My solution to the "Woman problem" at Marvel!

It is perceived that Marvel has a problem with female readers because they only have one title that features a female protagonist in the title role. This is troubling for me particularly because I've always thought of the avengers titles as female led books. But, in order to remedy this I've come up with a solution! Bring back old concepts with female centric themes.

1. Marvel Team up

A Marvel Team up book would be a great addition to the Marvel Universe. The catch is, have Spider-Woman lead the book. Jessica is a good character, just not a great character. However, if you have her showcase the diversity of the Universe I think the book can work. She could essentially play the "straight man" to the different characters that guest star. With the focus not really being on Jessica and really on the guest star we get a compromise that can both showcase a revolving door of concepts and add some depth to an underused character at the same time.

2.Revolving minis

One of the things that really upsets me is the number of pointless titles that get published every month. For instance, Avengers Assemble. The biggest waste of paper and Bendis since the last. If I were EIC this wouldn't see the light of day. Instead, we should have mini-series for lesser known characters and creators. Black Widow, She-Hulk and Shanna have all had their own books. None have been prosperous enough to warrant a long running ongoing. But, if we had a mini series for one out of the three every month, then maybe one would catch on enough to warrant an ongoing. Four issues apiece, for three characters, that's almost a monthly is you follow all three. Annnnd, if you have some newcomer creators, you can use it as a farm system and maybe find some hidden talent that's waiting to become major.

3. Marvel Graphic Novel

A great concept that is definitely worthy of a return. You really don't have to focus on female characters with this concept. This would work itself out that eventually stories featuring female leads would get published and in graphic novel format to boot. The old MGN had it's fair share of female leads without trying and I suspect that the same would be true for a relaunch. With the climate of today's market and Trade paperbacks then MGN format monthly or even bi-monthly could be prosperous.

The problem with corporate business is that unless you are making hand over fist and have the extra revenue in profits to burn, the shareholders may be putting pressure on the company president or Editor In Chief. What if the numbers came back that mini-series of already existing monthly books significantly increased revenue by 200% for the quarter. The shareholders will want more of that.

I'm not a numbers guy but I've been around to know how business at the upper levels operate. What it comes down to is the company president or chief executive officer NEED TO have the moxie to say "NO" and present an alternative plan and how that plan will ultimately grow the company. BUT, if the company doesn't meet the plan and grow, that executive who presented the idea will probably be fired from his position...so a champion of the fans (and the property) will be gone.

I have to Agree deeply. The Lady Liberators was an interesting idea, and we saw that She-Hulk kinda revitalized that with well...basicly every popular female marvel woman. So why not use a Liberators title where its a non-static team membership maybe one or regulars.

Those books would not sell and would eventually be cancelled.

@x_29: Your missing the point entirely. The whole reason for my blog and the main point of the blog is to get exposure to the characters. That's the whole reason I suggested more anthology series than monthly series. The point isn't to sell like The Avengers, but rather to sell at least as well as the random limited series they publish each month to get the characters out there. I'm sure they can pull in the numbers that A-Babies vs X-Babies did. With that said, I'm working with the Deadpool theory. Deadpool's first and second limited series' didn't light the world on fire, but they did give more exposure to a character that was building a nice fan base. His first monthly sold poorly and was cancelled twice before Joe Kelly quit the title. But, he grew a following. The point is; if you give some creators a chance to try some things with some characters then maybe they can build a following that warrants a monthly. The same thing happened with Rocket Raccoon and Groot. They were D-List characters before DnA got a hold on them in GotG and they grew a following. GotG never sold well, but the characters grew popular enough to warrant a movie. Maybe the same could happen to some of the characters that I mentioned. You never know until you try it.
