One of These Things is Not Like The Others...

Something about issue 14 of Teen Titans really bothered me. There were some things that I really liked but there was one thing that I could not shake and when I took a second look, I found even more things that irked me.

My Main Problem:

No Caption Provided

Ignoring the somber three in the back, can you spot my issue off the bat? Zoom in on Miguel's little comment, "I can't wait to change my outfit - Five times!" -- Come on! What is even the point of trying to make comics diverse by having characters of different sexual orientations if all your going to do is exploit them? If he had said "I can't wait to change my outfit!" I wouldn't have had any problem with it, it fits his character, but five times? Nobody, male or female, goes into their room with the intent of changing five times, it may happen, but not on purpose, it happens because you didn't like how you looked the first four times! ....... I don't know why it bugged me so much, it just did.

Problem Number 2:

So solstice has this weird skin thing along with her powers courtesy of NOWHERE, and I never really thought about it before but in this issue, mystery guys changes her into a normal looking human being and we see this:

Is it just me or does it look like Solstice was originally supposed to be naked when he changed her back, but the editors or whoever decided that was too taboo and made the color-er, color a skin tight dress onto her? Because why can I see her abs, and why is she covering herself up like like? ... I can see why they would change it after the whole Starfire debacle but you would think that they would do a better job of fixing it up so it doesn't look so obvious

and then later:

Her later that night.
Her later that night.
Her even later that same night, one sequence over.
Her even later that same night, one sequence over.

Okay first of all, Why is she wearing a nightgown!!! Does that mean she is literally walking around naked whenever they are doing their fighting and sleuthing and whatever else they do? Why would she choose clothes now! That is just confusing...And second of all What the heck pick an outfit!!

Okay so with the whole solstice thing I may just be nitpicking but the whole changing five times really did bug me....

Holy Cannoli Crossover's Batman!

Is it just me or did DC decide to launch a bunch of huge crossover story arcs all at the same time?

No Caption Provided

First off we have 'Death of the Family' It's the return of the Joker, and it involves practically everybody. Detective Comics, Batgirl, Batman, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Teen Titans, Batman and Robin, Catwoman, Nightwing, Suicide Squad. The whole thing goes from October 2012 till February 2013, with a total of 23 issues. The Joker is back! And he's coming after everyone! No cape and cowl is secure and no secret identity is completely safe. The Joker is ridding the Batman of all of his family in the name of love!

'H'el on Earth' started in October too, and maybe it was just me but I was anticipating Death of the Family for months before it came out where as the Superman crossover seemed to kinda come out of nowhere. It's run is from October to February same as the BatFam crossover. Including Superman, Superboy, and Supergirl, with guest appearance of the Justice League. Total of 14 issues. Superman has come face to face with his worst nightmare: a creature of unknown Kryptonian origin who is not only more powerful than the Man of Steel, but smarter than Supergirl and more lethal than Superboy. Putting Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy into battle with the deranged alien, H’el, who will stop at nothing to bring back Krypton from extinction even at the expense of Earth!

Finally, there is the 'Throne of Atlantis' crossover between the issues of Justice League and Aquaman, the smaller of the three crossover's spans from November to February with a total of only 6 issues not a bad amount but in comparison with the last two it's definitely a smaller feat. When a US Navy missile drill goes wrong for unknown reasons, sending multiple missiles into the ocean, striking Atlantis, their king Ocean Master takes it as a declaration of war, and initiates ocean to surface war tactics that both he and his brother, Aquaman wrote up years ago. Atlantis sends giant title waves through many coastal cities including Gotham City, Metropolis and Boston, planning to invade and eventually sink the city hit the hardest. When Ocean Master surfaces in Boston, it is up to Aquaman and the Justice League to end his attack on the surface world.

All in all the three crossover's are spanning 14 different issues throughout the entire time the crossover's are taking place. Some questions I asked myself when I realized that these were all taking place at the same time.

