Being too hard 0

Being to hard on what? This book. I read a few reviews before going in to see what the general mindset on the issue was and I see folks upset. Most folks are referring to how great Fraction`s run was, but I disagree. I was never a fan of his Iron Man, but that isn't why you're reading this, if you are at all, so let's get to it.Issue 2 of Iron Man is a strong issue with a great story, but it does have weak points. Kinks in the armor, no pun intended. I'm not sure about anyone else but I was a ta...

A short delay and finally Nightwing 14 is on the shelves and I'm not so sure it was worth and extra weeks wait. We got to see new writer DeFalco`s opening volley with issue 13 and well, it sort of petered off into obscurity the minute I finished reading it. If not for the reminders in 14 I wouldn't remember anything from last issue. Anyway, issue 14 starts off good, we get a dose of action and the continued search for Shiva`s next target. After a night on the town, so to speak, Nightwing goes fo...

Take the good with the bad 0

I've been all sorts of excited for this. Captain America has a new creative team, a shiny new issue 1 and a new story that goes beyond the usual for the Living Legend. Captain America #1, if you haven't been living under a rock, is Rick Remender`s introduction of a Cap who won't be seeded in America but is forced to traverse worlds unknown, or something along those lines. The first issue I must say is good. I would put it with most of the issue 1's that it's a launchpad issue so we don't get a w...

Hope it Keeps 0

I will admit it; when I heard Matt Fraction was taking over the writing position on Fantastic Four, well, I was a bit disappointed. I felt that this wasn't his kind of book but I will also admit that not only is the first issue surprisingly good, but he completely changed my opinion of his future on the book. It is a first issue so it isn't a master story or anything but given a couple of issues I see an incredible story possibly developing. After an adventure Reed, who`s arm is wounded, begins ...

Setting things in motion 0

You know, I've never been a huge fan of the X-Men, maybe when I was younger what with the cartoon. I have, over time, grown to like Cyclops quite a bit and recent events have actually strengthened that enjoyment. With this the flood gate is opened. I really got into this book and the story it's setting up. I see this issue as a wheel crossing a speedbump to go down a downhill road. Things, once in motion, may be fast and incredible. We get a glimpse into the world of mutantkind and a very old sc...

Hope for the Future 0

It's issue one of Iron Man, a point for me to finally be able to jump on to the character, how does it fair? Extremely well. It is a first issue so you can't expect too much but I have to hand it to Gillen, the opener is a well done enjoyable read. We get to see who Tony is by getting in the character`s head and experiencing his wit from the inside. I can't divulge much of the story because it's easy to spoil but let's just say something we know is coming back from the past. It really was a good...

More!?! 0

Pathfinder, so far, has been a decent read, nothing to climb the walls over but it has been okay. Issue 3 brings us more of that middle of the road work but we do get to see more for our buck in the story. The most exciting little extra was some actual character development in Merisiel who, after taking night watch, tells us a bit about herself. I enjoyed what I saw there but it was nothing that we didn't know from other sources in the Pathfinder library. As for the story it is moving at a slow ...

30 dollars...30 DOLLARS! 0

30 dollars, if I hear it again I might punch someone and I don't need a box to make me do it either. Avenging Spider-man is a great series with a perfect mix of heart, comedy and story. The annual tried to do that, I really do think they tried, but it fell short. I had to read this since I'm a Thing fan and have a warm spot for Spidey too, who doesn't? The story revolves around two brothers, one sensible, one dumb, finding a box that causes the city of New York to turn more violent than usual an...

Almost over 0

Issue 638. The next to last issue of the Cap and series, so how does it fair? Well, I will give it that the story is good. It's a nice yarn set in another world but I must admit that though I've been following the series since Hawkeye I'm sort of lost on a few things. The story jumps to and fro sometimes and it left me a bit confused, a more intelligent man could probably comprehend it better than me. Cullen is a fantastic writer, let me say that first and foremost, but it seems he faltered a ta...

Hello again, let's dive right in to issue 15 of TMNT. First the story: The story is really good. The book goes back and forth between the brothers 4 looking for a new home, worried that April`s antique shop might be too vulnerable a home what with the enemies they're making. Donatello, who the books as of late seem to really push into the spotlight which is great considering he's a great character who rarely gets that sort of attention, has managed to locate an ideal spot. At the same time we al...

