seems like it's either Cyclops or Wolverine's team you have to go to. No other options.

Which is why I am pissed that Xavier didn't do anything beyond go to Westchester and say good luck. He should have been the third option.

And what would have been a good third option? The mentors would not compromise for each other. Staying as one is not an option. So it has to be either side. And giving them a third faction would just lead to a greater divide. Not to mention the young usually has got no real idea of what is really best or worst given that they get no guidance.

If there were a third option like go solo or form another splinter team dedicated to only themselves... I defiantly feel like characters like: Dust, Gentle, Dazzler, etc would follow it!!

@ssejllenrad: This is an argument that the adult wanted. The kids had to deal with the divide they put upon them. There should have been the option that the kids don't do anything, but go somewhere else while the adult finish their pissing match. Xavier should have done more to help the children as it is the children who suffered the most because of the stupidity of both sides.

I'm not sure what they can do. Any students that went back to westchester are there because they don't want to be child soldiers. The ones that stayed, like four, are on the street team I believe.

Why isnt there a single x-book focusing on the Kids alone. You have like 6 wolverine books, why isn't their one focusing on the kids? X-men legacy was supposed to be about the kids, and yet, they're used for background props. They get like one or two lines and they're usefulness has been served. Instead we get Rogue talking about her bf problems. In Wolverine and the x-men the focus is on SOME of the kids. Idie, Quentin, Kid Gladiator, Broo, and Genesis. But even then they're not really the focus and are more or less along for the ride when the adults do something. And then the rest of the school gets ignored. Why not a rotating roster of kids so everyone gets time to shine? Why not an entire book dedicated to the kids on utopia and jeans greys school? Is that really too much to ask for? Schism was caused because of what to do with these kids, and yet we dont get to see whats going on from their point of view.

Definitely think there should be a book focused on the students/younger members of the X-Men. Annoying how there needed to be a divide at all -- but then again, where else are they going to go? Considering they are still considered minors, how about the parents? Are they legal wards of the Utopian State? So then --- who is in charge? Who is responsible for them?

It would be interesting to see that explored, a bit of a wasted opportunity.

I agree with all this. I don't understand why there are no books regarding about how the young x-men are handling this situation. This event was started up because it was about the kids' safety (even though this came out of the blue) so there should be more exposure on the younger x-men more than ever.

Sadly Marvel's not interested in pushing any of the Academy X/New X-Men kids. It's all been about Generation Hope and the newer students in WaTXM (I do like the WaTXM students, to be fair).

I wish Hellion, Surge, Rockslide, Mercury, Dust, Anole, Prodigy etc would go all 90s X-Force and road trip it up. I mean, they're mostly too old to be in school now anyway.

Exactly! I really wanted to see a New X-Men book or a young X-Men book that focused more on the kids just being away from the X-Men and doing things on their own. It would be nice to see what the New X-Men could do when they are on their own.

Considering it has a writer who only is on one issue and then goes to Loeb, I think it's a safe bet to say it's dealing with the past. As it says After M-Day, and Untold tale.

I'm sure it would sell more than the crap that is the current New Mutants series.

Yeah, hopefully there will be better writers for the series.

One would hope.

Side-note: Elixir will be featured in Wolverine 308 in July.

That's great news! I wonder what they are planning for him?

Based on the solicits though it sounds like it is a flashback story.

Oh, so it's not like he's going to be involved in the current events?

Considering it has a writer who only is on one issue and then goes to Loeb, I think it's a safe bet to say it's dealing with the past. As it says After M-Day, and Untold tale.

WOLVERINE #309

IVAN BRANDON (w) • RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE & JASON LATOUR (a)

Cover by ESAD RIBIC

• An untold tale of the Wolverine!

• Wolverine takes Elixir under his wing

• After M-Day, not all depowered mutants found their way in the world, and one of them comes back for Wolverine 40 PGS./Parental Advisory …$4.99

Hmmm...sounds interesting...

I'm just tired of Wolverine being a mentor to kids. It just keeps growing in numbers.

Sadly Marvel's not interested in pushing any of the Academy X/New X-Men kids. It's all been about Generation Hope and the newer students in WaTXM (I do like the WaTXM students, to be fair).

Yea, I'm sure there is a list of people who could be a solid mentor, but are overshadowed by a furry man with claws.

I agree, it does sound like a flashback, but maybe it's set after Necrosha. We haven't seen Elixir since then.

Colossus would be a terrible, terrible mentor.

@John Valentine: it states after M-Day so I think it would be before Necrosha if anything, but that's the feeling I got from just the solicit.

So? It could be any time up to now. But with Elixir it's more likely to be during X-Force or just after.

I don't think one issue is enough to deal with him post Necrosha then shelve it to go and do Sabertooth Reborn the following issue. Their time together during X-Force makes the most sense.

That could be quite easily done in one issue, but, yes, an untold X-Force story could happen too.

This is Marvel where they follow the Bendis method: If it can be solved in four issues or less, tack on another issue.

Ha, yep, I read that comment in the Jeph Loeb \Revolution' interview.

Still, I'd much rather the Elixir story be something other than an X-Force tale. Would rather a gap-filler/catch-up one shot.

@John Valentine: Lol oh Loeb, where did your writing skill go?

I would as well, but it seems like every time someone answers about Elixir, they say he's not available or Ask the X-Staff.

Yea, I know when people asked Gillen about Elixir, he gave those answers. Seems like they either have a plan or have too much currently to deal with him.

Oh yeah, but I would like it if the writers just gave a little hint about their plans with Elixir rather than just said, wait and see.

Spoilers are bad for business. Hence why they always say no comment, wait and see, or I can't say anything about it.
