Marvel's Strongest Heroes

No Caption Provided

This image shows Marvel's first real attempt to categorize it's heroes according to their strength levels. This was printed in the back of "Amazing Spider-Man Annual" # 15, 1981, which pre-dated (and helped inspire the "Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe" less than two years later. It seems quite inaccurate now, but back then it was pretty close. Most thought the Silver Surfer and Colossus ranked to low, but each ended up with his strength defined at a higher level when the OHOTMU came out in '83.

As of today, marvel has made many versions/updates of the Handbook, but the debates still rage; Who's stronger? Who's the better fighter? Who's more powerful? Etc. Though the editorial staff set out to give us fans answers to these questions, their subsequent inconsistencies have merely fueled the fire. Still, this was a fun chart and the Handbooks have been informative and pretty good overall (imo) as well. I thought putting it atop my list of Marvel's strongest heroes would be appropriate.

I've listed the some of the weight (in Tons) that some of these guys were stated to be able to lift.

MU = Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. The number after the apostrophe is the year that edition started being printed. The number after the colon is the Weight the character was stated to be able to lift in Tons.

If some of these characters don't have info for every edition (or any info at all), I'm still getting to it or the info hasn't yet been decided officially by Marvel.

I wish he was and he would be if it were up to me.

Marvel has made it quite clear that the Hulk is the strongest and up until recent times Hercules was (imo) always second but then Sentry came along and pushed him down to third.

I'd definitely rather have Hercules 1st or 2nd but I just don't think that would be accurate. If you look at the superheroes on this list, 3rd isn't too bad!

Translation:

I like that list, despite having few women. But Rogue is there and this is one of the strongest Marvel characters.

Response:

Thanks for liking it. I only put the women who are strong enough to be on this list, that's why there aren't as many women as men. Interestingly, Rogues base-strength alone is high enough for her to be counted among Marvel's strongest but with her ability to absorb the power(s) of others, she is able to potentially increase her strength to levels beyond almost anyone.

This list reflects the usual, fully-powered but not temporarily amped versions of these characters. With that in mind, and the respective past to present strength ratings and feats of both Hercules and Thor, I feel it's close but Hercules is slightly stronger than Thor.

So we disagree on the placement of Hercules and Thor. That's okay. :)

Thanks for checking out my list, man. Now I'll check your list out.

This is a list of heroes including some villains who reformed, or at least did so temporarily (long enough to join a recognized super-team - that's the standard I use). I know Thanos has aligned himself with heroes several times in the past but I still don't/won't/can't include him on a list of heroes.

Some would say that, but if you remember the circumstance of that battle you'll recall that Odin set it up in an intensely hot climate to give Bill, who was from/native to an intensely hot climate, an advantage.

Thor and Bill identified and discussed Bill's advantage after the fight with both agreeing it probably would have went differently in a different climate.

Very nice list, I agree with top 3.  I'm glad to see you placed Hulk at #1, so many attempt to discredit and don't give him the respect he deserves. I think people are just plain sick of hearing that Hulk is stronger than their favorite so they get fatigued and attempt to discredit him...Marvel has stated on many occasions that Hulk IS and always will be their strongest hero....Stan may have originally intended for Thor to be stronger but it soon turned out that's not the case...characters change...and for years now Marvel has been saying that Hulk is their strongest hero and that's the way it should be. I would've place Thor at #4 though, he's only slightly weaker than Herc...followed by Silver Surfer, Juggernaut and Gladiator...anyways your top 3 of Hulk, Herc and Sentry is definitely correct, while the rest is debatable I do agree with most of it. Nice list :)

@JJ62: Thanks for checking out this list and thanks for the well thought out comment.

It's pretty much impossible to rank the strongest characters in an order everyone would agree on but I'm glad you agree with the top three. You make a good point about Thor possibly being higher. I'll have to look into Anti-Venom, I had no idea he was in the 70 ton range.

two words... the beyonder

The Beyonder is so powerful it's almost beyond comprehension but this is a list about pure physical strength not overall power. Also, this is a list of heroes and the Beyonder is not and has never been a hero. Considering his power level he's closer to an abstract being. That's why I don't consider the Beyonder eligible to be on this list.

I have to say I strongly disagre with this list.

First, I tend to think that Sentry is the stronger and the most powerful (he was created to be the most powerful superhero after all and his limits are not totally known he may be even omnipotent) but I understand that Hulk is the first, after all is Hulk. But Thor should be inmediatelly after this two. The debate has always been between Thor and Hulk, I´m sorry, but there was never a debate with Hercules. Anyway, I can still accept Hercules slightly above Thor. But Thor below Gladiator?, and most of all Thor below Juggernaut?? I think that doesn't make any sense. Juggernaut would be somewhere around 12 position, below red Hulk, Hyperion, Beta Ray Bill. I can't say anything about Gilgamesh because I don't know much.

I think Nova should be far far below, like 30 positions or so. Probably you are counting with the mindworld power, but that's not his real power level. Atlas should be more or less at Giant Man level, maybe slightly stronger. But never above Hulka or the Thing. Also, Iron Man is too high. I don't he can be stronger than Sasquatch or Valkirye (both should be higher, she is an asgardian goddess). The same could be said about the Vision, which should be higher.

Captain Universe so low? He can defeat the Juggernaut. Thunderstrike has Thor level force and Maxxam Herc level force.

And I still don't understand what are the Beast and wasp doing there. Beast is weaker than, for example, Spiderman, and the wasp has normal human strength.

And I still don't understand what are the Beast and wasp doing there. Beast is weaker than, for example, Spiderman, and the wasp has normal human strength.

Everyone listed from #72 on are out of order.

I'm sorry you strongly disagree. I put Hercules at third based on his feats and how Marvel has officially defined his strength over the past 30 years. Herc's strength has always at least been rated on the same level as Thor's and twice it has been rated above Thor's. Thor has never been rated stronger than Hercules. I ranked Thor below Gladiator based on his feats and how his strength has been defined, too. When ranking Juggernaut I generally focused on his best feats and ratings but you do have a point concerning him. He could reasonably be ranked a bit lower.

Nova is ranked so high due to the strength he has demonstrated before, during and since he had the power of the Worldmind. His ranking is consistent with Marvel's official rating of his strength. Atlas was a super-humanly strong criminal before he gained his size-changing powers and his his strength increases the same way Giant-Man's does when he grows larger. Giant-Man, however, is a man of normal strength who becomes super-humanly strong when he grows to giant size. Atlas is a man of super-human strength whose strength increases as his size increases. This makes him stronger than other size-changing-growing characters. He's not above the Hulk but he is (and I wish he wasn't) stronger than the Thing. Iron Man is ranked right where he should be according to how his power and strength levels are defined by Marvel. I don't think he should be as strong as he is but that doesn't change it.

Captain Universe is a very powerful character but has only shown a high level of physical strength when the Uni-Power is possessed by a character who is already super-humanly strong. Thunderstrike has powers similar to Thor but is considered to be only about half as strong and has never demonstrated strength anywhere near Thor's. Maxam's strength has been compared to that of Hercules once by Thor and that's why he's ranked. These three characters are not listed in order of their proper rankings.

Though his strength level has been quite inconsistent over the decades, the Beast is ranked on this list due to his best strength showings. The Wasp is ranked due to her time as a size-changing/growing character right before and during the events of the "Avengers: Disassembled" storyline. She is sometimes referred to as "Giant-Girl" regarding this period. When she's a giant, she's super-humanly strong enough to be on this list.

Thor was made to be an analogue to Superman but he clearly isn't portrayed as the strongest anymore.
