Glossary

  • Abilities:  Various powers that Ontaja may unlock.  According to the law of Aquareis, each civilian Ontajin can only unlock/develop five Abilities, this is enforced through the Tattoos.
  • Aquareis:  The capital of the Ontajan race.
  • Landwalkers:  Ontaja with the Ability to dwell on dry land without ill effects.
  • Ontaja:  The name of the race.  Plural Ontaja; singular Ontajin.
  • Rite of Passage:  The rite in which Ontaja develop their first Ability, and receive restraining Tattoos.  This alters them biologically, rendering them slightly more humanlike.
  • Tattoos:  Body art with the fail-safe properties of limiting the Abilities of each Ontajin.

History

The Ontaja is a surviving remnant of a once great alien civilization, that was brought to near-extinction after their colony on Earth was abandoned.  The abandonment allowed the Earthbased Ontaja to survive in the seas, even when an underwater volcano disaster caused much knowledge about their origins to be lost.  Throughout the centuries however, they have preserved.

Biology & Powers

Adapted to withstand the pressure of the depths, the Ontaja are naturally superhumanly strong, durable, fast, have enhanced sight, and telepathy.  At birth, Ontaja tend to resemble fish with humanoid characteristics, though they become more human-like as they mature, culminating in a fully humanoid form (albeit with some marine traits) in the Rite of Passage.

Abilities

In the Rite of Passage, each Ontajin gains a power, referred to as an 'Ability'.  If they wish to, they may develop/unlock more than one Ability, although they must demonstrate a certain degree of responsibility before authorities will allow them to do so.  Civilians are not permitted to unlock any more than five Abilities each, and their restraining tattoos enfore this.
  Known Abilities:
  • Hydrokinesis:  Power to manipulate water with one's mind, for a variety of effects including moving, heating, freezing, etc.
  • Photokinesis:  Power to generate and manipulate light.  Particularly skilled Photokinetics may be able to manifest effects such as illusions, invisibility and/or force fields and energy constructs.
  • Landwalking:  Power to dwell on land without ill effects.  This also grants them the power to speak vocally, as opposed to merely through telepathy.
  • Precognition:  Power to predict likely futures, often in a self-fulfilling prophecy kind of way.  Precogs subconsciously absorb information from their surroundings (immediate and remote) and calculate probability in a way that manifests in visions.
  • Magmakinesis:  Power to draw lava from beneath the bottom of the ocean and bend it to one's will.
  • Alchemy:  Power to transmute elements.  Particularly skilled Alchemists may be able to thoroughly manipulate and rearrange matter on the molecular level.
  • Animal Mimicry:  Power to temporarily assume the characteristics or abilities of various animals, occasionally without visibly changing.
  • Teleportation:  Power to instantly travel between differently locations without occupying the space in-between.
  • Ability Negation:  Power to negate the Abilities of other Ontaja through their restraining tattoos.
Authorities of any caste (including Mundanes) have this Ability (in its standard form) in addition to the standard five.  Hence, this is the only Ability that Mundanes (if only their authorities) are allowed to unlock.
All of the Warrior caste have this Ability, although Warrior civilians have only a watered down variant where they can only disable two Abilities at once.
Only the Monarch of the Ontaja has complete immunity to Ability Negation since no one outranks them, and only he/she can negate the Abilities of exactly everyone else.  All other authorities can have their Abilities negated by those they're outranked by.

Castes

The Ontajan race is separated into a caste system, with varying ability to caste-climb.
Most castes have two main groups, the civilians and the authorities (the latter often possessing the additional power of Ability Negation).  All authorities, regardless of caste, outrank all civilians, with the exception of the Royals.
  • Mundanes:  Those who have not taken the Rite of Passage.  Civilian Mundanes have no Abilities, whereas their authorities possess Ability Negation (but not even they have taken the Rite, and may not develop more Abilities).
  • Novices:  Those who have have taken the Rite, but have only one Ability (with varying degrees of skill).
  • Apprentices:  Those have have more than one, but less than five Abilities.
  • Masters:  Those who have mastered all five standard Abilities available for them.
  • Warriors:  Those who work with law enforcement and defense.  Skill-wise, civilian Warriors can be anywhere in-between Novice and Master level, and all have the power to negate at least two Abilities of other Ontaja at once.
  • Royals:  The royal family, each Royal Ontajin being allowed to develop six Abilities, including the mandatory Ability Negation (which they are themselves immune to unless cast on them by an elder Royal).  The Monarch is completely immune to Ability Negation.
