Shouldn’t the X-Men students do more post Schism?

Last year in 2011, X-Men Schism happened and it caused a great divide among the X-Men which was split up between Cyclops’ team, the blue team, which consists of “Uncanny X-Men,” “Generation Hope (now canceled),” “New Mutants” and “X-Men” and Wolverine’s team, the gold team, which consists of “X-Men Legacy,” “Wolverine and the X-Men,” “X-Factor,” and “Uncanny X-Force.”   Not only are the main X-Men split up, but the students are also split up and some of the students have stayed on Utopia with Cyclops while the other half of the students decided to go with Wolverine at the new school.   So the big question here is, shouldn’t the students be more involved in the decisions being made after Schism?

When I mentioned the young X-Men or the X-Men students, I mean the cast from the “New X-Men” which includes Surge, Dust, X-23, Hellion, Rockslide, The Stepford Cuckoos, Armor, Anole and many others.   When the split between the X-Men started up, it was over whether or not children should be soldiers or not and Cyclops wanted the children to fight for the safety of mutant kind while Wolverine wanted the children to have a normal childhood.   So, the students who wanted a normal childhood left to stay at Wolverine’s school while the students who wanted to help Cyclops fight for mutant kind stayed on Utopia.   Even though the students chose the sides they wanted to be with and they made their choices very clear, it seems like they just easily accepted the situation at hand without talking about whether or not there would be consequences in splitting up the team.   Some of the more peaceful students probably would not want the split to happen and would have alerted the older X-Men about this situation and how it is not a good idea to split up the team in the first place.   Also, this has been pointed out before, but many friendships were broken when this event happened and it is unknown at this point whether or not the X-Men or the students in this case will ever come back together again.

In the recent event, “Avengers vs. X-Men,” the Phoenix Force is meant to take on Hope Summers as its next host.   Cyclops wanted to use the powers of the Phoenix Force to harness it and use it to save mutant kind.   However, the other X-Men are a bit skeptical about this and they said that the Phoenix Force is difficult to control and that Hope Summers should make the decision about what to do with the Phoenix Force.   This situation may not be directly related to Schism, but it does involve how the younger X-Men do not have much involvement in the decisions that the adults are making lately.   Hope Summers is obviously upset at not being able to have a say in the matter (while also being upset that Cyclops is not telling her much about the Phoenix Force) and we must wonder if Cyclops could at least allow Hope a choice in the matter instead of assuming that he cannot tell everything that Hope needs to know about the Phoenix Force so she could find a way to control it.

In my personal opinion, I think that the students should be more involved in the decisions that the adults are making since this involves their future too.   The New X-Men have been in enough tough situations (the bus incident is one that they will never forget) and they have been trained for situations where they have to defend themselves against any threat, which is what they are in the middle of.   Sure, they are young and they might not be ready to handle such extreme situations, but since they have been trained enough to deal with these situations, they should be able to voice their concerns about the current structure of the X-Men team and how they could try to work as a team to fix the situation they are in.   Also, if Schism was about dealing with whether or not the students should be soldiers or be regular children, then the students should be the ones who decide the outcome of Schism since it is their future that is being affected here.   If the students disagree with the idea about the X-Men splitting up, then they should have the freedom to create their own teams that can take care of any business regarding the current state of the mutant population.

So what do you think?   Do you think that the X-Men students should have a say in the matter or do you think they were wise to stay with the older X-Men?

Should Superheroes be treated with more respect?

Since the beginning of superhero comics, superheroes have always put their lives on the line to protect innocent people from any harm that comes their way.   So, how come that even though most superheroes have often saved the world numerous times before and again, the public sometimes still view them as threats or don’t appreciate their heroic efforts?

One of the most famous examples of superheroes often being mistreated by the public is through the X-Men, as they are superheroes who constantly try to protect the public from strong enemies but they are often mistreated because they are mutants.   So one of the reasons why it’s possible that the public might dislike superheroes is because they have greater powers than a regular human being and it could be out of spite or prejudice for the superheroes.

Marvel Fanfare # 25

Another reason why the public might not show superheroes with much respect is because sometimes whenever the superhero does something wrong, then the public might take a negative view at the superhero.   For example, when Tony Stark (Iron Man) started having drinking problems, the public immediately considered him to not be in any condition to continue being Iron Man; for fear that he might endanger many lives in his drunken state.

