1. Gene Colan
An absolute master and my own personal favorite. Colan was able to do things with shading that is just breath-taking. If a panel involved movement he made it look as though it traveled at light-speed. Just an amazing style and incredible artist.
2. Sal Buscema
In my head the world of Marvel still looks like Sal Buscema`s art. He drew so many of the Captain America and Avengers books that I think fondly of that I just can't get his images out of my head. I love his style, stylized yet somewhat real, a perfect blend. He really is pushing it to be my favorite artist period.
3. Jack Kirby
Arguably the most important man at Marvel`s beginnings, half of what we have in comics came from this man's pencil. Kirby drew more comics than anyone, spitting out 6 pages of full art a day, thats almost twice as much as modern artists. His style was very noticeable and very stylized. If you can't spot his work, you aren't breathing. The only reason he isn't further up the list is because between my top three I can't make up my mind.
4. John Buscema
Brother of Sal, John`s Avengers are some serious visuals to behold. Not to mention, his work on Conan the Barbarian is incredible. A great artist with a noticeable style and serious skill.
5. John Byrne
Another great man at Marvel, Byrne is another bringing together realism with a styled take. His Captain America and Fantastic Four runs are some of the best stuff out there. Give them a read and you'll understand.
6. Joe Madureira
Might seem odd to have him on here, but he is a modern master that you can look at his work and immediately recognize his hand. With lightspeed action, a style mixing east and west, a definite master of the craft.
