Well, I don't hate Superman... I do, however, find him less interesting than super heroes who are much less powerful than him. For a character to interesting, or at least their adventures to be interesting, they have to be challenged and there HAS to be the possibility of failure.

Try to imagine this: A new heavy weight boxer comes along and is amazing beyond amazing. He's faster, stronger, and more skilled than any boxer in history.

  • He moves so fast that he is almost never hit
  • He's so sturdy that even when he is hit, he almost never suffers damage.
  • He's so healthy that even when he suffers damage, he heals within seconds.
  • He hits ten times harder than any boxer in history
  • He has perfect hand - eye coordination, perfect balance, and reflexes that border on precognizance.

So, this new young fighter comes along and wins his first fight by a knock out in less than one minute.

His second fight he wins by a knockout in less than half a minute.

His third fight doesn't even last 15 seconds...

Before long he's won a hundred fights most ending in less than 10 seconds....

Now, how many tickets are being sold to these world championship fights? Today, people will pay HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS just to watch a championship fight on Pay Per View... But how many would pay to see a fight with this amazing fighter? Answer- virtually none... How many will pay for a ringside seat? How many want to buy tickets, pay for parking, take a night away from other things to go watch this AMAZING boxer? Answer - almost none... And it is not because he's not amazing; he obviously is... It's not because they doubt their guy will win; he obviously will. So, why aren't people paying to see this guy fight? Why bother? He's GOING to win.... There is absolutely no doubt, no challenge, no mystery... Nada...

Now, I know this example is a bit exaggerated, but the point is, UBER powerful heroes can easily lose the interest of the readers...

Let's try another imaginary scenario... This one is going to be a little difficult, but imagine that Chuck Norris is a GREAT actor... Stop laughing... Now concentrate. Try to imagine that. Also, try to imagine that someone writes a few martial arts action movies for him to star in and the films are made... Now, answer the following questions:

  1. Will Chuck lose ANY of the fights he is in during the movie? Answer - No. Chuck NEVER loses fights in movies he is the star of... He lost in one movie, but it was a Bruce Lee movie and Bruce Lee was the one who beat him...
  2. Will Chuck defeat the villain? Answer - OF COURSE. DUH...
  3. Will Chuck get killed in the film? Answer - What a STUPID QUESTION! Chuck doesn't even slow down when he's shot.

You can substitute "Steven Segal" for "Chuck Norris" and the example still works...

There's no suspense in a Chuck Norris or Steven Segal film... If you watch them, you watch them for the action only. You KNOW the ending before the movie even begins.

Most of the time, Super Man simply cannot lose. He can't... He won't. DC had to invent Doomsday and Darkseid before Superman was in any real danger... (Kryptonite aside)

Super Man is stronger than the Hulk, Faster than the Flash, as smart as Reed Richards, and indestructible... Laser vision, x-ray vision, heat vision, freeze breath, can SEE DNA, and on and on and on....

How can he lose? Most of the time, he can't.

on point #1: yes he can be beat, but we know that no matter who the hero is, they usually make a big triumphant comeback. just like his death story where he was beat by doomsday.

on point #2: every comic character can seem to get stale over time, and sales show that. supe is no differnent. his comic has had its fair share of bad stories and sale drops just like everyone elses.

@Timandm
i really like that example. while yes at first you want to see the the new amazing fighter in the beginning, eventually people will catch on to the fact that it might just be a waste of money to buy a fight you know he will win

on him being an american classis: now i may not have been reading comics as long as some people here, but it doesnt take a genius to know and respect everything supe comics have brought to the comicbook industry. its just that we're not in the golden age anymore (sadly), and we have so many different characters that can seem more interseting to certain people than supe. and writers cant force people to like someone.

so i dont think it so much that people are down on him, its that they arent interested in him. personally i think there are some supe stories that are simply amazing, and some that just seem to fail, and its just not my type of comic. and its not like everyone hates him, he still prob one of the top 5 in popularity. heck i wish some of my fav characters were that big lol. i know it prob to late to make a long story short lol, but what im tryin to get at here is that everyone has an opinion. and hey im may not be a big fan, but im glad to see that his and everyones elses comics are sellin out in this reboot, so whether you like him and this reboot or not, just be happy the comic industry in general is gettin some well deserved attention.

No question. They raced. Flash is faster. He also has faster reflexes/turns faster/etc, since he's going at a normal speed to himself. Captain Marvel is another question....

People don't like Superman for the same reason they don't like Tom Brady, Tim Tebow, or anyone else that is followed religiously because they are perceived as being perfect beyond belief.

That analogy doesn't exactly work because Michael Jordon not only COULD Lose, he often did. Well, the Chicago Bulls did. There was ALWAYS the chance that the Bulls would lose... With Superman it simply doesn't happen that often, and the writers had to create special circumstances so that it would happen. With Batman or Spider-Man there's always the chance they could lose...

But I want to clear something. I'm not saying I don't like Superman as a character, I'm just saying he's not as interesting since I know he's absolutely going to win nearly every single time....

Every single day I hear people say they hate superman because he's boring and can't be beat...

