Daken, Dearly Departed

It would seem with the conclusion of Daken's ongoing that he has now passed on. Not sure bout y'all but I for one am rather upset and on many levels. First off how the series was ended was an absolute rushed disgrace. There was no explanation/resolution as to how Wolverine and Reed Richards recovered from the Heat Daken injected them with, which I thought was how he planned to take the cure. Whether or not they left this open ended for a possible return we don't know but for now it seems he's dead.

I'm also kind of disappointed as to how it seems Marvel just didn't know what to do with him. Are we to believe the best we can do with a majority of the dark twisted son of Wolverine's own series is have him run around all crazed out on drugs? Of course Daken had his run in with X-23 throughout his series but we all knew that story was only a matter of time. I guess we'll never see Daken settle up with Winter Soldier or meet Sabretooth. Seems like a shame to me. What do you think? Better off without him? Think he'll come back?

I'm so disappointed............i know a lot of people didn't really like his various adventures but i was a fan of the character......he's one of the few that i kinda followed from the start (roughly when i was full-time getting into comics)..so naturally i took a liking to the character. it's so disappointing that he didn't get to do so many things and marvel seem to have made the decision to just abandon him almost on a sudden change of heart. and worst of all we never even got a Daken/Winter Soldier showdown. BAH.

but Daken is in the current Deadpool arc...but idk if it takes place before or after this, presumably before.

I haven't read the book to be honest... :/

@X35: I hear you, I kinda jumped into 616 Marvel when I saw these "Dark Avengers". I loved his intensity and arrogance and the fact that he used his sexuality/bi-sexuality as a weapon as much as his claws. How could it be that Marvel can't figure out what to do with the ball of messed up daddy issues/claws that is Wolverine's son and his soul searching clone daughter

As far as Wolverine #304 and Deadpool go I' sure they're before the fact...le sigh

@Nefilim927: How did he die exactly? Like was it a clear-cut "yep, Daken is dead" death or an ambiguous "is he or isn't he" scenario?

(some Daken fan I am, i managed to not get a single issue since it was announced it was "cancelled" :S)

@X35: The scene itself is rather ambiguous though his speech sounds rather final. I wish I could recommend reading it, I guess as a Daken fan for closure you should, but...meh

I was a fan of Daken, up until Williams took over as writer, at which point, the story was arduously prolonged with no clear direction as to where Daken was heading, in terms of character development. There were a few questions that I would have liked to have been answered:

  1. Why wasn't he able to grow back his third claw?
  2. How was he going to take revenge on the Winter Soldier, when the public have presumed that he died during Fear Itself?
  3. Why has he never met Sabretooth?
  4. Will Romulus return?

@royale_with_cheese:

I'm with you on 2 & 3 and as far as #1 he actually does have his 3rd claw back he just doesn't use it as much and they never explained how he was able to grow it back.

Just stupid.

How someone who has been around since the 1940's and raised by a maniacal god-thinking psychopath (and who lived and breathed self preservation) can get addicted to a anti healing drug is beyond me. Then he dies? Like that?!

-_-

I didn't like the direction his book had been going near the end -- but this is just pathetic writing and poor editorial decisions. Better off having him move back into the shadows and disappear than ending on the note that he did. What a waste.

Maybe this is to give room for Erista to finally make an appearance.

ugh. it's just really annoying and poor decision to kill off a character because his book flopped.

like imagine if they'd killed the hulk off when his title tanked after the first 6 issues in the 60s? or how about the x-men after 60 issues??

there was plenty of things that could be done with daken. there's the thunderbolts or x-force, or just reoccurring villain. but, no, apparently a death was the best choice of idea. ¬_¬

@god_spawn: Well yea obviously but it was never mentioned. We just went from the end of Reckoning where he's sitting with his arms all busted to him poppin them out again.

Awful just Awful what they did to a potentially good character. I was a Daken Fan from the moment he turned up, yeah there were ton's of questions but his fighting skills were so impressive to me with his first appearance that I didn't care I just wanted to see more of him. There was so much room to flesh his character out but Marvel was too busy creating more Phoenix and Cyclops Vs everybody story arcs, sad thing is Daken was one of the few characters that could take marvel out of this repetitive loop. There were many others as well, it just seems like Marvel has to keep us occupied with Avengers, Cyclops, Wolverine, Thor, Iron Man and the very out dated Captain America! That's why I have lost all faith in Marvel and I will happily return to DC, Superman, Batman and Slade forever!

@royale_with_cheese: I don't have much bad to say about Williams writing I loved the Taskmaster arc but he definatly could have done better I really felt like the last story arcs were really rushed.

@Postacrat:Me too I've been getting more Dc books than Marvel lately cause I've been noticing that repetitive loop and I've been a Marvel head for years. I hope they bring Daken back in time.

They didn't show his death on panel and he has faked his death before. He pulled off another big fake out at the same time too so I really doubt he's dead. Unfortunately he is probably going to be in comic book limbo for a while.

Can we try and keep spoilers out of freaking titles???

I rather doubt he's actually dead, so it's not nearly as great a problem.

@Mercy_: My apologies

@Nefilim927: My apologies for possibly coming off a bit harsh, it's just my biggest pet peeve in comic fandom.

Yeah, I was REALLY disappointed when I found out they ended Daken. I fell in love with him from the beginning (curse those pheromones! lol). They were going all over the place with Daken and had no clear direction of where to go with him it seems. Daken was so insidious and would do nearly anything to get what he wanted (he's so cunning), I just love his cockiness and arrogance when he fights. Absolutely loved his quarrel with Skaar, especially the mind games he played with him. But the way he was able to sedate Skaar blew my mind...lol...enough of my fangasm, I honestly loved Daken. But Marvel, Y U NO do Daken/Winter Soldier fight?
