@timandm: That's true for all heroes. Thor, Spider-man, Wolverine etc. There is other stuff to make us read, the action, character drama, etc.

He just isn't for some people. It's not because they are stupid or anything like that. I am not a fan of him at all for some reason I find female characters a lot more interesting than males and to be honest men get to much hype therefore loose my interest because then you see a female taking charge and being the bad ass which is awesome. Superman just isn't for everyone. I like wonder woman so much more than him.

Superman as a character lacks enough obstacles to makes him a hero. He also the most inconsistent hero in regards to strength because writers try to push his powers to the limit without proper knowledge of physics. Suppression of dis-belief can only be pushed so far. The act of superman pushing a planet says it all. Insane feats do put the reader in awe of interest, but only if it is done once in a while and in moderation with consideration of consistency. Superman committing action A should not fail at doing action B. However if Superman is able to do anything what is the point of reading the comic since it's only one page long.

Yep, but at the same time not make him a punching bag like he has been for the last 10 years or so.

Writers fail to make Superman live up to his legend/myth in stories. DC 1 Million did a good job of almost doing Superman justice that way, instead of making Superman deal with petty things like muggers and low level villains or Luthor. Superman needs to be GALACTIC and adventurous. The tension should come from questioning his morality, being wordshipped, solving a space mystery or something and not so much whose he's battling. When he does have to pluck someone there should be no question who wins. He's like a big brother that can beat up everyone!

Instead he's written to play Watson to Batman's Sherlock and then to further insult matters, lose to Batman in a fight.

If I didn't read Superman, I'd have no respect for him either.

I don't hate Superman (hating a fictional character is pretty pathetic tbh) but I don't really find him all that interesting either. The only time I ever found him interesting was in Superman: TAS, other than that I've always kinda thought he was boring. I've always thought minus the powers he just doesn't have much else going for him, maybe others think he does and that's fine but I just don't.

Like anything in life the ones who get the love conversly also get the most hate....you see it in sports(Yankees) all the time. Most of the peope who start hating him do so because everyone else is loving them and the rebel against that notion.

I am personally a huge Supes fan, but I have struggled through some really bad writing, some really bad stories, and now a too early to tell, but so far I am not really into it reboot.....

I think part of it has to do with the times. Someone like Superman, who was the quintessential hero in the golden age, isn't as easy for people today to get behind as the darker, perhaps more rebellious characters that are more often thrown out.

For me, personally, I just think he is too much of a joke these days. Hear me out - Superman and Batman were created many decades ago, of course, and they both back then were allowed to look ridiculous in underpants. As time goes on and people's (or cultures) ideals and views change, the heroes have to change in a cosmetic way as well. Batman changed - he became the Dark Knight. He inspires fear upon those who prey on the fearful. Even Robin changed - he went from being "Holy rusted metal, Batman" to being murdered horrifically by the Joker.

Superman, on the other hand, hasn't lost the red tights. He still looks like a joke. Sure, the ideals he stands for will live on through the test of time, but you have to understand - he's an alien. He's an alien fighting for a planet that is not his own. How can you relate to someone like that? Sure, you can look up to them, but relate to them? That's why he differs from someone such as, say, Captain America. Steve was a skinny kid who had circumstances beyond his control restrict his life. He denied his circumstances and went on to live out his dream of serving his country.

That's just my opinion, and before you reply, just remember that it is what I believe and that I'm not intending to devalue Superman as a character.

It's not that I don't like Superman( I find him to be a very interesting character and American icon)it's just that there are more powerful/interesting characters out there I don't like the fact that just because Superman has existed for 70 years that must mean he is a unbeatable god(I have heard people say he can beat Galactus).

There is a couple reasons why superman is disliked

1. people find his comics and stories some wat boring "cause he is always going to win, he is over powered, BLAH BLAH"

2. he is too strong cant be beat has too many powerful incarnations and peaks "supes one million, sa supes, tr supes, so on so forth"

3.those are some reasons but from wat i see in many websites and from some of my own friends is that they all have a set image of superman from the cartoons, movies, games and not from comics, an image that he is wack, boring, weak, and can never stand up to the likes of goku, vegeta, sephiroth, hulk, thor, so once you prove that he is not wack but interesting, not weak but very powerful and has many powerful enemies who are at times more powerful than him(showing he can be beat). instead of admitting that he does have good stories, has interesting points, and has a way to showcase his powers in an awesome way, they turn into superman haters and lead up to bashing the guy with new excuses and will find any reason to hate the guy. I know this sounds like a weird reason to dislike a character but it all comes down to ignorance. Every friend that i have had hate supes has changed theyre mind after reading a couple supes comics, so it seems for the most part ppl who hate supes simply dont know him from the comics a wont give him a chance cuz in theyre mind goku, hulk, sentry, who ever will never lose or will always be better than supes. This creates hero haters, ppl should come into comics with open minds and read from a variaty of heros especially if ur on a website like this where vast hero knowledge is demanded in order to debate without sounding like a fan boy, troll. Supes is and always will be my favorite character because his stories are amazing(most), he has amazing powers but very powerful enemies that make those powers needed, and the main reason he is my favorite is that he is the father of all heroes he set the standards and principles that every hero originated from. this is all my opinion but there you have it

I think it comes more from how boring he is as Clark Kent and when he is Superman he is always questioning his humanity and connection to humanity. HOnestly, he has had some very bad writing. Brian Azzarello was able to bring me in with his For Tomorrow arc that I thought humanized Superman without making him do something useless like walk across America moping.