A Masterpiece 0

I just finished reading this issue and let me open by saying, this may be the best book I've read this year. The TMNT annual is completely done by genius creator Kevin Eastman. As if the original books weren't enough to prove his talent he releases this piece of gold onto the shelves. A lot of folks will likely complain due to the pricetag on this thing at a whopping 8.99 but this is literally almost a trade paperback in length. I actually have trades I paid more for with less story but alas, tr...

All guts no Glory? 0

Fantasy comics have taken a lot of shapes over the years and a lot of those shapes have been modeled from roleplaying games and video games. Weather it's because no one has any original ideas for a fantasy tale or they just don't translate well to the medium, who knows? That aside one common thing with those books is that they usually fail in sales and finally fade away, never getting to the next level of readership. There are a few exceptions which break that mold like Mouse Guard or The Stuff ...

End of the Road 0

Issue 19 has arrived and with it the end of the age of Brubaker. It has been a long road with some intense curves, terrible bumps and a few accidents but at the end of that road is the final issue. I wish I could say that it was a bright light, a beacon at the end of some tunnel but not quite. The issue was great, don't get me wrong but I had some problems with it. Brubaker took a few liberties with the history of Cap and changed a few things for this issue to work in the modern timeline. I wasn...

Better Than Expected 0

Here it is, the culmination of what AvX was leading to. A team built by Captain America to represent both sides of the conflict and work together to achieve at least some of what Charles Xavier dreamed. I was honestly shocked by the book. I thought it would be horrible considering the sort of gimmick expected with that kind of situation but no, it was a decent read. It was well written and the merging of the 2 teams makes perfect sense considering some of the things said in the issue. I won't de...

A Little More Happening 0

Here we have issue 2 of Lookouts. In my last review I talked about how there wasn't much story and not much character development, well, with this issue we get more acquainted with one of the characters, Dore, a young man who is getting a reputation for using his blade more than his brain. The group face off against a bridge-guarding Troll who poses a riddle to the group. Dore blurts an answer which leads to a fight, which Dore wanted anyway. We also get some glimpses into Dore`s past and what b...

Welcome to the Forest 0

I couldn't help but notice when I looked this issue up to write my review that no one has done one. Well, here I am, ready to be the first for this new series trying to claw it`s way to at least getting some attention. Issue 1 introduces us to the Lookouts, a group of rangers who guard the magical forest Eyrewood and protect the surrounding villages and any travelers venturing in the woods, similar to the Mouse Guard from the book of the same name. A situation has arisen within the woods and a g...

Eh 0

So I hopped back onto the Nightwing bandwagon after briefly cancelling it due to money issues. My first issue since resubscribing is 13. Let's dive right in. First off it isn't written by Kyle Higgins, the man who thus so far has made an excellent go with wingding, and it sort of shows. The story makes a lot of reference to Joker returning and a lot of folks are angry that Dick isn't off fighting the clown prince but remember, Nightwing has his own problems to deal with and on top of that some a...

I really want to cuss... 0

I guess I should first explain my title. Reviewing my books is something I mainly do for myself, not for anyone out there. I do it to put my word on the books I subscribe to and if someone likes what I say or even hates what I say, then that's just a bonus. I try to review in a clean fashion just in case some 12 year old somehow sees what I have to say. This issue, number 0 in a line of fantastic books, makes me want to cuss in such a powerful way. It is so good, I can only use profanity to desc...

One big family 0

The beautiful thing about the TMNT is this great family we have. The "older" brother in charge, the immature/funny one, the one who got the intelligence and the flawed one. It is such a great thing to see that sort of dynamic alongside ninja clans, space monsters and mutants. That's what has made and defined these characters and with this issue, we get a mighty dose of it. I can talk all day but the story, though not really advancing much in this issue, speaks for itself. We get a focus not on t...

Nearly Missed it 0

This issue was a bit of a challenge for me. I actually had to go on a search for it because the business I subscribe through was delivered damaged copies so I had to fend for myself. I found it and man was it worth the hunt. This issue centers around events involving AIM and the Wizard which adds up to a wild combination. The issue brings about some interesting story, for a new arch`s first story, and has such an amazing mix of humor, action and science fiction. The art is interesting to me. It'...

