On the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin

As far back as 1970, former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark noted in his magisterial "Crime in America" (Simon and Schuster, 1970) that vigilanteism in the long run tends to be as bad as the criminality it ostensibly opposes( it's no coincidence that not only the Klan but groups like the Yakuza( Japan), Triads (China) and La Cosa Nostra, popularly known as the "Mafia" began as vigilantes.

If the murder of Trayvon Martin by racist vigilante George Zimmerman using Florida's infamous "stand your ground law" and his acquittal by an almost entirely white( albeit all female) jury last Saturday does NOT make this perfectly clear. Zimmerman and his supporters/family can deny racist intent until they and he are blue in the face- "some of my best friends are black"- but like pornography devoid of social merit and sin in the priesthood I KNOW racists when I see them- claims that he is a "white Hispanic"( whatever that means, presumably like Cameron Diaz or Charlie Sheen) and therefore cannot be racist are sheer baloney- would Zimmerman who before his arrest and trial seems not to have identified in any meaningful way the Hispano/Latin community (depsite his mother's purported Peruvian background) have felt free to stalk a white youth( even one wearing a hoodie(memo to Geraldo Rivera over at FOX TV- I myself own a hoodie and have seen many people of all races and both sexes wearing them- does that mean that if I lived in Florida or America in general, somebody like George Zimmerman- a wannabe cop apparently- has a god given right to blow me away on a dark night and then kill him, disregarding warnings from the police dispatcher to let the cops do their job?

You know a racist when you see one? how do you manage that, do you have some pictures of Zimmerman at a local Klan meeting that we don't have access to?

You know when someone's racist? When they accuse everyone else of racism. SMH at this Bullshit thread.

An all white jury?

What is this, To Kill a Mockingbird?

Get over yourself, man. The jury made the right choice.

Okay this is only my opinion but to me I do not know if race was a factor, Now before you label me an idiot or a racist. I think this has to do with peoples fears of the youth of the world. I mean I am white and when I was a teenager (I am 22 now) and really into the punk style and had a large 8 inch mohawk and wore my hoodie with spiked jacket cops followed me all the time. I mean I can remember several times that the cop that came to the school would follow me on my lunch break and ask me weird questions. I was apprehended a few times at local malls where they say I shoplifted only for me to have to empty my pockets and there to be nothing.

So saying this was purely racial is not really true to me it's just a lazy way of trying to convince the masses that Zimmerman was guilty before the case was even in court. He should of went to jail for manslaughter but the justice system failed, it sucks but it happens and not just to black people. Go look at the West Memphis Three as a prime example of the justice system failing.

I like how everyone glazes over the fact that trayvon was beating Zimmerman to death.

The late US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart (presumably NO realtion to either "Daily Show" host Jon or actress Kristen), once quipped that although he couldn't define pornography exactly, like sin in the priesthood,, by golly he knew it when he saw it! Ditto racism for me. I have heard that Zimmerman is reportedly demanding that black people aplogize to HIM- why I cannot imagine. My advice to him is: don't hold your(expletive deleted) breath, Georgie, old boy!

I think what bothers me the most is the assumption Zimmerman is a racist without a shred of evidence. He's considered guilty by virtue of his inability to prove a negative- he can't prove he ISN'T racist, so people assume he is.

Zimmerman has to look over his shoulder to make sure no one is stalking him with a gun.

I find it ironic.

@lady_liberty:

Well, there has been a shred. His close cousin who accused Zimmerman of molesting her for over a decade said that he and his mother were actively racist within the house when she went there. You don't havemto believe, just pointing it outnasnevidence.

Let me make sure I've got this straight.

Person A - 1) posts on facebook that he hates Mexicans, 2) is recorded by police dispatchers having referred to someone as a "coon" (this was stipulated by the attorneys)

Person B - "person A is a racist."

Your logic leads you to Person B is the actual racist.

Great work detective.

@spiderbuck: I was being sarcastic. But in all seriousness, there are a lot of people who are crying racism when they themselves are racist. It's not just whites who are racist, to think otherwise is foolish.

their mustn't been enough evidence to actually convict him as guilty.

Ya, Martin's lawyers said they couldn't use her molesting thing in the case because unfortuneately it had nothing to do with it and they also wanted to be respectful to her. But the things she said he did to her were horrible. She said it started at 6. She served as an early testimonial person when this just happened. Huffingtonpost and Washingtonpost as well as a couple others have it on their websites. She literally cried during an interview.

That's the reason I'm surprised people paint Zimmerman as a saint and Trayvon as a thug. Aside from the molesting accusation, Zimmerman was charged with assaulting a police officer as well as abusing his girlfriend to the point she filed a restraining order.

1- I don't believe you are being sarcastic at all. You claim you were being sarcastic, yet go on to defend your position. Shrug*

2 - I don't see anyone in this thread claiming only whites are racist. This thread was about one racist person, who also happened to be half latino, so that and history of racism in cultures all around the world clearly dispute any such notion. But what does this have to do with the price of tea in China? This tread is about one person, who did specific things, that lead a logical person to the conclusion that he is a racist. And apparently a child molester. But yeah you keep turning this around on the people who are pointing the dirty end of the stick at this animal, for good reason.

They only call Trayvon a thug because he was black.

Racism.

@pfcoolio14: No one's saying he's a saint. Everything prior to Martin shooting is irrelevant. It would be absurd to bring it up in case. If he was found guilty for second-degree because he assaulted his girlfriend and a police officer, then it would be a massive case of injustice.

In fact, everyone is. Everyone is saying Trayvon is a thug by pointing out marijuana and fighting at school without recognizing the fact that he's 17. That's the age for those things. Most of what I've watched say, especially Fox, say that Zimmerman was protecting his neighborhood from a thug and point out Trayvon's past without recognizing Zimmerman's. In fact on Friday, a supporter of Zimmerman was doing the exact same thing on the Piers Morgan Show. I know it's irrelevant to the case, I said that in my first post. But I also think that it's unfair that people point out Trayvon's past without talking about Zimmerman's because Zimmerman's is in fact, a lot worse.

Edited by AweSam

@pfcoolio14: Not really worse, but not really better. They both have a history of violence. That's really it. I don't believe Trayvon is a thug. He may be 17, but he's still immature. I certainly wasn't perfect at that age. Far from it, in fact. The way I see it is, it's not a thug attacking someone who's protecting his neighborhood, or someone racially profiling a black kid, it's just two people who made a mistake which turned out the worst way possible.

I find it unbelievable how so many people who should know better, just act like immature children, fighting over the simplest thing. I've seen some people on the internet who are more capable of having a mature debate about the subject than most people they bring up on CNN, or any news station.

Zimmerman was getting beat to death, or near of. But he should be charged of manslaughter, not completely not-guilty. Hell give him second-degree.