Batman has a similar problem. As Bruce Wayne he is uninteresting. It makes sense to be that way when he is in public, but the reader is treated to boredom on a grand scale.

This happens with other characters too. Wolverine was boring for years before his origin finally came out. Spider-Man was so boring that he got out shined by his Ultimate counterpart.

Superman, under Grant Morrison, is cool again. He is cool, because his character is interesting. He is more human in his actions and demeanor than he has been in a while. I am a strong proponent of old characters dying off or being retired so that something new and fresh can be brought in, like Miles Morales (UCSPM) or Dick Grayson. It is a good move for the characters, the story and the readers.

Unfortunately, with someone like Superman you can't really replace him too easily or have him die as a permanent option. This isn't an impossible situation, it just requires dedicated story direction and intense character development with the supporting cast.

Superman has been around for over 60 years. It is easy to take the character for granted and not give the proper edge to writing him that is required. I'm glad he has Grant Morrison on as his writer again. He'll finally be given some thought and consideration beyond the quickie story arc.

i honestly think it falls into two categories

1. some people just don't find him interesting which is understandable, he's not for everyone

2. People who don't actually READ Superman comics like to hate him because he's popular

I think it’s because so much cannon Superman was created in a much more fantastical world than the one people can relate to. He feels more fantastical because of his sheer raw ability, but he is very much the first superhuman and should be respected as such!

@nrgb2814: I could throw up with all the "Why do people hate Superman so much?", threads that I see. How many people even really noticed Aquaman until this New 52. Before that I didn't see any, "Why do people hate Aquaman so much?" Threads.

1. He doesn't talk to fish (He pushes them telepathically to do what He wants).

2. He's pretty tough (Taking a bullet to his head and it only scratching him).

I'm surprised at the Hulk/Thor comparisons. Quite frankly, their comics/movies don't do so hot either. It's just that Big blue is the front runner icon. If either Thor or Hulk was, they'd be lambasted too. It's less about anti-supes but more anti PIS sentiment. Superman is exactly like Barbie. "New improved Superman, now with time travel powers!".

I don't think how powerful Superman is should matter too much. First of all, he's called Superman. He's supposed to be really powerful. It's very hypocritical of people to say that he's overpowered when he's supposed to be overpowered and then go and say that Hulk and Thor could beat Superman while claiming that they are not overpowered. Anyway, I still do feel that his villains should be strong enough to give him a lot of trouble though. Like Mongul should be written as he was in the Pre-Crisis days. PC Superman was ridiculously powerful, and yet PC Mongul was still stronger and the first time Superman ever beat him, he passed out after doing so. I think Lex Luthor and other powerless enemies can have very advanced tech from others such as Brainiac and Apokolips which is capable of hurting him, instead of just having to use kryptonite or red sun energy.

Darkseid was never intended to be on the same power level as Superman. He's a New God and was actually supposed to be (and was inceptualized to be) far-ish above Superman-level. Jeph Loeb did what he does best and f*cked up the origin and characterization, as well as power level, which is his trademark when he takes over writing a character. And ever since then, everybody's followed suit and brought Darkseid down to a comparable level to Superman, which he was never intended to be at.

Superman is one of the best characters ever created. Now let's move on to hating characters that actually deserve it, like Namor, or Ben Reilly.

Flash is the fastest HUMAN on the planet. The keyword is HUMAN.

Superman is not Human, he's Kryptonian. So even if he's faster than Flash, it doesn't matter. Flash would still be the fastest HUMAN.

He's not faster than Flash, by a long shot, so the point is moot anyway.

 Not me, i love supes
As for the overpowered thing, i do think superman is subject to double standards

-Batman kills gods, yet he is not overpowered
-Flash outran death and changed reality, yet most don't say he's overpowered
-Scarlet Witch eradicated a species and changed reality with three words, nope she's cool
-Hulk can now survive in space, beats gods, teams of heroes, Dr. Strange IN HIS OWN DIMENSION, Black Bolt, Professor x (the world's strongest telepath) as well as separate the Earth with a footstep, but nope, he's not overpowered
-Luke Cage casually lifts a semi truck with one arm, but he's good
-Tony Stark is a walking deus ex machina and has a suit of armor for EVERY occassion, but he's ok

yet people constantly hate on Superman for being powerful, i just don't get it

Im not accusing you of having double standards. Im just pointing them out.
And with Flash, I was just using him to show you that there are characters who are much much more ridiculous than Superman. And Thor does have more powers than Super Strength and Lightning.
Also Flash stomps Superman, Thor pretty much equals him, and MM beats him.
....Sorry if it sounds like im attacking you or something. Im really not.