Picks up before it ends 0

Anyone who may have read my other reviews of the issues so far may know that in recent months I have been less than impressed with Brubaker`s attempts of late. They seem tired and half-attempted. Well, the latest issue, I have to say, is a good deal better, though that doesn't say much. The book continues a yarn that has been running since issue 1 and though a decent read, just doesn't propel that story any further. No major events to advance the story. It is good to see some new life in old cha...

Continuity? 0

With the latest issue of Captain America and... we switch from Iron Man to Black Widow. The good part about all these character switches is that we see a fresh face in the team-up every few issues and yet Bunn continues to build on a single story spanning when he first took over with Cap and Hawkeye. This issue, I must say, is deep inside his story and actually pretty darn good. The story, continuing for this long, continues and the plot really opens up, which is sad considering when Marvel:Now ...

Another Lantern 0

*Sigh* The "good" folks at DC, with this very special 0 issue, reveal to us a new Green Lantern. This isn't new news, since it was already announced but now we have the book to explain it and it's a real lump. Right out of the box this issue tries to establish Baz, our "hero," as a victimized man, forced into the lifestyle he leads. The plot to this, written by Geof Johns himself, is weak and not well done. There is more to the story, I'm sure, but with this issue don't expect anything bigger th...

Off to a good start 0

For those who don't know, Pathfinder is a roleplaying campaign much like Dungeons and Dragons, and like D&D the good folks at Dynamite want to take said campaign and make a comic out of it. Most of the time it's a disaster when a company tries this but I have to say, there is a charm to this book that makes it stick out. The beauty of roleplaying games is the diversity of each character, since each player invented them and knows them inside and out, they are very individual and it feels like...

I went there 0

That's right, I went there, I gave issue 2 five stars. Why, Ping, why five? Because: This book is doing something that it is not getting attention for and it needs to be noticed! If you are a woman, if you are tired of the way women are portrayed in comics, then ladies this is the book you should read. Issue 1 gave us a look into the military mind of Carol, that tough, hardened mind that all military folks get with training and experience. We saw how she is not a soft little girl but a hard woma...

Whats next? 0

So on we go, to the next story arch. With this arch comes new artist Andy Kuhn. Issue 13 is an alright read. It isn't quite to the level that this series has been but again, like the arch before, it's another introductory issue that leads into something new. Despite some small short comings it does have some really cool moments on the Foot Clan`s side of things that by itself make it worth buying. We see some events coming forward and so the story of the book is about to take off but we have to ...

Precious Little Review 0

This is a book a little out of my norm but I fell in love with the original black and white versions so when these new prettier editions were announced I had to subscribe. I finished this baby in a day which is sad but I couldn't help myself. It's still that same story and character O'Malley captures so well only we get some great color to increase what was already pretty darn awesome. We also get some art edits by the creator/artist, mainly small fixes O'Malley felt took away from the art that ...

Awesome! 0

It's sort of tough to review something that has been out so long and is known for it's greatness. I'm going to try anyway and let me tell you, it's a labor of love. Issue 2 of course picks up where 1 left off and we are introduced to the next villain the brothers 4 will face and more supporting characters. I'm still blown away by the art of this book, it's just a neat style and has a feel to it that I can't place. It's very 80's but it's so welcoming to the eye. The story is great and character ...

You Gotta Be Kidding Me! 0

So yeah, they're redoing TMNT vol. 1 in color. I heard this and being a fan of the white and black originals I didn't even subscribe despite my love for anything of the brothers 4. Then I saw the second issue on the rack at my local shop and thought to myself "Wonder what it looks like in color? Did it change much?" I subscribed after that thumb-through and bought the issues already out. It is amazing. Nothing really needs to be said about the story and art, we all already know how amazing those...

Different Feel 0

I have to say that reading this issue was a nice experience. I can't say what exactly it was but something about this book felt very old school TMNT to me. This issue of course focuses on Casey and it does so powerfully. One might think it would be an issue of him busting heads, which it does have that but it's a very emotional issue as well as we some bits of his past dealing with his mother and his father. The depths of Casey we see in this are by and far more than I expected. I actually bough...