What I think they should know:

1.) He can be beat (Kryptonite, Red sunlight, magic)

There's obviously more than three things which can hurt Superman, but that's besides the point. It is sort of lame that writers continuously dip into the same silly list of weaknesses every time they want to have Superman actually fall into a state of danger. Reading about characters who are more vulnerable is simply more exciting. Superman is a great character to have around, and is in many ways necessary, but that doesn't make him a particularly interesting character to read.

The truth is that people who often hate Superman are just basing it off of cartoons and movies. They've rarely ever read a Superman comic. That being said, the character doesn't interest them enough to get them to actually read one, so it's sort of understandable. I've never read more than two Spawn books in my life, but that doesn't mean that I can say that he's awful in every conceivable way.

It all comes down to personal taste, but I think a lot of people don't like him because it's cool or socially acceptable to say you don't like Superman.

I said Superman never loses (except rarely) whereas Batman not only CAN lose, but on occasion DOES lose... So, there is a huge difference... Does it make sense that Batman, a man with NO superhuman powers, can kick the snot out of Darkseid? No...

So.. in my post where I said, " Well, I don't hate Superman... I do, however" ( I copy and pasted that) you somehow get "I hate Superman" from that?

Honestly? I say the words "I don't hate Superman" and you hear or see, "I hate Superman."

@Timandm: k fine but if ur argument is that Superman will undoubtedly win, well then thats the case for all superheroes if they are super powered or not n wat im sayin is that if superman seems less interesting cuz he lacks a challenge then writers shld come up with means and characters who present a challenge and then show how SUPERman over comes that, then no one wld find it less interesting, thing is u cant have a superheroes lose unless its part of a story arc but they eventually beat the bad guys in the end theres never a story where the hero has absolutely lost like in HUSH bats cracked his skull but still beat every other villain in that story even when up against doomsday supes died after killing doomsday so he technically won .i think u mean getting hurt.Supes is less likely to get hurt than most other heroes that makes him less intersting......And

its like Moewshi said, just cause hes only read a couple spawn books doesnt meen he hates him. same with supe, its not that everyone hates him (even tho i will admit there are some who do), its just that some dont find him as interesting as other characters. so just like me and others have already stated, it comes down to your own personal taste. so i do not believe it right for anybody who does not read the supe comics to automaticly be put in the "superman hate" group when they just arent interested.

I hate him, because everyone is always telling me to love him. That he is the best. The most inspirational and glorious. That I have to like him more than everyone else. That I have to sell my children to give money to a foundation to make a statue of him. Its like, where is the thread asking why people are down on Marrow, or Mogo or Linka, or etc etc

Actually I like him though. lol

I believe the first time I read a Superman comic book was in the early 70s....

Can you imagine how many retcons and changes have been done since then? So, it's difficult to keep up with exactly what Superman can and cannot do through the years... There have actually been races between the two.... There was a time in which Superman could vibrate his molecules fast enough to phase through solid matter. There was a time he could fly faster than light... It's VERY hard to know what the old boy can do at the moment...

Okay, so now, at this moment in time, Superman is NOT faster than The Flash... Thank God... So, he's only AS FAST as The Flash? Or, maybe he's a LITTLE slower?

@UltimateSMfan:k fine but if ur argument is that Superman will undoubtedly win well then thats the case for all superheroes

True... But it's a question of degree. Batman, Spiderman, Daredevil, ... they all seem to always win EVENTUALLY... But they do suffer some losses... and to be fair Superman doesn't ALWAYS win but almost always... Spiderman's fiance died at the end of his web... He tried to save her but ended up snapping her neck... How gruesome is that? Batman wasn't quick enough to save Jason (I THINK it was jason) from being bludgeoned to death by the Joker... Daredevil was possessed by a demon and ended up committing crimes and nearly destroying his life.

Recently Daredevil took on a bunch of Nazis in giant walking/shooting robots and he beat them. It was GREAT! But if Superman were to take on those Nazis in robots well... He's going to win. Easily... He'll absolutely trash them at super speed. Maybe even throw them all into the sun... Well, he could throw the robots without the people inside them, into the sun... But it would be VERY easy for him.. So, while I enjoyed reading about Daredevil trashing Nazis in robots, it simply wouldn't be as interesting if it were Superman... Now, I AM trying to give the new Superman a try... I really am... But there needs to be more of a challenge...

And what you said about the writers needing to create challenges for him. that's absolutely true... I think that's what Doomsday and Darkseid are all about... But do you see how powerful they had to make the villain just so Superman could lose? I LIKE the idea of this incredibly powerful super hero... but tone it down some... that's all..

Why are you making such an unwarranted extrapolation? I say limits and you say, "Beat up by a train?" BTW, I wouldn't characterize it that way. SUPER MAN survives, the train wasn't so lucky. Technically, if you want to call that a fight, Superman WON that fight.

If, for you, Superman having limits means he gets beat up every issue, then what YOU believe are limits and what I believe are limits are very different things...

Spider-Man has limits. Spider-Man does not get beat up every issue.

Daredevil has limits. Daredevil does not get beat up every issue.

Even the freaking Hulk has limits... The Hulk does not get beat up every issue...

However, if what you want is a character who absolutely never loses a fight, and never suffers and injury, and is practically stronger, faster, smarter, and more powerful than EVERYONE else in the universe, perhaps you should consider reading the Bible just for fun...

@Timandm: That was just an example....-___- What limits would YOU put on Superman?
