the Lacanian concept of symbolic castration is the mechanism of the cowl. So what is meant by symbolic castration. For Lacan the phallus is the symbol of castration. To have a phallus means in the symbolic logic, not the logic of the real ok, means being castrated. this is a notion of virtuality ; if under castration threat you behave in a certain way to avoid castration now this is a virtual threat NEVER realized but you fear it all the time you abstain from certain acts and so on. this virtual threat has real effects; you internalize inhibitions.
Now when Lacan speaks about Signifier, Phallus as signifier he means something different. Imagine a judge or a king how do they function if you take away the signs of their power (ie) robe, crown, sceptre he is just a ordinary idiot guy OK the moment King Judge person of authority puts on insignia they are transformed.
For Lacan phallic power and castration are correlated. Where is here the dimension of castration. its here in the gap between you as a person and the external object that confers power on you. Its not Bruce Wayne who has power but the cowl. this is key. the reason he doesn't kill is he fears the removal of the cowl. he fears being ordinary idiot guy or in other words powerless to stop the killer who murdered he parents.
@zombietag: this is so true i wish they could break this encapsulated idea of pushing the envelope with crass gore and cursing. there are modern taboos to subvert that would transverse the fantasy in the Lacanian sense against the politics of jouissance.
A summary of my feelings on healthcare through a conversation that has taken place. Person,"You're going to have to pay more in taxes." Me, "And the tradeoff is more people get healthcare?" Person, "Yeah." Me, "I'm ok with that."
motion comics to me it is a question of the relationship between the reader and the static image in a animated format this dialogue undergoes a flux in tempo and this pacing subjects the reader to more rigorous guidelines which are seemingly superficial but subtle and therefore should be mentioned; to me its like viewing a comic with blinders and a hand turning the page that's not mine own, but whatever.
