Marvel's Strongest Heroes

No Caption Provided

This image shows Marvel's first real attempt to categorize it's heroes according to their strength levels. This was printed in the back of "Amazing Spider-Man Annual" # 15, 1981, which pre-dated (and helped inspire the "Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe" less than two years later. It seems quite inaccurate now, but back then it was pretty close. Most thought the Silver Surfer and Colossus ranked to low, but each ended up with his strength defined at a higher level when the OHOTMU came out in '83.

As of today, marvel has made many versions/updates of the Handbook, but the debates still rage; Who's stronger? Who's the better fighter? Who's more powerful? Etc. Though the editorial staff set out to give us fans answers to these questions, their subsequent inconsistencies have merely fueled the fire. Still, this was a fun chart and the Handbooks have been informative and pretty good overall (imo) as well. I thought putting it atop my list of Marvel's strongest heroes would be appropriate.

I've listed the some of the weight (in Tons) that some of these guys were stated to be able to lift.

MU = Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. The number after the apostrophe is the year that edition started being printed. The number after the colon is the Weight the character was stated to be able to lift in Tons.

If some of these characters don't have info for every edition (or any info at all), I'm still getting to it or the info hasn't yet been decided officially by Marvel.

You might be right about those guys.

I've thought about listing DC's strongest heroes but I've never got around to doing it. It's a good idea.

Sentry has the power of a million exploding suns, not a billion. It's annoying how often this number is forgotten. Still that would place him very highly in this list.

It's a million. I've corrected it.

At second overall, I'd say he's ranked very highly indeed.

@powerherc: Well played.

Thanks. I've gotta tell you something, though; I tried to edit this list but since it's over 100 items long ComicVine won't let me change anything without either reducing the number of entries to 100 (or less) or changing it to an unordered list. I don't want to do either, so even though you're right about the Sentry having the power of a million exploding suns instead of a billion, it's stuck as is.

Nice list. I remember at one point Marvel attempted to bill Spider-Man as the 4th strongest right under Hulk, Thor, and Thing, but it never felt even remotely believable with Hercules, Wonderman, Namor, and Iron Man already around. I think they pretty much have it right at the moment, but they definitely need some consistency with some characters overall skill levels. I think Wolverine is the most inconsistent character in Marvel concerning actual skill.

Thanks. I remember Spider-Man being very overrated strength-wise, too. This image seems to imply he's next on the list after the characters he's lifting:

No Caption Provided

Because he's stronger than Spider-Man as well, Iron Man should be on that disc Spider-Man's lifting, also.

I do agree that Wolverine's skills are very inconsistent.

Skaar is suppose to have the same powers as his father, the Hulk, and his mother Caiera. Yet, you list Skaar at 83, while you have people like Wasp, Snowbird, and Namorita rated way above him. He's fought his father and hurled Juggernaut into orbit...and yet you rate him below the Wasp!?

In the case of Skaar I added him to this list well after I had first made it and couldn't insert him in what I consider his proper spot to be. Everyone from number 72 on is not in their proper place. I would put Skaar just below the She-Hulk in strength.

I didn't forget about the One Above All; I didn't even consider him. This is a list of superheroes (even if the character was only a hero for a short time, i.e. the Juggernaut) and it's only concern is physical strength not overall power.

The One Above All is probably the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe but he's not a superhero and this isn't a list of the all-around, overall most powerful characters.

physical strength is result of the characters powers, so in order to measure the strongest you must regard all abilities as strengths. but i agree that one above all is not a hero.

I must . . . ? Lol!

Well, since it's my list about the physically strongest Marvel Superheroes, I choose to consider only physical strength (meaning the ability to lift, push or pull objects using only muscle power) not any other power or the sum total of powers. The term strength has several meanings for several contexts and this list is only about physical strength.

just curious, where would you rank quasar ? (member of the annihilators)

also i wonder why marvel writers didn't stick to the script and keep the silver surfer's strength feats in the "super medium weights" category with spiderman, she hulk, ect?

@marvel123: Though Quasar is very powerful he isn't physically super-strong, therefore I wouldn't rank him on this list at at.

I think Marvel bumped him up to the top-tier because it was quickly pointed out by fans that the Surfer has the ability to increase his strength to near-Hulk level and had actually done so on-panel before Marvel's original chart had come out.

One concern about the list because in your comments you've said Hulk isn't the strongest until he gets angry enough. Silver Surfer, Zeus and Odin you said your doing it from their starting strength, so shouldn't if Hulk been done from his starting strength.

You make a good point about the Hulk. Even though it may seem inconsistent in this case, I rate him #1 because Marvel considers him their strongest hero. Another point to consider is that in recent years the Hulk has received a strength upgrade which has made his strength right after transformation much higher than it used to be, possibly higher than many others on the list.

Blue Marvel is definitely top twelve but I can't edit this list without losing some of it so I haven't put him up there. The other are all powerful but because this list only considers physical strength, only Carol Danvers (if that's who you mean by 'Captain Marvel') and Rogue belong - and are - on this list.