So, the question is, should superheroes be treated with more respect?   I personally think that they should be treated with more respect.   Superheroes not only have saved the world countless times, but they ended up sacrificing their personal needs and their lives to save the world from any harm, which means that they saved the world because they want to protect the world and not do it for selfish reasons.   Yes, superheroes will make mistakes, but they are human also and they are also prone to having emotional moments where they seem like they are not capable of protecting the world if they are emotionally scarred by any event that happens during their lives.   One of the problems that sometimes causes the public to mistreat superheroes if they make mistakes is that they considered superheroes to be able to accomplished anything when the situation calls for it and for superheroes who are just starting out, they might not get job done right the first time since it’s their first time, so the public needs to understand this notion from the superheroes.

So what do you think? Do you think that Superheroes needed to be treated with respect or that the public should continue to criticize them to make them better at their jobs?

Should the X-Men have bases in other countries?

For many years, the X-Men’s goal was to not only fight various villains who threatened the world, but to also have humanity see them as their equals, therefore prevent the prejudice that human kind puts upon them. However, if Professor Xavier’s dream is to have mutants and humans live in peace and harmony together, shouldn’t there be other bases for the X-Men in other countries?

For the majority of the X-Men comics, the X-Men’s base is always located in the United States and while there is nothing wrong with that, we barely see any kind of base that resembles the X-Men’s base in the United States in other countries. It is true that the X-Men have tried to relate the issues of mutant hate towards other countries, like for example, in the earlier run of the “Ultimate X-Men” comics by Mark Millar, Professor Xavier and his students went on a World Tour promoting Professor Xavier’s book on improving mutant and human relationships, however, there was barely any talk about the X-Men having other bases in other countries.

There were some instances where the X-Men did sort of have a base in other countries and probably the two most recognizable bases they sort of had was the one in Australia and the team “Excalibur.” The team “Excalibur” had mutant members like Captain Britain and Meggan and they were a superhero team that had their base in Britain. The X-Men also briefly had a base in Australia when the world believed them to be dead.

So in this case, if Professor Xavier wanted to fulfill his dream of promoting peace between the mutant and human population, would it make more sense to have their bases in other countries? Racism and prejudice is a problem that is not only associated with the United States, but is also associated around the world and the X-Men stories need to show more problems that face the X-Men from a worldwide view. There were many cases where mutants also face discrimination in other countries, so even if the X-Men completed their goal of maintaining human and mutant relationships in the United States, there are still other countries that would still discriminate mutants and there needs to be other X-Men who also believe in Professor Xavier’s dreams, but are from other countries. Maybe Colossus could lead an X-Men team in Russia or Nightcrawler could lead an X-Men team in Germany or maybe the X-Men could recruit their members in Australia or Storm could lead an X-Men team in Africa. The possibilities are endless and if the X-Men can have other bases in other countries while still supporting Professor Xavier’s dreams, then their goals in maintaining good human and mutant relationships can be achieved more efficiently.

So what do you think? Do you think that the X-Men should have their base in other countries also or should they remain in the United States?

What is the fate of Colossus?

Ever since the events “Fear Itself” and “Schism,” everything has changed for the X-Men and some has affected many of the members in negative ways.   One of the X-Men members who were affected the most was Colossus, who takes on the powers of the Cyttorak and becomes the next Juggernaut.   So, now that the popular gentle Russian giant now possesses an evil power, what will become of him in the future?

So far, it is shown that Colossus has full control of his new powers, while his new powers is making him much stronger than ever.   However, because the powers that Colossus possesses are very destructive, Colossus is now becoming more aggressive whenever he digs into his new powers, although he still tries to hold on to his true self as best as he can.   So with the current state of his new powers, what would happen to Colossus if he lost control of his powers and he goes on a rampage?

One possibility is that he might take his own life to save the people he cares about if his powers go out of control.   This had happened before when Colossus sacrificed his own life to save the mutant race from the legacy virus after his sister Magik died from the virus early on.   If Colossus discovers that his powers are becoming so destructive that he can’t control his powers at all, then it’s a possibility that he might take his own life to save everyone from the destructive powers he has possessed, just like Jean Grey had done when she couldn't control her Dark Phoenix powers and decided to sacrifice herself to save the world from her destructive powers.