A Family Outing 0

Let me dive right in and say WOW. I don't care what anyone says, this book monthly delivers things that comics are sorely missing. I'm talking tons of detailed characters with their own personalities and enough story to fulfill even this old-schooler`s needs. This book never fails. It's in this issue we finally get to see what everyone has waited for, our boys are going after the Foot which means facing the Shredder. We see the brothers 4 disagreeing but working together for the common goal of d...

Oh...Oh... 0

The cover to this issue sort of gives away it's big draw. We all knew this was coming and man, man, man. This issue continues the current arc and steps things up a notch. I'm amazed at how consistently these books are in terms of being this good every month. The quality of each issue is amazing and that sure as dawn shows in this book. The more the writer gets comfortable and the artist grows the more it improves and that's apparent in this issue. It's sad so few people will give it an opportuni...

Speechless 0

Nightwing #9 is hands down the best book I have read this month. I must say I am VERY impressed. Higgins has really taken the history of the Court of Owls and of Gotham City and most importantly to this book, the Grayson family history and just ran so far with it. We learn more of the Grayson`s past and the more we see the more I am kept on edge. I am loving this series. Barrows art is phenomenal, expressing the simultaneous beauty and darkness of Gotham. Wow, I am left speechless, I don't know ...

Classic 0

I'll begin by admitting that Aquaman has never really been a character I go nuts over but I have always liked and enjoyed the character. I will also admit that I have never subscribed to anything he was in...until now. Issue 1 immediately hooked me. The first pages are amazing and the dynamic of the poorly respected hero gives him an angle we never see in comics. This issue doesn't have a ton of story but what it has is classically written. Something happens at the beginning of the book that is ...

Simply Beautiful 0

With the end of the "Forever" storyline last issue, we saw a bit of the future. With issue 605 we get to see a great deal of the future through the eyes and ears of Reed Richards and his father. The future looks bright and a certain constant is always there to comfort the reader as we journey through time. This issue is beautifully amazing. It takes a moment for all that you've seen to sink in but in the end you simply can't help but smile. Too many issues of comic books now are all fight and fl...

A Proper Tribute 0

This issue of Avenging Spidey was very special. Back in December the comic book world lost a true giant when Joe Simon, creator of Captain America and many others, passed away. Marvel printed a small tribute to the man in some of it`s comics, especially Cap, but it was short and seemed like a sales pitch. This whole issue was written as tribute to him and it does an excellent job of it. We get to see Spidey finding common ground with Cap and trying to make buddy-buddy with him. It's a touching i...

Vision Returns 0

I have to admit that when I saw Vision return in Avengers, I was excited to see the red-faced android. My favorite incarnation of Avengers had him as a member and so I got a bit nostalgic seeing him. That aside he has yet to be involved but this issue, which takes us back to the days leading up to his appearance, explains a few things and shows us a Vision of character. A Vision we can love. I recommend this issue highly as it fills some gaps and again, focused on the character, let's us see Vis...

Getting somewhere 0

So, finally, an issue full of story. My complaints with a lot of Marvel comics lately is lack of script and story but here we get our fill of both. Brubaker still isn't writing like he used to but Cap 8 is a very fun and interesting issue. The story is picking up a bit and we are starting to see events tie together and the story evolve into a more complex creature. The art is a bit disappointing but at times I really enjoy what I'm seeing. One thing Davis does that I missed is he draws a more le...

Don't be biased 0

So, I'm a huge TMNT fan. I was a kid in the 80s and early 90s so of course they were my first official obsession. I never really bought the comics until this run started so I figured I would give it a try, especially with Kevin Eastman having a hand in things. I have liked it. Not loved, but I have enjoyed it and even recommended it to fans. It's a fun read with some nods to things from the original comics and the old cartoon(YES!!!) This issue starts the next story arc and sort of brings things...

It hurts 0

This book was simply amazing. Not only has it gone back to the science fiction roots of FF but it is so well written, so well done I can't even think of words to describe it. Johnny is back, which if thats a spoiler to you you have to start coming of the mole men's caves more often. The book takes us to his side of the story to tell us what happened during all thats been going on. It will rock your world/worlds. This thing is a hefty 7 bucks and honestly, if they had charged more and I knew what...