  • Why wouldn't they span them out? It's not like the stories are even mentioned in one another, and being that there are several characters that overlap into the three different crossovers, you have to assume they happen at different times, but that dips into the continuity issue, and i don't wanna start thinking about that, because it gives me a headache and i don't care enough to bother. But I wonder if their is a greater profit in having all the crossover's happen at the same time rather than happen one at a time. The entire appeal of a crossover for the publisher is that people who wouldn't usually read an issue of something, using myself as an example I am now picking up Superman, Supergirl, and Aquaman, and that's the result of a crossover times three. The same goes for all the issues taking part in the crossovers. So i can imagine that the profits from October - February would be an increase. But if they had spread these crossovers to happen one right after the other, the increase might be smaller in scale but perhaps it would last longer in the long run, but I know literally nothing about sales or business so I'm just speculating.
  • Continuity? So are they just confirming that there is none at all in the DCU. Just saying.
  • Do you think was an accident? Do you think they planned the three crossover's to happen at the same time? In my head I can see of funny scene of the DC people getting ready to publish and realizing that death of the family and H'el were happening at the same time and having kind of an oh shit moment, and then a month later being just like let's throw an Aquaman crossover in there too what the hell. Yeah cuz that's what happens in the comic world they are produced out of nowhere with no planning ahead - Sarcastic Sally. Shut up Sally, it was sardonic thought up skit!

Personally I'm enjoying all three of the crossovers on different levels. I think that some of the writing I've seen in Batman concerning the joker is some of the best I've ever read, so koodos to Scott Snyder. And now that the H'ell story line has me interested in the superman issues and what I've missed, on top of getting me reading something with Kenneth Rocafort art which makes me happy, I've missed him since he left Red Hood and the Outlaws. I'm looking forward to reading all of the stories and how they will end.

What has Been Missing from DC’s New 52?

Now I want to start off by saying that I love DC, while personally I’ve only been reading comics for around 3 years now, I don’t think it would be pushing it by saying that what I lack in experience I make up for with enthusiasm. Now down to my point, it’s clear to anyone who’s been reading the new 52 or even reading certain articles here on comicvine, that something is missing in the new 52 recipe. Besides costume changes and (mostly) minor personality differences something bigger is amiss. Over the past year and a bit I’ve tried to read as much as I can, I mean history in the making! Who can resist? While I tried to keep at least one book in each faction of the DCU, I ended up reading mostly and by mostly I mean all of them besides three (Batman incorporated and batwing and batwoman) of the bat family ones adding in Teen Titans, World’s Finest, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Superboy. Add them all up and there’s a whole chuck of the “52” part in the new 52! (Just wondering at what point do we stop calling it new?) Obviously I’m not talking about every book, some of them are, dare I say it, amazing, and this missing piece... don’t get me wrong it’s not a necessity, it’s also not missing in every book, so keep that in mind.

So I think I'm as self qualified as any internet blogger, to put in my two cents. What I think is missing is the heart. At least with the books I've been reading, the true character of the character is more intended and assumed to be there, than shown by the true actions of whatever character we are talking about here. Confused? Well so am I! What I mean to say I guess is that, one of my first interactions with DC superheroes was from a little cartoon, Justice League the Animated Series, heard of it? My favorite parts now when I re-watch it are the whole batman/wonder woman flirtation (because yes I am a silly fangirl), or when I cried for reals when superman died, not because I thought him truly dead but because of the reaction from the team. Another example, pre-flashpoint one of my absolute favorite series was teen titans, while yes it was a mix of the characters and their troubles and all the usual things you go to a comic book for, it was less about the action, because if that’s what you we’re fixing for why not go to one of the many other high action packed books (superman, batman... the obvious ones) and more about the characters, and the struggles they had personally, and how they would band together or break apart, it was getting to still have all the superhero action and still be able to look at the behind the scenes stuff. Robin stealing the batmobile? Raven getting a tattoo to express herself, as well as kid flash getting one too only for it to disappear because of his flashy ways?

But rein me in here or I could go on for awhile... God I miss that series.... ANYWAYS my point is this, I think the writers are trying, I mean these are still the same people who were working for DC before the reboot, so what happened? Did they lose all their mojo? No! Of course not, so maybe they have all become a little to obsessed with pleasing all of us to slow down and take a breather and make us wait for the good stuff just to happen? I don’t know but it seems to me that if you want to reboot an entire fictional universe, maybe you should slow down and stop to think about why reboot it at all? I mean come on if you’re gonna reboot something might as well do it right! If you wanted to kill off a few characters you could have done it without rearranging the world, personality change puh-lease the comic book industry change our (ok technically their) characters all the time without consulting so why start now? What I mean to say is that... DC rebooted their world but they didn't take the time to tell us the stories, and that is as much our fault as it is theirs, we have become impatient in our love and whiny even, and in order to please us they whip half thought out, poorly done battle scenes and scantily clad women (but don’t focus on the skin remember your all angst-y at DC!) Instead of creating stories and weaving intricate plots into one another, they are too worried about the month to month. So they didn't really start from the beginning which I can understand you can only expect your readers to hold their attention for so long.... but maybe if you had started at the beginning in the first place you wouldn't be so turned around now? Think about them bananas!