HOWEVER, there is another option though and it might be a long shot, but maybe Colossus doesn’t have to die if he lost control of his powers.   Maybe the conclusion of the story could be set up where Colossus fights the powers of the Cyttorak and gains an upper hand over his powers, however, he still needs more training with his powers, so  he would need to be with someone who knows how to handle the darker side of any kind of power. Probably the best solution in having Colossus deal with his new powers is through a  miniseries about Colossus and his sister Magik going away from the X-Men for awhile and train Colossus in honing his new powers. This would be a great way to generate more stories about Colossus and we would be able to get a much deeper characterization of his character when he is dealing with these new powers such as how the powers affect him emotionally and how he might possibly grow as a character through this ordeal.  As long as there are good writers such as Joss Whedon, Rick Remender, Grant Morrison and other good writers that can take this character seriously and go into depth with his inner struggles in controlling such a destructive power and develop a more closer relationship with his sister Magik, then a miniseries staring him and his sister Magik would be a great thing for both their characters and the stories involving them
.
So what would be the fate of Colossus in the future? Well, since it’s too early to tell, we can’t really say what’s in store for Colossus or anyone else for that matter, but I personally hope that Marvel would allow Colossus to have his own miniseries that has him dealing with his new powers rather than kill him off if his powers go out of control because in killing him, the deeper characterization of Colossus might be lost since he might go through the same routine he has been going through his entire life again.  There are so many new opportunities to expand more on Colossus’ character and killing him off again would not do much to change his character or have him learn from his mistakes or actions.

So what do you think? Do you think that Colossus should die once he loses control of his powers or do you think that there should be more stories of him trying to control his powers?

Is it time for a new villain in the X-Men universe?

Over the years, the X-Men have faced many villains that threatened harm on humanity.   Some of the villains that the X-Men have faced over the years became legendary in the X-Men mythos and they included Magneto, the Hellfire Club, Mr. Sinister and many, many more!   Currently however, it seems that most of the X-villains are siding with the X-Men and most of the villains nowadays that the X-Men face are basically alternate versions of older villain groups.

Recently, most of the newer villains that the X-Men have faced were mainly alternate versions of the older villain groups.   Some popular examples of this were the Sisterhood of Mutants which was led by Madeline Pryor and it mirrors the Brotherhood of Mutants and most recently, the Hellfire Club kids which mirrors the original Hellfire Club, but is mainly composed of kids.   Even though they were threats to the X-Men, it seems like their goals are sort of one sided and they were just there to cause trouble for the X-Men.

Probably the X-Men’s greatest enemy of all time was Magneto.   Magneto was not only the X-Men’s greatest foe because he caused mass destruction everywhere he goes, but he was against Professor Xavier’s dream of bringing mutants and humans together.   The goal of the X-Men was that they fight any kind of threats that threatens humanity and try to prove to the human population that they are the good guys.   Magneto however, always believed that mutants were far superior to humans and he believed that the human race should be eliminated.   Also, his back story on his experiences during the Holocaust clearly defined his character and his beliefs about mutants being more superior to humans.   Since then, Magneto has always gave the X-Men a hard time, until recently when he joined Cyclops’ team in fighting threats against the mutant population.

Recently however, Mr. Sinister has come back and gave the X-Men a hard time; however, Mr. Sinister was an older villain who was a threat to the X-Men before in the past.   So, is it time now to have a newer villain who was never thought of before to come and attack the X-Men?

I personally think that the X-Men need a newer villain to challenge them since the majority of the best villains are now working with the X-Men. Also, I think a new villain would be better suited for the current situation that the X-Men are now facing since now the X-Men has to deal with the mutant population dwindling due to the events of “House of M.”   There needs to be a villain who wants to destroy the mutant race and who has convincing motives for doing so, such as the new villain loathes the mutant race because maybe the villain is a mutant and he or she hated the way that he or she was treated because of that.   Or, the new villain could be like William Stryker, who was also another memorable villain, meaning that the villain could be a human being (even though I really want the X-Men to have more human allies in the future) who wants to take advantage of the mutants’ current situation and destroy the entire race by creating a virus or something like that to kill them. Villains like Magneto were memorable in the X-Men universe because they went against what the heroes believed in and at the time that Magneto was the villain, he was against the idea of humans and mutants coexisting with each other which was what Professor Xavier wanted.   The newer villains need a purpose to go against what the X-Men are trying to do right now and that is saving the mutant race from extinction.

So what do you think? Do you think that the X-Men need a new and original villain to go against what they are trying to do right now or are you satisfied with the current villains they have now?

