Kansas woman fired for Facebook post criticizing US military

Did anybody hear about the story of the Kansas woman, Meagan Mays, who was fired from her job after posting a Facebook message saying that she did NOT consider the US military to be heroic(amongst other things)? Whilst her comment may very well have offended the sensibilities of some and could probably have been better phrased, I think Ms Mays is entitled to her views( after all she did NOT work for the military or presumably a defence contractor) and the "sacred cow" attitudes towards the military( be it US or to a lesser extent the UK) to be disturbing to say the least, esp on the part of the political Right. To my mind, if you want "sacred cows" of any institution( be the US or UK military, the Church of Rome, the State of Israel or the religion of Islam), then you should make plans to move to the Indian subcontinent post haste.
Yes, fighting men(and more latterly women) irrespective of branch of service or nationality ARE capable of great bravery and/or heroism, but the habit of what can only be termed uncritical veneration on the part of significant sections of (esp) the US public strikes me as a bad idea. My countryman Rudyard Kipling
(1865-1936) had a rather more realistic attitude to soldiers in a celebrated poem "It's Tommy this and Tommy that, an' chuck 'im out the brute, but 'e's the saviour of his country, when the guns begin to shoot" but reproached those"who mock the very uniforms that guard you whilst you sleep!"
After all, if service personnel are entitled to "freebies" and other perks such as discounts on purchases, being allowed to board planes ahead of their fellow citizens not in uniform, being bumped up to first class, just because they"risk their lives", then why not do the same for police officers, fire fighters or emergency services personnel- hey, they risk their lives as well!
Anybody think as I do?
Terry