...Obviously you can’t please everyone to perfection, who’s to say my opinion is even one that’s close to being the correct one? But I would really appreciate some more character moments. At this point I don’t even know if I’m defending or fighting with DC, oh well it’s not like I’m gonna stop reading.

Agree? Disagree? I wanna know what everyone else thinks....

My Favorite Couples from Comics

  • Wonder Girl and Superboy

No Caption Provided

These guys are my feel good couple, because for the most part they are innocent . They grew up in Young Justice together, with their little crush, and in teen titans it's like the first issue when they are confessing their true feelings!

I mean don't get me wrong this couple is anything but ordinary! They go through crisis after crisis. But it's the charming things like, on their first date when Superboy still doesn't have full control over his powers, his x-ray vision flicks on and he can see right through her shirt while she's talking to him normally and he looks away trying not to be a peeping tom.

No Caption Provided

And even when they are being not so innocent, it's still innocent! It's just nice to see a comic book couple actually stick together through the tragedies that happen to them. Superboy dies!!! He dies!! And they still get back together when he comes back to life! Now that's saying something.

  • Catwoman and Batman

No Caption Provided

Who doesn't love Catwoman and Batman?!?!?! From comics to movies to TV cartoons to video games, Batman + Catwoman = awesomeness!!!

No Caption Provided

It's an impossible situation, a man who won't stop stopping crime, and a woman who's nature says to screw what batman says and steal things. and even when she does temporarily stop, then she becomes a target. Let alone that Bruce has the ultimate trust issues. And think about it, the man can not leave his work at the office, he's forever on duty!

No Caption Provided

But who cares about all that, we don't need them to get married and have a kid to fulfill our fan filled desires! As long as they keep flirting on roof tops, stealing kisses, and declaring their love to each other while the other can't hear them (more or less), then I for one will be happy!

  • Wonder Girl and Tim Drake

As much as i loved love Wonder Girl and Superboy together, when Superboy died, and was gone for the whole one year later arc, my heart bled for both Wonder Girl-his girlfriend- and Robin- his best friend- (at the time he was just called robin) aka Tim Drake. They were both severely grieving, and they were trying to reach out to each other and be there for each other but it felt wrong because Conner was dead. But at the same time they were trying to move on having no idea that Superboy will ever come back. their relationship didn't really last, and it's probably for the best, but I liked it while it lasted.

  • Nightwing and Starfire

No Caption Provided

The real truth? I grew up watching teen titans on TV, so that's my lame excuse about why i like Starfire and nightwing, but once I read the Titans comic I still really liked the parts where they were together and not hating each other or ignoring each other.

..... BUT they make for really great passion scene which gets my thumbs up of approval

  • Harley Quinn and Joker

Ahh... True Love
Ahh... True Love

Now I just had to include this crazy couple, mostly because I absolutely love Harley. But then again, they are kinda perfect for each other. Who else would put up with the Joker's shenanigans and enjoy it while doing so? And I don't know if the Joker can even love, but hey if he didn't like her enough she'd be dead by now.

  • Superman and Lois Lane

Finally the ultimate comic couple. They have been together for forever. They seem to have a pretty normal life, from what I've actually read of the superman comic's. They are married and everything! And she hasn't gone psycho or anything! Plus of what I've seen they're relationship is super cute.

It's over.....

Well for those of you out there who care, recently I have been reading the teen titans (volume 3) like my life depends on it, in the last 2 months I've been able to read from issue 1 all the way to 100. Having just finished the last issue before the reboot all I'm left with is a sad feeling. while I think they couldn't have ended it with a better story arch, I'm left wanting more. With the reboot issues all caught up on already, I have no where to go with me and my obsessive personality. And while I'm sure I'll find something to do in between the monthly issues. I'm just a little sad that my teen titans hunger will have to starve.
