The press has been full of the "plight" of British backpacker Eleanor Hawkins who was arrested in Malaysia on obscenity charges after being photographed stripping off naked on a mountain locals claim is "sacred" to them; shortly afterwards an earthquake killed 18 people; they claim their ancestors' spirits were displeased by Ms Hawkins and her cohorts cloddish behaviour.

Ms Hawkins's "plight" disturbs me not in the least(she faces three months in prison for her antics). I for one am fed up with examples of boorish if not manifestly illegal behaviour by tourists ( American as well as British- remember l'affaire Andrew Tahmooressi in Mexico) and if the Malaysian authorities wish to sentence her to prison then so be it!

"When in Rome it pays to respect Roman mores" should be our watchword!