Chapter 5: X-Men vs. the White Ghost!

Later that night, the X-Men prepared for the ghost’s arrival by standing by the river by the Institute.

“The boy who was affected by the ghost’s powers earlier today told me that he saw the ghost come out of nowhere around the river. So, it’s possible that the ghost might come out here again to take more unsuspecting students,” said Hank.

“Well, it must know we’re out here since there’s nothing coming,” said Kitty.

“The ghost might come soon enough,” said Piotr.

All of a sudden, Kurt started to shiver, “Is it just me or is it starting to get a little cold out here?”

Slowly, a cold chill filled the air and the X-Men started to shiver fiercely. Suddenly, a large white figure come gliding through the water and starts coming towards the X-Men.

“Alright, ghost! I got my handy power neutralizer ray gun and I’m taking a--!?!”

Suddenly, the power neutralizer ray gun exploded in Hank’s hands and the X-Men looked on in shock.

The large white figure then laughed wildly and said, “FOOLS! DO YOU THINK THAT GUN WILL HELP YOU NOW?! I HAVE LEARNED THE WAYS OF YOUR SCIENTIFIC WAYS AND NOW I HAVE DISABLED THEM!”

“Not everything.”

The X-Men suddenly leaped at the ghost and started fighting it. Kitty phased through the white figure and the figure cried out in pain. Kurt teleported in front of the white figure and kicked it in the face and Hank leapt at the white figure and tackled it to the ground and quickly jumped off the figure. Suddenly, Piotr, in his steel form, grabbed a large tree and swatted the white figure with it, sending the white figure flying across the river and into the woods.

“Nice hit Peter!” yelled Hank.

“Thank you.” Said Piotr.

“Come on! The ghost might be getting away!” yelled Kitty.

The X-Men then ran into the woods and saw the ghost lying on the ground. The X-Men quietly came upon the ghost and stood around the ghost’s still body, trying to see if it was still alive…

Suddenly, the ghost opened its eyes and let out an earsplitting scream while revealing its red and skinless face towards the X-Men. The X-Men backed away from the ghost, but all of a sudden, they found the ground around them sinking in.

The ghost laughed wickedly and shouted, “HA! HA! HA! HA! NOW YOU FOOLS WILL FINALLY GET A TASTE OF REAL DEATH! DOWN TO THE PITS OF THE UNDERWORLD WITH YOU!”

Then the earth opened up and everyone including the ghost fell down into the ground and was swallowed up by the earth.

….

…..

……

There was nothing but darkness surrounding the four mutants and for a few minutes, they seem as still as death. Suddenly, Kitty awoke with a start and started looking around frantically. As Kitty started to settle down, she noticed that they were no longer near the Xavier Institute, but are in a place where the walls are dark blue and they seem to be floating on thin air. Kitty then turned towards Piotr and tried to wake him up.

“Peter! Wake up! Wake up!”

Piotr then woke up and rubbed his eyes and said, “Katya? Wh…Where are we?”

“I don’t know, but it feels like we just fallen into some kind of weird space portal… or something like that. Let’s wake the others,” said Kitty.

Kitty and Piotr started waking up the other X-Men and the others woke up.

“What? What is this place?” asked Kurt.

“I’m not quite sure, but it seems like some kind of space time continuum of the like,” stated Hank.

“You are not in a space portal, you are hanging in limbo,” a frightening voice called out.

The X-Men all turned around and saw the white figure approaching them with its red and skinless face still exposed.

“Hey! What’s the big idea of taking us down here?” yelled Kitty.

“I wanted to show you all what it feels like to experience death. To feel fear and turmoil like I did many years ago, but you have only experienced the fear of death, not death itself,” rattled the white figure.

“You have every opportunity to kill us when you had the advantage. Why didn’t you kill us before?” asked Hank.

Suddenly, the white figure’s face started to shift and there appeared a face of a young teenage girl. The X-Men were shocked and the young teenage girl said, “Even though I wanted you all to experience death, I really wanted to tell you my entire sad and frightening story.”

The teenage ghost girl then sat down on the open air and started telling her story.