First off. nice post!!!! However, I would disagree with Hulk being the strongest. In My OPINION, either Sentry or Blue Marvel would be at number 1. Blue Marvel is easily Sentry Level so he should be at least number two but Sentry should be number 1. Reason being, Hulk at his BEST, Best being World War Hulk is on regular Sentrys level and if you know the Sentry, the void is the next step and is more powerful than the Sentry. World war Hulk is NOT a consistent persona of the Hulk as in he isn't something that's manifested on a regular basis in the whole of Hulk mythology. If he compared consistently, then I would favor him at number two or three. If World War Hulk made number three , i guess i would still debate him for Juggernaut. Juggs have historically, NATURALLY and Consistently show to be stronger than a " normal" (savage Hulk) Hulk . He has been shown to be be able to Battle world war Hulk Physically as an equal. it has been stated by Cytorakk that the more Cain pleases him through destruction the more power he gives him which basically means he has infinite strength. Again, this is my opinion for the reason stated.

I think Thor should be above Sentry if for no other reason than he was the one to kill him, but other than that I pretty much agree with your first dozen or so but after that it gets a little dicey. Like hulkling and captain Britain being above firelord, the vision, and thunderstrike, and if your going for physical strength alone, black bolt shouldn't really be on this list. If you're going on total powers than most of your list should be rearranged and hulk might not be at number one. Also, I know they are skyfathers and all and not exactly super heroes, but if your going to include Zeus and Odin on here they should probably be at the #1/2 spots being as they have proven themselves stronger than Thor and Hercules albeit with the aid of the Odinforce and/or whatever Zeus calls his power.

@thorleedyson:

Thanks for reading and commenting on my list. You make some good points.

I ranked these heroes based on their officially stated strength throughout the various editions of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and a couple of Marvel role playing games. Hulkling and Captain Britain have both been ranked above the three other you mention so I ranked them likewise. Zeus and Odin are sky-fathers and maybe they shouldn't be on this list but I put them on here anyway and did so ranking them based solely on their base-level strength. In the case of Black Bolt I ranked where he is due to how high he seems to be able to gather all his power into physical power when used for his "Master Blow."

Various adjustments do need to be made but since the purchase and because of the subsequent reformatting of Comic Vine, I'm unable to edit this list without either cutting some characters entirely or losing the ability to rank them.

PowerHerc very good job I like your ranking and I agree with you Hercules should be at the Top he's the God of strength so as long as he needs strength he gets it. But where i am not too comfortable is the new Hyperion the guy hold two universes apart as a feat so he should be at least as strong as Gladiator or above him. Namorita has been stated to be equal to Namor, so she should be just after him. Miss Marvel strength level is now at 90 so she should be before or after Thundra the same thing goes with Power Princess but over all i am very impress with your ranking it shows that you know the Marvel Universe and thank you also to update us on this

When the Golden Age superhero "Marvel Boy" (Robert Grayson) was first reintroduced in the pages of "Fantastic Four" as the "Crusader" during the late 70's he possessed the Quantum Bands and demonstrated a high level of super-strength (later estimated to be Class 75) while battling the Thing.

Next, Wendell Vaughn (whom looked exactly like Grayson) took possession of them and has been shown using them in many different ways over the past 30+ years, but he has not demonstrated any increase in strength from the Quantum Bands.

First of all marvel says hulk is not the strongest from marvel earth anymore. There are a number of superheros now that equal hulk in strength or are stronger.

I tend to not open threads like these any more because folks have thier own views, biases etc..etc..,so i will post this here one time here and leave.

I disagree with this list.

It's a outdated and inaccurate list anyway because most of those 100 ton superheros could lift beyond it or way beyond it.

Most of them have incalculable strength, but anyway here are a few of my views.

Blue marvel knock red hulk out with one punch and has beaten the sentry.

Blue marvel equals a vastly enraged hulk in strength or exceeds then HIM and the sentry from what i seen and from his bio info from marvel.com and other sources.

Blue marvel from my point of view and the bio info etc.. is the strongest on this list.

New marvel now hyperion is MAYBE strong as the hulk OR maybe stronger, but i am still not too clear about him

HE KNOCK HULK BACK TO BANNER.

Hyperion is stronger then savage or normal hulk, maybe a tie with world war hulk but maybe not as strong as worldbreaker hulk,or maybe a tie too,who knows, so it depends on what hulk or version folks are talking about.

Sentry i think is tie in strength with hulk or could really be stronger.

Maxam match savage hulk in strength or maybe stronger

Maxam should be up there.

She-hulk equals thor or is stronger.

She had a power upgrade too

Silver surfer is thor level strength so he would be equal to thor,so they would be a tie.

Captain universe is beyond 100 tons too.

Anyway i disagree with list but there will take up too much time.

For folks not sure or clear or want to get the real or accurate list info just go to wiki marvel or open the comic vine links above next to the superheros pictures to get READ the strength levels for yourselfs and use your brains and don't use someones list.

Go to the updated and correct sources.

Some are below.

Now for Blue marvel again.

His bio info is right in the link posted above saying he is the strongest from marvel earth.

Here it is again.

This is the best compiled list on the internet. Thank you for the effort. I really appreciate the fact that you included the list from 1981. The '81 list is somewhat close to how I remember things from my childhood. Interestingly, when I was a kid from the mid-1960's to mid-1970's, the big strength debate was between the Hulk and the Thing. Unfortunately the Thing has dropped in stature the last few decades. Thanks for the memories.
