But even from an in-universe perspective, the X-men's job is to protect and train mutants, and to fight threats to all of humanity...

The All-New Mutants

No Caption Provided

Original New Mutant Karma would lead the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning's school team, with Jubilee acting as the field leader/combat instructor. The team's primary tasks are to rescue, protect, teach, and train new mutants, in that order. The team is rounded out by graduate X-men Armor, Cipher, and Rockslide, as well as Hijack, who stays on as the team's tech-savant/babysitter. This team would share the school with the X-men, but mainly only for context.

Prof.Xi'an- One of the ideas I had for why Karma would decide to take on Xavier's former role would be because of the death of one of her students that she feels she should have been able to prevent. This would be the real impetus for her reaching out to Jubilee to form the New Mutants action squad that makes the school it's priority.

As the name implies, this series would also primarily be about newer/younger characters at the school, most of whom are not specifically training to be X-men. The initial class would be comprised of Goldballs, Oya, Eye-boy, Nature-girl, and Morph, with No-girl and Ernst as supporting characters. As the series progressed, some new characters would join while others leave. One of the first new recruits I'd like to see is Kid Colossus from the Savage Land, but for the most part I think more grounded characters with weirder powers would be more interesting.

Major Threats: Besides whatever threat is behind Kid Colossus coming to the school, I'd like to see this group come in contact with Shogo's biological father, the Future, as well as Emplate, the U-Men, Super-Human Registration Act advocates, and at least one or two new threats before coming to a story involving the Shadow King's new Hellfire Club sometime in the middle of the second year.

List items

  • Jubilee is the group's field leader/combat instructor.

  • Another former protege of Wolverine, Armor is Jubilee's 2nd in command, both in the field and in combat training.

  • An idea that interested me was the reason I imagined for having Hijack stay on at the school, which is that he feels a strange connection to Shogo and decides it's his duty to help protect him. Jubilee can't help but find this a little strange, but appreciates that he wants to help. This would lead to the two of them exploring a romantic relationship, which would be one of the main sources of drama for the book.

  • Of all of the students, Goldballs is the most dedicated to someday becoming an X-man. After having proven himself in the field, he's one of the few students who's been approved for active mission training.

  • Cipher takes a more central role as a confident to both Karma and Jubilee.

  • One kernel of an idea I had involving Cipher was that it turns out while she's been ghosting the students out of concern for their well being, Eye Boy can actually see her and uses that information to help the other kids be sneaky.

  • One of the stories I'd do with Morph would involve his powers evolving somewhat from spending a lot of time with Nature Girl (who he has a crush on) and No-Girl (who has a crush on him).

  • No-Girl herself would become a central character after a story in which the action squad finds a mindless Sabretooth clone still alive in one of Sinister's old lairs; though she's happy to once more have a body to inhabit -and a super-tough one at that- she has a lot of trouble adjusting to being a teenage girl in a grown man's body; I really think there's a lot that could be explored with that idea.