“Once long ago, I was a young and happy teenage girl. I would gossip about boys and about what was cool and what was not cool just like any ordinary teenage girl. I even went to Xavier’s School since I was a mutant. But I had very strange powers. Very dangerous powers where I could inflict harm on anybody who hurts me. Because of this power, I rarely used my powers at all, but I was still happy. But one tragic day, a fire was started in the school and even though I tried to get out of the school, I ended up being stuck inside while the fire was raging. My death was very tragic indeed as I watched my own body being burned up and the skin was peeling off my face as the fire burned through.”

The teenage ghost girl shivered and continued:

“By the time the other students and the teachers found my body, I was long dead. Forever whisked away from the living world. But sometime after my death, my body became ghostlike and even though my body was gone; my ghostly body was still able to conjure up an image of my real body, if only in a memory. Also, my powers began to grow much stronger after I died, since now I have the ability to take away people’s powers and rendered them deathless. After I came to this realization, I started to wonder around the institute and as I saw the students in the institute, I started to envy them as I thought to myself about how they could live so happily, while my life ended so abruptly. So, I started to haunt this institute, while at the same time taking away the students’ powers, so that way they could feel the sorrow I felt when I died. You cannot imagine the horror and the sadness that overwhelm me when I witness my own body being burned up and there was nothing I could do to stop that pain. You truly cannot understand the horrors of death and what it could do to you.”

“I understand,” said Piotr quietly. The other X-Men turned to look at Piotr and Piotr continued:

“You said that we do not understand what it is like to experience death. Well, I understand because not too long ago, I had experienced my own death. When the legacy virus broke out years ago and it killed my little sister, Illyana, the only way for the cure to the legacy virus to work was if a mutant sacrificed their own life to bring about the cure. I was that mutant who sacrificed his own life. I sacrificed my own life because I wanted my friends to live and not have to suffer the same fate that befallen my poor sister.”

The teenage ghost girl stared at Piotr, looking a bit confused yet touched.

“Death is frightening, especially if you witnessed your own death or you wake up after being brought back to life, only to be tortured in a secret lab. But before I died, I was happy because I knew that I have done something that would ensure my friends’ happiness, even if that means that my own life ended. You said that you had a happy life before you died, so do not let your death not bring you peace. Think about how happy you were before you died,” said Piotr smiling.

“He’s right!” said Kitty, “just because you died doesn’t mean that you never had a happy life! You had friends and family who cared about you and you were happy. That’s all that really matters in the afterlife, I think.”

“Happiness is something we always take for granted, even when we are alive. But do not take your happiness for granted. Cherished it for as long as you can,” said Kurt.

The teenage ghost girl looked at all the X-Men and said to herself, “Being happy because I had a happy life… Yes, I was happy and my friends and family are still alive. I guess I never saw that before…”

The ghost girl looked up at the sky and started to glow. The X-Men shielded their eyes from the bright light and the ghost girl said to them:

“Thank you so much for showing me what kind of life I had and for teaching me how to appreciate the life I had. Farewell.”

The ghost girl then disappeared in a white glow and was gone. The X-Men then suddenly started to fall down in space, screaming on their way down.

Chapter 6: Life and Happy Endings!

The X-Men then all fell on their backs as they hit the ground.

“Ow! Man that hurts!” yelled Kitty.

“Well, we’re lucky we didn’t land in a cactus bush or something really uncomfortable,” said Hank.

Kurt then crawled up from the ground and said, “I wonder if that ghost girl is happy in the afterlife?”

“I think she is happy, now that she knows that she had a good life before she died,” said Piotr.

“Hey Peter you were great back there!” complimented Kitty.

Piotr blushed. “Oh, um…you really think so?”

“I know so,” said Kitty.

“Ah hum…I’ll just leave you two lovebirds alone for awhile while I go to my lab and work on more inventions that won’t blow up in my face,” said Hank.

“HANK!” Piotr and Kitty both yelled embarrassedly.

“Just kidding! Well, I see you all later!” Hank said and went back to the Institute.

“Well, this was quite a strange day indeed! Us having to face a ghost and somehow make it back here in piece,” said Kurt.

“Ah, speaking of strange Kurt, you still think that mutants are strange?” said Kitty slyly.

“Oh no! Not that again!” yelped Kurt.

“Oh yes that again, my friend!” said Piotr maliciously.

“Let’s get him Piotr!” yelled Kitty.

Both Piotr and Kitty started chasing after Kurt, who transported himself atop a tree and the three X-Men started playing around with each other laughing all the way.

In the trees near the Institute, a white figure floated among the branches and smiled at the three X-Men and then disappeared in a white glow of light.
